A Classic Arko Shave - Wilkinson Sword DE Razor 

Hi Paul,Back to basics again, I have never got on with the smell of Arko but each to there own, lovely lilies, I don't know where you get time to breath what with shaving videos, vlogs, postie, cooking , gardening and now judging at the flower show fantastic. - All the Best Mark.

In regard to the cleaning, here's what I do: 1) rinse and shake dry with the blade still in the razor. 2) I have a canning jar that is partially filled with 91% alcohol, with some lemon oil in there. I swirl the razor, still assembled, in that jar for several seconds. 3) The alcohol displaces the water and lifts the soap residue, while a bit of the lemon oil stays on the razor and blade as a protective coating. I shake the excess off into the jar, then wipe of the remainder from the outside surfaces. The razors sit in open air, and the alcohol evaporates out in a few minutes. 4)I do a full cleaning when it's time to change blades. This has seemed to work well, and I've never had a blade corrode.

perhaps Mrs H should give her pearls of wisdom on camera. Then we can show our SWMBO how it should be. I am fairly careful with my buying habits, though I may have just gone overboard with my blades. For me, I try different combinations of razor/soap/cream/blade and brush each day. I have made a chart showing then combos to come. It works really well.

Hi Paul. I love it when you use the more basic products as it truly highlights how cost effective DE shaving really is and how easy it is for anyone to do. I had a straight shave in a Turkish barbers in Wokingham the other day and as he put the brush to my face I said "Is that Arko?" and he replied "yes." Good shave Paul, got to love the good ole Arko soap. Can't beat it for the price. I need to try some of the super medicated hazel, I use the original and the rose. But that stuff needs to make its way to my den.

Many thanks for your informative and entertaining review on the Wilkinson razor. I've been shaving with Gillette Sensor for 30+ years, but the cartridges have recently been discontinued (they were becoming harder to find anyway and the price had soared over the years.) This has persuaded me to get back into DE shaving, and I this week I bought a Merkur 34c. Although I started shaving back in the late 1950s (with, I think, a Gillette butterfly-style DE razor), I've a wee bit of trepidation about using the Merkur first. For this reason I've ordered the Wilkinson DE, which I think I'll use to restart DE shaving until I regain confidence (as I remember - out of necessity - a styptic stick had always to be near to hand when I shaved the DE way back in the 60s and 70s ;-) ).

I expected to get more nicks, compared to the mach3, but guess what. It didn't happen! I don't know why really, but I haven't got one single cut (yet) with the merkur, no doubt i will though. Perhaps I'm just more careful doing the shave, following the tips from shaving videos. Thank you for all yours Paul.

The shaving sticks look like a great deal, Paul. I've been really tempted to order Arko, Palmolive, and Derby soap sticks, but I already have years worth of soap. So maybe I should fight that temptation. :P

I wish I could love Arko. I love the idea of Arko: great price and great performance. The smell doesn't even bother me. And I use sticks exclusively. But alas, it dries my skin. Makes me a little sad. And yes, enjoying my shaves here: Wolfman OC head on a Weber Classic handle; ShaveMac Finest brush. Delightful. Top shelf shave! You're always fun to watch. Best from Bangkok.

Good shave...,The Wilkinson Razor you used cost about 9 dollars US or 12 £ in whales....I have wanted one for a long time for travel...So I won't cry if I lose it...Mrs H is truely a beauty. I wished her a Happy Birth Day...and yes life is so much easier When husband and wife allow each other to pursue their Hobbies and interests....The Shave was an exercise in comfort...and control....No problems no worries small Nick..but I think on the whole I would call that a..."Safe Shave"...for beginners.....low cost..good results..a real confidence Builder for the new shaver..."Training Wheels"...Dinner sounds like 😃 enjoy...Did you get a cake for desert...Girls like cake...lol...Got to go the new Cockapoo puppy needs a walk...and I'm the only one up....Enjoy the week...water the peppers and have a pint or three...cheers

Some times I just want a shave . I will use arko . Wilkerson blue bowl or nivia shave cream. . All are ok and cheap .

White lilies is very beautiful.) Paul, do you know that there is a Witch Hazel called Humphreys. I recently found out it watching video from Kensurf channel. I also noticed that the mild razors can cut, also because they can quickly become cluttered. And of course with mild razors users tend to be more careless. I've always liked the smell of Arco cream, but it have dries quickly while shaving and tightens skin after. I think it's because I have dry skin. So I usually either make it liquid, or add glycerin. Please accept my congratulations about Misis H's birthday. Now I count, that your birthday on June 23. I wipe the blades with my fingertips, in the direction from the middle to the edge. And I make a point on the paper envelope with permanent marker that I used it.

Excellent advice!! I have been "stropping" my blades since I first started DE shaving a year ago. That's why I can get 5 to 6 shaves out of a Personna Red if I want but normally do 3 shaves per blade. or 1 and toss if blade is not in my top 10 list. btw, Paul, I forget who first gave me this advice a year ago? perhaps it was you???

I was suprised how mild is this razor. I used Muhle r89 before this one, and in my opinion wilkinson Classic is milder and more forgiving than my r89. Also the wilkinson sword blades works great in this razor. In r89 they are a little bit harsh.

Is there any reason as to why you shaved sideways on your second shave? I'm new to DE razor's, just ordered an EJ DE89

I have two gillettes, one belonged to my great grandfather, I believe from around 1920, and the other from my grandfather probably from 1950, which is the aggressive one, both were made in Brazil, but I have no idea what model they are, do you know any website with the models and dates or anyway that I could find out ?

Paul those gillette Wilkinson Sword blades that has given you 9 shaves, are they single or double wraped.

A comment about blade stropping. I have been under a different impressio. Most shavers don't realize it but EVERY blade made, except carbon steel blades, is coated with Teflon. The steel edge itself needs a thin layer of Teflon to be smooth enough to use. Teflon bonds very poorly to stainless steel. So by stropping you remove the Teflon coating thereby making the blade harsher to shave with and reducing blade life. Don't know what that is in Celsius but Bloody Hell, it was so hot I tried to stay indoors under the AC all day ! I like it and I only use vintage products. The modern stuff is soulless and a vintage doubleedge blade does a better job anyway. Who cares what the next man does.
