It's a gift for us tbh. The larger the audience, the worse the audience. The algorithm is pushing it now to us because we are similar in some way. That makes for a targeted in depth conversation to be had in the comments. Plucking the weeds to allow the flowers to grow. I've never even seen this beautiful woman before, but alas, our algorithm overlords blessings runneth over for once.

Wouldn't be surprised if it actually is her who plays all the instruments in this... Recently saw a video of her on instagram, messing around in the studio, writing a song (not this one)... And she was playing everything, drums, bass, guitar & piano!

I think she plays all of them to create the song, then gets them recorded by professional players. So, she records the demo, but her playing's not featured on the final track. Since she's not usually credited in the band.
I’ve just discovered Willow. And thought I’d check out some reactions to this song. What amazes me is there’s ANOTHER song using 7/4 on the same album! 😂
I’d say Willow uses unusual time signatures and the syncopation in her vocal and music style at times can sound like a time signature change. I love the intro to this song and rhythm and vocal styles. Willow leveled up on this song for sure, it’s BRILLIANT!🎶💜🎶
I love progressive pop. The mix of catchy songcraft with the more complex elements is just pure ear candy to me. I never would have expected it from one of Will Smith's kids, but I'm definitely going to have to check out the album when it drops next week.
Got any other earworms in progressive pop? This album is a modern funk jazz pop masterpiece that reminds me of Reign of Kindo a lot, but would love more suggestions.
Not to mention the layered symbolism within the video; specifically the “Hangman’s Pose “ representing the ending of the age of Pisces and the literal meaning of enlightenment. Brings the lyrics to a literal esoteric sense visually. Absolutely brilliant!
Sound not unfamiliar. I hear vibes of neo-soul/acid jazz like Amel Larrieux, Kam Franklin, Jill Scott and N'dea Davenport. After hearing this song I was curious to listen to the album which is newly released which features Jon Batiste. Promising talent indeed.
Im happy this is here Beth, I have been spreading this as much as I can. It has been a very long time since something new has excited me this much, I hope this ends up being a seed for coming musicians that moves us away from simplistic loops, nauseating rhythmic 'hooks', meaningless lyrics that are bleached into blandness by autotune. This is creativity, this is art, this is style, funk, depth and smart. Bold, refreshing, exciting. Fingers crossed, but I've been happy in the moment each time hearing this. ' the fear is not real ' also takes my breath away. Bravo, WIllow and co!
Her whole album Empathogen is absolutely magical. I haven't love an album from top to bottom in a long while. It's really different from what's hot now.
In the pre chorus where you mentioned it sounded like maybe a time signature change, it seems like a slight change in pattern with a cluster of notes that over two bars still equal 14. Which builds up the tension even more, waiting for the release in the 4/4 of the chorus. Crazy! I loved your analysis and your facial expressions, you can feel the joy of discovering the song.
This is the music that makes me feel self conscious. I'm so jealous that it is sooo good and I love it so much, that I resent myself for not having thought of anything close to this, ever. I have a brain, hands, own all of the same instruments and the ability to play and record them all, yet these kids that barely graduated from school come and make sublime music out of thin air, just like that. Dave Brubeck would've enjoyed this. And the sound, the mic-ing of the drums, feels so proper and natural, like a continuation of the golden age of recording, not abusing effects. Just great, and I mean, flabbergasting, mixing skills. Where did these kids learn?? I feel like the critic in the Rataouille movie, when he tries the rat''s dish and he is transported to his childhood, when I heard this song.
It's not Willow on bass and drums. Apparently on some songs she and her collaborators started with the drum track, then added the bass and then added vocal and the rest including guitar she was reluctant to add. The Tiny Desk concert is: MUSICIANS Willow Smith: vocals Liso Lee: guitar, vocals Zach Tenorio: keys Mohini Dey: bass Taylor "The Pocket Queen" Gordon: drums Mohini Dey I know has already been getting a lot of attention her own for the Indian music influenced bass playing. Rick Beato just interviewed her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DmC2QQESN6E.html
Yes, she is Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith's daughter. Never liked Jada and for what she did to Will Smith and he lost my respect with that slap a few years back, but you can't choose your parents. Love this song though.
You should definitely check out the NPR version, details of her band there ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DmC2QQESN6E.htmlfeature=shared
Conpared to all that generic crap she did previously this is hugely inpressive but I wonder how much of this song is really hers. Will be looking at her career with some hope and interest.
@@RealHomeRecordingSo glad she donated and got on there, because her performance, including the band, was audio euphoria. The live version is better than the studio version.
@@Andy_Paris Predictions are just predictions. If a prediction is correct, people like to think they knew and are a genius, but if they’re wrong, then they magically forget about it and never bring it up, but once they happen to be correct again, then they come out of hiding and get all flashy.
The bassist is Mohini Dey, 27 years old & born in West Bengal, India. She has collaborated with the likes of Steve Vai, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Ruddess, British jazz guitar phenom Guthrie Goven, and so many more here on RU-vid. Her work with Dewa Budiana performing traditional Balinese styles on jazz rock steroids is brilliant. And now with Willow! Rick Beato pronounces this to be the future of Pop music. One can but hope.
Willow's the most talented out of the lot of them, even more than her parents. It's a shame about all the noise and drama around them. It's kind of like she's obviously gotten her opportunity and platform being a nepo baby but unlike most nepos, she's only lasted and grown as an artist the longer she's been out there.
You caught the "yeahuh"! No other reaction has picked up on that little detail and it's my favorite part of the song. Perfectly written and the production makes it pop so well
Great reaction and analysis as always, thanks for explaining the time signatures and rhythm changes, i'm not a musician and don't know about music on a technical level, but i knew there was something special about those rhythms and time signatures, also her singing, voice and lyrics are great.
It's probably Mohini Dey on the bass. She is in the live Tiny Desk Concert with Willow. Mohini is becoming known as one of the best jazz bassists around.
Don't want to be that guy, but the chord progression showen is not correct. David Bennet has a video where he interviews the piano player and they discus the chord progression. The also mention the progression showen.
