I've only recently discovered Brandi Carlile and as a fan of Joni, I wish Brandi would record a studio version of that song so that we could listen to it with good audio and without the sounds from the audience. Joni Mitchell is a monument and it's really hard to find good covers of her song, but Brandi crushed it. She brings something new to the song and makes it her own and i can't get enough of her voice.
Why are you trying so hard to find a cover of this song? Why don't you buy Joni's damn album and hear what the song is supposed to sound like. Instead of all of the sub standard people imitating Joni? Once again as I've said... it's not how long you can hold a note or how loudly.... without the soul of the song you ain't got nothing but a string of words.....Is there any song of Ms Mitchell's that Brandi hasn't done a cover of? She should sing her own damn music, I think it's time to get off Joni's back Brandi, I think you've gotten all the milage riding on the back of that horse as you should. Go try being original. How conceited of Brandi to attempt to do Joni's MASTERPIECE "BLUE"! What nerve. Brandi..you will never be Joni Mitchell....no matter how many covers of her songs, or how much money you make off of her....wow...no shame at all. And by the way.... I've heard A Case of You so many times for so many years...I know the history behind the song...which matters...and no...Brandi didn't crush it. Go listen to the original, then come back and tell me that.
@@katelord6106 I have listened to most of Joni's songs, including A Case of You, and she is an incredible artist. For the record, I also own three of her albums. You know what's great with music? It's meant to be shared, and revisited, and reinterpreted. I know what the song is about, thank you very much. I like Brandi's version, just like I like Joni's. Both are different but beautiful in their own way. You should open up instead of criticizing random stranger's music tastes and assuming things about them when you don't know. By the way, Brandi also writes her own songs. Covering another artist's music is just a show of respect and appreciation. I think you're the one that's conceited here. Have a nice day.
@@MagicalMusic15 completely agree. I love discovering Joni covers by young talented artists making her songs their own. It proves Joni’s lyrics are timeless. Brandi brings her own quality and vocal clarity this song and I can’t get enough.
Blue changed my life in 1972...I was hooked on Joni from the first note, the first word. She always wrote the words I could not speak at times in my life when I needed to hear them.
an acquaintance of mine's (who taught guitar and sings in various bands) wife recommended Blue to me. it was so transcendent listening to Joni. i wasn't born yet. i needed 2 more years to be more than a zygote. i digress. Joni is like the ultimate female songwriter who plays folk music so effortlessly.
This is one of those few performances that has me in tears just from its sheer beauty and emotion. Can’t believe I’ve been without Brandi Carlile for my entire life. So thankful I’ve found her
In the mid '80s, I boarded a bus in the southern part of Seattle. The bus was empty and the bus driver said "You have your choice of seats", and I sang out "If you want me I'll be in the bar..." She and I stared at each other for a moment then cracked up laughing. How I miss the universal appreciation J.M. used to enjoy.
She’s probably the best live performers I’ve ever seen. She’ll bring you to tears. I always say she’s like Karen Carpenter and Roy Orbison wrapped into one
Brandi has the voice, the heart and the soul to make me cry. There are few that have the ability to tell you a story and make you believe it. She paints a picture with her lyrics and the voice amplifies those words. Beyond that she has a sublime sense of humor and wit. What a total package!
Prince does a superb (partial) version of “A Case of You” and his piano playing is heavenly. It’s on YT. He was a HUGE Joni fan and knew her. She was one of the first concerts he ever went to as a young man and she actually said she remembers him sitting in the front row listening so carefully to her every word/note. She was a great influence on his gigantic catalog of songs. Probably would’ve been at the 75th Birthday Party for her but, sadly, he left us too soon. 💜
Perfection. There is no one, IMO, that interprets a lyric like Brandi. She is simply getting better with age. What a performance. Thanks for giving this to us.
A friend of mine and fellow Brandi fan literally said the same thing....she's just getting better and better. I've had the privilege of hearing her perform this live twice in the last month....brings out all the feels.
This is one of the most incredibly passionate (and perfect) vocal performances I have ever seen. I've loved you for a long time, Brandi, and you just totally reached a whole other level of "wow".
Few lack the respect to think they are talented enough to cover not one, two...four.. I've lost count of how many songs Brandi thinks she's talented enough to sing...Most artist have the good sense to leave a Joni Mitchell song alone....
