To facilitate an enjoyable shave away from the pleasantries of my bathroom, I have constructed a rudimentary 'mobile outdoor shaving station' from left-over timber which allows me to enjoy the great outdoors as I take my shaves in the changing elements of the seasons.
Join me on my endeavour to enjoy a relaxing shave with a safety razor, bathed in the brilliant sunlight and warming heat of a summer afternoon.

A wonderful memory you bought to me today. My first memories of watching my dad shave was him using a 3 piece Gillette razor gifted by the Red Cross when we came to the states. And he used regular hand soap bar. Hard times back then. Thank you Mate.

Have bought a 50 ml from a local chemist and am mightily impressed, may even try it as an aftershave as per your suggestions, hope the collar bone healed well. Great content as always, who would have thought a hotel soap bar could double as shaving soap, I certainly didn't, can't really think why though!

I rather enjoyed this video, and the concept. You really can shave with any soap. That said, whilst that may be the case if you're a utilitarian shaver, there is a lot to be said for the luxury of a fine shave for the mind. I'm a lover of the straight razor and a fine soap, and it's less of a job and more of a treatment for me. Also, boar brushes are grand.

I can testify to this. It is difficult to find a shaving brush where I live. So I make do with a bar of soap lathered on by hand. Even if the lather is not strong, there is still enough lubricant to allow the blade to glide over the skin. I will say this though, it is better to use witch hazel or a non-alcoholic aftershave afterwards to avoid irritating the skin. If you do want the fragrance, you could apply it to the back of your neck.
@TheChapsGuide

You are absolutely right sir, any soap will do the trip, even washing up liquid if an absolute emergency. I actually use witch hazel in my usual daily post-shave routine (Humphreys). It works a treat and keeps the face in good order. Thanks for the comment.

I love to shave in the nature, end your video to , wonderfull , you can try a little bit of Proraso green, end like a Taylor it is a nice , perfect ;sapone ; cream shave in my opinion. I have a request also , to work a little bit more with the brush, in terms of time. Great shave 🖒

I guess if you’re stuck and absolutely need a shave, you can go down this route. But the pleasure of the shaving experience is using proper quality products. I’d rather spend the money on Taylor of old bond street shave cream which last 6 months for me than steep to a bar of soap to shave with

Interesting experiment indeed. Just shows budget shaves are there to be had. I think I would still opt for a dedicated shaving soap purely from the fact that the hand soap dissipates on the face rather rapidly. Something like LaToja Sensitive cream a couple of Euros which I picked up in Spain provides an outstanding level of protection and glide.

Greetings, Ash! I just came across your chanel, watched almost all of your videos within 3 days and subscribed! 👍🏻 After watching this and the other vid with/on Mandate, I pulled the Amazon-trigger and ordered a 50 ml Aftershave for just under 7 € shipped. 😲 I‘m from 1976, so it’s my „birth year cologne“, haha 😂 Hope it‘s as good as described. You should try CHANEL Egoiste, it‘s better(!) than „niche-quality“ from a designer house. Looking forward to your next videos. Best regards from Germany, Dan

@@TheChapsGuide Thanks for the warm welcome. I am wondering what you think of Truefitt & Hill, as you always only mention TOBS, Harris, Floris and Trumper? 🤔
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
I've used T & H and Forbes & Castle and a wide variety of other brands (in fact, I really like T & H Spanish Leather), its just that over time, I have favoured TOBS and Trumper as my go-to preferences. I have nothing against any other brands (other than these new self-proclaimed 'artisan' brands, that charge huge prices for average products, just due to a trendy name and label on the tub). My 2 all time favorite shave creams are TOBS Cedarwood and Trumpers Spanish Leather (or Eucris). Nothing against T & H, but these are my faves!
@dondan2973
@dondan2973 3 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide Trumper‘s Spanish Leather, Limes and Eucris, TOBS Jermyn St. Coll. and Platinum, T&H Apsley (like Terre d‘Hermes) and St. James of London Cedarwood & Clarysage are my all time favorits. They are outstanding quality for the price! In fact, my first ever high quality cream was TOBS Jermyn St. Coll. I bought it almost 10 years ago used ca. 2/3 of it, and the remaining 1/3 is still as on the first day! A company named Crightons produces most of the creams for the aforementioned brands. I think the same of these new „artisans“. I sunk several 100’s of € for their soaps/creams. They are praised by many, mostly by US guys, saying their products are far ahead TOBS, Trumper, T&H etc. But in fact they are mostly in best case mediocre, and only the producer knows what he put in, when cooking them in the kitchen or shed, whereas TOBS etc. have 100-200 years of experience and have to fulfill strict EU laws. Best regards, Dan

Good gracious, Mandate! crikey. When you bring out the Hi-Karate, I will know that the years have taken their toll on the grey cells ;-) Its an interesting video to do and as you say making a point. There have been times in my life when pennies were not plentiful and in those days I used the Boots own brand shaving puck, which lasted ages and was cheap as chips. I found it to be considerably better than hand soap for the reason you found which is that hand soap loses its lather. That was definitely an excellent effort, particularly with limited movement.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
You joke about hi-Karate, but I actually went looking for it as part of the time-travelling fragrance journey I am presently on. Sadly it is no longer in production, but this advert is hilarious:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_vq94cxeCw8.html I just love the deadpan delivery of the narrator.

