Ikea stove should be a little over the ground in order to have up draft from below. So really no good comparison.

In the end I think they are all good. That Solo stove is a sweet little thing as well. My preference has always been to find something that nests within or around the rest of my cook kit. I always tell my friends to first figure out what kind of pot they plan to use, then proceed from there. Which begs the question: what pot ya got? Cheers from a hopeless pyromaniac in Montreal QC

I love the IKEA as a small burn barrel ; sort of a fireplace. The Lixada stove is a heating beast. I also have the other style gasifier stove. They're all amazing. Get some stainless steel skewers to go along with the IKEA (maybe add a piece of grill cloth) and you'll find yourself in a world of new possibilities.
@jspate61
@jspate61 3 года назад
I'll reply to both of your comments here, but first, many thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on both the content and the presentation. Greatly appreciated. I love both of these stove/pot combo kits for very different reasons. The DIY aspect of the IKEA set always blows my mind whenever I use it. I paid $5.00 CAD for the fire pot. The 1 liter cook pot was formerly a stainless steel measuring cup. which cost me $7.00 CAD (total investment in this cook kit:$12.00 CAD!!) I pulled the handle off the cup to make it nest inside the IKEA fire pot. I could go on for ages about the evolution of the cook pot (bail handle and lid). I found a couple of steel tent pegs at a camp site years ago at Lac St. Jean here in Quebec. I use two of them as pot supports. They lock into place at any level I desire on the IKDEA fire pot. The other amazing thing about the fire pot is that it makes for a reasonable wind screen for my back-up alcohol burner (my version of the Fancy Feast stove). The Refectix pot cozy is what holds everything together inside the fire pot. I am so embarrassed to think about how many hours I have spent in efforts to perfect this system. The Lixada "wood gasser" is a bit of a misnomer. Technically it is only a partial wood gasser, but close enough in my book! I love this stove for its beautiful simplicity (three pieces) and engineering design. As a camp fire, it has stunning visual appeal and is ridiculously easy to use. When packed inside my GSI Soloist pot, there is still room to nest a 4 ounce fuel bottle and my chopped down version of a Fancy Feast alchy stove. This set up obviously set me back a few more Loonies and Toonies ($1.00 and $2.00 Canadian coins respectively) than the IKEA fire pot. The Lixada stove was $25.00 and the GSI pot was $35.00. The current lid for that pot was an after market aluminum lid with cost me an additional $10.00 from GSI. So if I do the math correctly, that comes to somewhere around $70.00 I think. Yikes! It shames me to think I spent so much, since I am, after all, a cheap bastard. But the joy and reliability of this set up is priceless. Its funny that you mentioned the idea of a grill cloth because just last week I was playing with both of these stoves and came to a similar conclusion. Your comment has reinforced this thought. Stay tuned for more to come on this. Closing comment: the Lixada stove came with a cross piece that sits on top of the stove. This enables the user to place smaller pots or cups on top of the stove. I use this cross piece under the IKEA fire pot as a means of elevating the pot above the ground for better updraft. Apparently the fact that I had not done this soon irritated a number of my viewers. Problem solved. Cheers from Montreal QC

@hard2getitrightagain314 3 года назад
@@jspate61 huh! It now irritates me a little bit that I never thought to use the crossmembers under the Ikea. My strainer stove has bolts stuck through the bottom to serve as feet. I guess now I'm going to the store today to buy a fresh one. I can use Mr Frankenbolt foot stove in the pickup truck where it won't punch holes in nearly as much expensive gear! I love gazing into a well-made fire. I find it intensely therapeutic in an evening after a difficult or even a delightful day.

For years now my IKEA hobo stove with DIY billy can was my "go to" kit for any outdoor adventure. I made it all with me very own hands, so what's not to love. But I have to say that Lixada wood gasser is one badass piece of kit (especially for the price). 10 out of 10. I strongly urge you to try one. At $25 (CAD) they are practically disposable. Well, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but before going the titanium route (mo money, beeotch), give that cheap Chinese stainless steel rig a try. Cheers from Montreal QC.

I have almost reached the point where I no longer feel the need to carry my back-up DIY alchy stove (almost). It pays to verse yourself in the ways and means of cooking with wood, regardless of what mother nature tosses in front of you. Personally, I tend to rely too much on birch bark. But it is just the most perfect fire starter. And around here it is so plentiful, so why not. Thanks for watching, and hope that all is well on your end of the spectrum. Cheers from Montreal QC.

Excellent video with a surprising result too. I would have expected to see the Lixada boil your water much quicker to be honest, just goes to show doesn't it? One negative about the Lixada, at least the one I bought off Amazon, is that mine got left out in a little shower ( DOH! ) and there was some evidence of rust the next day. Not much but it makes me wonder about the quality of that Chinese stainless steel. That will teach me to get distracted whilst leaving it out to cool! Ah well it is even cheaper over here in the UK, so I will try to not worry, but your influence affects even here, cheap is good; waste is baaad. The Lixada does run very hot though, which I am not sure I really like. I will have to keep searching for the perfect solution, not that will be too much of a chore... One way to improve the Ikea pot stove is to get the slightly bigger one and add a gap at the front to refuel it, which whilst it makes the whole thing slightly heavier, what with it being a larger pot, the view of those flames is very good isn't it?
@jspate61
@jspate61 4 года назад
Here's an interesting tip: the Lixada stove included a two piece pot stand that sits on top of the stove (presumably for small diameter pots or cups). I like to use that pot stand underneath my IKEA fire pot in order to optimize airflow. I have found that I can do without it, but its always a gas to see how much better you can make something work. You can further improve performance by adding a windscreen around the entire works. Just make sure the windscreen has plenty of breather holes around the bottom. Makes that IKEA fire pot take off like a house on fire. Cheers from Montreal QC

@@jspate61... Hey, thanks for the response. I've only recently taken up the design and building of little camp stoves. In fact, I'm starting with the Ikea and just got one a week ago. I saw a version in that a guy attached one-screw half conduit holders to the bottom and created stable feet that could be tucked in. I also think that wrapping heavy-duty foil loosely around the Ikea will direct heat and help with the secondary burn of the wood (wood gas). Anyway, thank you for your experiment and for getting back to me. Videos like yours are helping me learn. Even your experiment here gave me ideas. Be well. Respects.

A couple of years ago I did a video called supercharging the Ikea fire pot. That involved using an aluminum wind screen and pot stand underneath. It was great fun, but ultimately not necessary for the efficient functionality of the Ikea fire pot. I should mention that I currently only use the fire pot only as a portable firepit. All my cooking is now done on a Trangia storm cooker. Cheers.

Hey, I'm only 61😀! It's really great being able to actually do more than just boil water on these things. But nature has an uncanny ability to foil our best aspirations. So it goes. Still, I keep lugging these wood burners around with me on all my adventures. I have discovered that they work beautifully as a dedicated campfire. Some might call it more of a glorified candle. But if a little ambiance is what you're after without burning down the forest or drawing unwanted attention these babies are just the ticket. Cheers Philly.