@@katelord6106 Art is subjective so some will like Brandi’s homage to Joni and some will not. I respect your perspective. I also respect Brandi for supporting Joni so wonderfully at the Newport Folk Festival. Without Brand’s encouragement we might never have heard Joni sing in concert again.
@@marionbarker8547 Finally someone who can respond without being belligerent. You might be right. I personally found it difficult enough to watch Joni struggling thru some songs, I just wish Brandi hadn't hovered over her. I felt she barely let Joni breathe. It would have been great to let Joni hold her own on the stage. She almost got that with Summertime...right up until the end. And see, it's my belief that even if Joni had stumbled, she's in a venue surrounded by people who love her, I don't believe anyone would have been judgemental. Even a caring parent can hover over a child until they suffocate the child. And I was using sarcasm saying who is Brandi...I live in Seattle. I've known who she is for a long time. I still find, no matter how good she may be, you don't tell Van Gogh that you love Starry Night so much you think you'll paint an exact replica...No, that would be disrespectful of the artist. I don't care how good Brandi thinks she is, she has some nerve to duplicate Joni Mitchell's Masterpiece, "Blue". A 50 year old gem, treasure that Ms Carlisles had the nerve to cover the entire thing! That's just, in my opinion, wrong....then have it professionally recorded and then making money off of it. I don't see that as a show of respect. There's only one Starry Night...there is only one Blue album....and that belongs to Joni. I'd think if others were Joni fans first, they wouldn't be so defensive of Brandi. The show was to spotlight Joni, not Brandi. Anyway, that's my opinion.
@@marionbarker8547 Thank you. Yes, I agree with you....but, yes I have a couple buts... it's one thing to respect another artist's work. It's quite another to become obsessed with their work. Brandi doesn't have any boundaries when it comes to Joni's music, work. Yes, it greatly upsets me that she would think to do a "cover" of Joni's MASTERPIECE, Blue. That's not respecting the work. That album was Joni's induction into the Hall of Fame back in 1999, when Joni also won another Grammy. That album has stood it's ground, like sacred stuff for 50 years! And no other artists would have dreamed to touch it. Along comes Brandi and she has the nerve to think she's good enough to redo the whole damn thing. No. I think the problem here is the way I feel about this is the opposite of most here. It appears that I'm addressing Brandi fans first, then Joni fans. I don't like that all the attention of the songs, even the reviews of Newport put Brandi first, or didn't mention Joni at all. I can give you the headlines from 4 publications. Just seems to me Ms Carlisles had been getting a whole lot of attention and yes money off of someone else's work. I first heard Brandi didn't want or allow cell phones during the Blue concert. I thought maybe she's not trying to make $$$. Sadly not true. She did release an album. So yes, that might be called paying "homage", beginning to dislike that word, but it's also called making money. People can justify it all they want, but it comes down to smart marketing on behalf of Brandi's people. And I'd loved, just once to have seen Joni on stage without Brandi glued to her side. Get out of the frame for one picture Brandi, dang. Boundaries.
Brandi has a way of completely overwhelming me that I find it hard to break away, I become hypnotized by her voice. Her talent is beyond human. Thank you for gifting us.
Great rendition, but yes Brandi missed out on bonus points for neither mentioning the Canadian factor, nor -more importantly- that Case of You is actually about Cohen.
Wow... impressive.. she has the perfect tambour and vibrato for this jewel of a song!!! The story was sooooo very charming .. and the performance was honey to my ears!!! Love Brandi!!!!!
I’d be really impressed if in addition to singing the entire Blue album you also learned to play all of those songs using Joni’s unique tunings. Joni Mitchell is one of the greatest singer/songwriter musicians of all time and the pride of Saskatoon.
Brandi Carlile is a new gift to us all... really powerful performance she gave at Grammys 2019. Great singer and writer... love her natural talk to the audience. And now she's doing a song by one my favorite poet/musician artists of all time: Joni Mitchell! What a gift.
It’s a damn good world with music. Honor all who give us the gift of music, sweet souls...... timeless and forever, these songs echo forever and ever and ever.
I hope they recorded that Blue concert by Brandi because I'd buy it right now. I bought Joni's album back in '72, still have it, upgraded to CD when it came out, it was the first CD I ever bought. I'd love to hear Brandi's version of the whole album, love her interpretation of this song and the ones from the Joni 75 album.
