Always love it when I see one of your photography videos has been uploaded. After watching I typically drop everything and take a photo walk for myself. I shoot almost exclusively black and white film and typically use dramatic contrasting colors to drive my composition.

I do go pattern first, like the bridge you are on, at 9:51, as I am a urban landscape, cars/boats shooter, so this works for both colour and B&W, also the contrast of materials, so if I have film in, I know it will work, as there is contrast there to separate tones in all parts of the image, so no detail is lost in highlights or shadows.

The D700 was my first serious full frame camera, I still own it, it's on a shelf, it doesn't power on anymore, hoping someone can fix it someday for me. Besides that, love the processing of these videos, I see the red halation ! Also love the format, the pace, the music, the silence in-between, well done you two.

yes, Lucy, I agree, was my first Nikon, I had a Pentax K200D first ever, but that had an awkward way of using the manual controls, so the D700 is what I went for, a 'pro' body of it's time, and (history fact here), due to the li content in its battery, one of the longest lasting for the dslr series; it has a blind for the viewfinder, manual dials for shooting mode, drive mode, and many customisable buttons and functions to assign them to, Plus an ability to use older AF/AF-D lenses via a menu where you set the max aperture, so it can meter right, it can use many of the available speedlights, not radio trigger, of coarse, due to the 10 pin connection for acc.'s . I get your gripe about usability, I got a hasselblad H1 for this very reason, it's simple layout, minimum options, and ease of getting to what you want fast, via the physical buttons, AND you can use film or digital on the one body/lens so if you have questions about glare, etc. just switch out for digital, and use the meter/histogram for highlight warnings, and to see if its Silhouetted or not, a great compromise, for technology, it still costs a bit though, but WELL worth it!!!

Makes me want to pick up my D200 again... An interesting (and important!) question to figure out, but I think I gravitate towards shape or subject first in my compositions. But I'll have to try and experiment shooting by focusing on colour. Really love the vibrant colour and edit on this video tho!
@LucyLumen
@LucyLumen Месяц назад
Shape is another good one! I didn’t think about that but that is really important to me too especially when composing the minimilst stuff or buildings etc. Hope you enjoy looking for colour and glad you like the video and the edit. Thank you 🙏🏻

Lucy I have not shot film since 2005 when I got my first DSLR when the new Pentax 17 film camera recently came out I decided to fix my Spotamatic SP11 it needed new light Seals which I replaced. My favorite film was Kodak ASA 400 as it gave me more latitude in my pictures. I'm sure my photography has changed in the intervening years it will interesting to compre my pictures between then and now with film

I have several DSLRs, which, like my film cameras, I rotate. My D700 is a favourite, as it has a very unique sensor, and has tones that are extremely flexible in post-processing. It is a heavy beast, especially with a battery grip, but well worth a go! I will never sell mine!

I love the philosophy behind your decision making process. Specifically the idea that a photo could have been taken anywhere and of things that maybe don’t really belong. If I can, I try to find interesting light & color first, but I’ll never pass up an abstract pattern or something geometric.

Very nice shots. What always makes me get out my camera is interesting light. In general the city where I live is less colorful, than what I see from other countries in photos and videos. I do look for color, but I mostly find them during summer and autumn, when there are plants, flowers and berries etc.

Lucy if you like the 60mm macro, try the AF-D 105 mm 2.8 with the PN-11 ext. tube (can purchase them as a set)- the macro is only with the PN attached, otherwise an EXCELENT portrait lens, I got this, and have used it for family shooting, fantastic, Plus it goes down to f32 instead of the F16/22 of the other lenses, so at F11/16 no diffraction!, as it's further away from the minimum setting. Also, this lens is long, so using the PN-11 allows you to mount the system from the collar on it, balancing the rig.

Interesting take on photographing color. I do however differ on the opinion that a focusless photographer is the worst kind. Even if you are focusing on color and composition, you can never predict what you are going to come across. Keeping an open mind is the more democratic approach especially when you are on a photo walk just like you were. Putting limitations on yourself is a good exercise in the beginning but once you've developed an individual and unique style, putting limitations on yourself is actually going to limit your potential.

Good video! Got one myself and was wondering what lens you use (polerasing filter?) ? Do je prefer manual focus of the D700 and vintage glass btw? Or those old AF lenses?

Can I ask what file type shot in? I have a Nikon D2Xs and really struggled to get bold and colorful shots from the sensor. I know the D700 is a little newer and has a larger sensor, but the colour science should be quite similar. I have switched to Fine JPG and shoot in the bolder color mode to get more pleasing results. Did you find this the same using the 700. I tried TIFF but the file sizes were MASSIVE 36mb ever time. Great video. Edit: I posted before you mentioned raw at the end lol.

@@LucyLumen :D I still have my Nikon F6 and F3, and Canon New F1 and EOS 3, and I just got a Pentax 17 for fun :) As for digital cameras, I won't list them all because I have too many, but from the Nikon Zfc to the Z8, to the Panasonic S9 and S1R, skipping the ones in between I had plenty to work with. So, if I had to keep only one digital camera, it would be the Nikon D3S, although I also had the D4. But when you have the Z8, it's a bit hard to go back to digital SLRs. Only film cameras like the F6, EOS 3, or EOS 1v I still feel comfortable using, but with digital cameras, I can't do without IBIS anymore

No. Everyone is NOT staring. Most people on this planet don't give a darn whether you even exist. Or me. Or anyone else. They don't stare. It's in your head only. They walk by and will barely remember having "seen someone with a camera, or not?". 99% of embarrassment exists in one's head only. Once you accept you (any anyone else) is not important enough to be stared at, the anxiety disappears into oblivion and you could dance through the streets in a pink ballerina dress with a giant green Kermit in your arms. Nobody cares. So you shouldn't either. Enjoy all the moments. Nobody stares.

It’s so bright in Australia so I kept them on otherwise I’m squinting like crazy. They don’t change it that much when you look through plus the colours I’m looking for aren’t like nuanced colours. I’m looking for bright pops of yellow or red which is easy to spot with tinted glasses on! Thanks for watching.

I'm used to wearing warm tinted sunglasses at work and they're also polarized so they make colors stand out and makes the sky and clouds more detailed so that way I get a preview of what the photo will look like with warming filter and a polarizer.