Pears Soap is a good shaving soap. In fact I sometimes mix it with Mitchells Wool Fat. But using a none dedicated shaving soap is not without risk. If not enough cushion and slickness the chance of razor burn, rash and ingrowns is quite high. The post shave feel wouldn't be that good either. But if push comes to shove and you have nothing else to hand it's a good alternative. I like shaving soap sticks for travel. Just over £1. Great presentation Ashley, good shave

What makes the biggest difference in my experience is the base if the soap. I do own around 6 different fragrances of Taylors and I do love them. But I also got some american artisan soap from the Stirling soap company. And I must say that I think that I get smoother shaves with it. The difference is that Stirling uses beef tallow as their base while Taylors uses vegetable glycerine. I think that beef tallow provides a slicker lather than glycerine does. So I think trying out different soaps and creams is actually quite insightful. Stirling also goes crazy with the scents which I really enjoy. Pineapple scent with menthol is my new favourite.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
You are entirely correct sir, the underlying base of the soap provides that long-lasting lather and cannot be bettered by cheap soap as evidenced in this video. But it was an interesting experiment. I've not yet experienced Stirling - sounds like its worth a punt.
@GuardsmanHenrik
@GuardsmanHenrik 3 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide Stirling is indeed a great soap with interesting scents. It is from the US but there is a UK based website that also sells their products. Its called shavingtime.co.uk Stirling soaps are very reasonable priced, at least in the US they only cost around $13. From shavingtime they cost a bit more, because you have that additional vendor. I think they sell them for around 15 pounds or so. I would definitely give them a try, they are a fan favourite in the shaving forums.

In contrast to my own observations in this video, I actually caved in and treated myself to a tub of Trumper's Eucris shave cream last night. Its the brand used. by James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (the novel). I haven't smelled it for years, so it will be a nice surprise. Treat yourself to something nice - the new Taylors Tobacco Leaf cream is really growing on me of late and has become one of my firm favourites.

I'm also a big tobacco fan - although Tom Ford's stuff is a bit rich for my blood. I have a bottle of Aramis Tobacco Reserve that really hit the mark for me, and its cheap(ish) too! Layers exceptionally well with the TOBS tobacco leaf.

I’m going to go against the grain here (see what I did there?) and say that a poor shaving soap or cream can have a negative effect on your shave. I agree there is a lot of soaps out there and you sometimes feel obliged to buy a new one, but if spend £15 - £20 on a good quality soap it will last 10 times longer than a hotel soap and will reduce nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs. Also the formulas do make a difference in my opinionated opinion and having used a lot. I agree that you can use anything and you don’t have to spend a lot of money on soaps, creams etc and I understand the sentiment of this video, but invest in good items and they will last. It’s cliche, but you get what you pay for. Regardless though good video Ash.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
Cheers for the comment Andy, you make a good point, the cheap, hotel soap did not hold a lather as long as a soap with more fat content, but, to be honest, the level of shave was very favourable with some 'artisan' soaps I've forked out £15 for in the past. Since makin g this video, I have been experimenting with other cheap soap options and have found that Dove soap (cheap as chips in most places) offers a superb shave option with long-lasting and luxurious lather to match most ferociously priced 'prestige' brands. In my thinking, the performance is all about the same with most soaps (creams included) and many people are sucked into the niche marketing of the products, with some pretty bizarre names and explanations of the fragrances within. I've decided to step off that train and reserve my purchases to quality performers, who deliver bang for buck and can explain to me in simple terms what the product smells like. It's an interesting topic - worth exploring further.
@theopinionatedbrit
@theopinionatedbrit 3 года назад
I can’t argue with the point you have made mate, but you don’t have to spend hundreds on soaps and hardware. A lot of wet shavers see it as a hobby so like to have the newest items, but you don’t have to do that. Find what works and stick with it. If that’s a hotel soap then happy days, if it’s a ‘premium’ artisan made soap or cream that’s ok too. My grandad used to shave with imperial lather soap I thinks so if it was good enough for him I might give it a go!