There was something so deep about this. Covering Joni can be dangerous but when you do it because it moves you as much as it seems to Brandi, it must be done. Joni's music is timeless and very critical to the art of making music. Her songs are not easy to sing. Joni made it sound easy.
One of the the most beautiful love songs ever written by a genius who reguards herself as a painter first, a poet second and a musician third. Joni is the greatest female artist and the greatest singer songwriter of all time... That was haunting Brandi, just beautiful.
Too beautiful for words. Her voice has it’s own life and it’s a breakthrough of the soul. It’s impossible not to feel deeply listening to that amazing soul pour out of her.
I've always told my wife that I'm not in love with Brandi....I'm deeply, thoroughly, completely in love with her voice. Nearly 15 years after I was introduced to her first studio album the butterflies are still fluttering in my stomach, my heart thrums with excitement, and I'm filled with pure joy every time she starts to sing. My wife- unfortunately for me- also happens to have a crush on Brandi herself....but I can't fault her for that, now can I?
My husband knows she is on the "list". You know...everyone has a list. Mine are 1- tom ellis from lucifer, 2- captain jack harkness from Doctor Who and 3- Brandi fckin Carlisle
@@drepage4857 LOL I’m like totally a low-Kinsey-number cishet dude but Captain Jack is also on my “list” (which does mean less now I’m widowed, but still). Not so much Barrowman as such, though he is certainly a very pretty example of a human person. It’s just that I know that I couldn’t resist “you, me, now” from Jack. 🤷🏽♂️
This is so awesome! I love the way she sings this. Her voice is perfection, so effortless for her. She always has so much fun performing. LOVE< LOVE< LOVE this woman!!
Very nice...I think it is beautiful that you are exposing a whole generation of people to Joni's music. And some of them just might really need to hear it.
Loved this rendition as only Brandi could do it. I just had to recall when the ensemble came in with the violins and piano that Joni did this with a dulcimer.
God Brandi the tears are flowing. Just beautiful. I'll never forget your voice. Make a single please. I cant believe I just discovered you in 2022.I love u dearly.❤
I used to do a folk show on college radio ages ago and we had all the greatest Joni Mitchell albums in the station. Having flashbacks to those fun days when I was fearless ❤
I’m watching this with a bowl of popcorn and I’m just crying because wow, Brandi ✨ So sad that she decided to cancel her show in the Netherlands in a month, I was beyond excited to finally see her 😔😭
Wow! Funny we each must be ready to understand Joni. I have I think really rediscovered her much like what occurred before her for me and that happened to be Dylan. They each know the truth in their own way. Each went through artistic and personal phases and now hopefully can savor some of the memories. But something tells me each artist in this caliber never looks back. To look back means death to a true artist, always moving forward into a new phase or project is where they catch the spark. Not in the past. Like Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot Joni, Dylan, Nilsson,Freddie Mercury, Prince, only to name a very few of the many great artists who lovingly played their old tunes for dedicated fans but chose to focus on the new ones. If you go back for any interviews they always want you to move forward; that dwelling on the past stagnates the soul and I believe this is what drives the true artistic passion. Another one who comes to mind only because I admired him and he died last year was Karl Lagerfeld. So fascinating to hear him explain this principle during an interview done in French with ENG subtitles where he sketched while answering the questions for Vogue I believe anyway I’m paraphrasing but he says that if you dwell on the past that dries up creativity and thus more inspiration for the next phase of inspiration 😎 This gal has been given a gift. Sounds like the first one was finding her wife and the second was being able to meet Joni in the flesh. The third seems to be her musical inspiration and work to interpret Joni. Her work is not shallow and it’s not always easy to find new meaning but her songs are so powerful wow! Great singing here and soul 😎
You are so right Simone. I remember Prince saying in an interview that he is always moving forward with new songs/writing, sounds and developing his vision for his future works. He didn’t want to dwell on the past although he sang songs from his past (mostly to please audiences) he said he was always looking to the next project. He worked like crazy and ended up producing more than probably any other artist (in light of all the songs that have been found in his vault). Sure hope we get to hear the rest of his work. He LOVED Joni Mitchell too. Her concert was one of the first concerts he ever went to. He sang A Case of You also.
