I freaking hated it when people came into the restaurant right at close. You always knew which waiter needed the tip most because they’d volunteer to stay. As always I enjoyed your discussion.

I've fallen out of love with Hemingway over the years, but he is truly a master of saying so much by saying so little. This is a 10/10 for me. And for the record, as a former restaurant worker/waiter/cook/manager, I absolutely loathed people who came in right at closing time. So inconsiderate! 😡😠🤬

I'm writing an essay for class about one of the short stories that we read. I found your video by chance. There were 10 short stories to choose from, and I happened to choose "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place". Then, out of all the videos on youtube about this story, I happened to click on your video. I really enjoyed the discussion and points of view that you guys brought up. Great job, and thank you for the content. Your video will be quoted and cited in my essay. I will also recommend your channel to my professor and classmates.

The geography of the story indicates the each characters motivation. The young man’s isn’t selfish so much as he intuits what the old man is after and his glimpse of his future fills him with fear, but he is young so he postures himself against impending oblivion with a lot of bluster. The other waiter tries to bargain with oblivion. And the old man just wants to keep oblivion at bay for one more night. It’s an existential horror story. And it is a masterpiece.

One cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what was great in the morning will be of little importance in the evening, and what in the morning was true will at evening become a lie. -C. G. Jung "The first half of life is spent building our sense of identity, importance, and security - the importance and value of a healthy ego structure. But inevitably, often through failure or a significant loss, this is only the worldly acceptable you. In the second half of life, the ego still has a place, but now in the service of the True Self or soul, your inner and inherent identity. Your ego is the container that holds you all together, so now its strength is an advantage. Someone who can see their ego in this way is probably what we mean by a “grounded” person." -- R Rohr Never thought I'd have quotes from Jung and Rohr come to mind while listening to a talk about a Hemingway short story...

_First!_ I think that the Young Man is most selfish . . . (That's coming from a Middle Age Man!) We _agree,_ Una! (I like Krypto's point about the Middle-Aged Man, tho, too.) Love me some Papa! Thx, gents . . . 😎📚🤓

I know I'm in the minority with this, but I'm having a hard time seeing the profundity in this story. I'm a newb to this stuff though.

I wouldn’t say you’re in the minority. Some things may not be a big deal to you, and some may not be a big deal to you right now. I 100% was in same boat as you the first time I read it. Not sure why it hit home well now but things change!! Best of luck
