John, thank you so much for this series. This is exactly what I need - to demystify the recording and production process. Your explanations are clear. And your advice here is spot on. Simplify and learnt he for elements - compression, reverb, etc., and learn those very well. I love it! I am looking forward to viewingthe entire series and learning a lot. Thanks!

Great analogy. Makes me realise the need to focus on the craft. Don't want to be 'all the gear no idea'.

Really solid, and I especially appreciated your “art gallery” analogy.

Great video. So true, I wish I could have listened to myself way back when before I bought plug-in after plug-in thinking it would do it for me ;-) Need to focus on the basics and get something simple and clean produced. Thanks again.

Love your approach to instruction, keep up the great work. On the subject of listening, you mentioned not thinking about the compressor on a Bob Dylan record. Over the years I've become more of a critical listener which makes me more conscious of the sonic make up of a song and recording. My brain breaks down the tempo, key, time signature, instrumentation, etc first before I can become a expressive listener as you described. Having worked industry for while I often hear a synth in a song and name the preset being used. My girlfriend hates it! haha. She doesn't think I enjoy music because I'm constantly breaking it down to the DNA. In a lot of cases she's right, so what you describe is basically the same thing, I would just encourage both. You will organically become a critical listener the more educated and experienced, it's the yang energy if you don't mind me going there haha. balance it with some yin expressive listening and your art flows.

That's kinda weird - was just listening to a bit of Dylan and was wondering about the compression used :) I appreciate the analogy though. Good work!
