In this conversation between Siri designer Tom Gruber and NY Times writer John Markoff, we hear about the state of the art in Conversational Artificial Intelligence. They trace back the intellectual roots of Siri and look forward to what is possible as AI becomes ubiquitous in our lives. What could happen when machine-learned AI is everywhere -- and what could go wrong? Tom Gruber is a product designer and entrepreneur who uses AI technology to augment human intelligence. He was cofounder, CTO, and head of design for the team that created Siri, the first intelligent assistant for everyone. When Siri was released by Apple in 2011, it was a watershed moment in the history of Artificial Intelligence, bringing AI to the mainstream user experience. Now an integral part of Apple’s products, Siri is used more than 2 billion times a week in over 30 countries around the world. At Apple for over 8 years, Tom led the Advanced Development Group that designed and prototyped new capabilities for Siri and related products that bring intelligence to the interface.
Tom promotes the philosophy of Humanistic AI, which he presented in a popular TED talk. He served as founding board member of the Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society.
In previous lives, Tom applied AI to support collective human intelligence. His research at Stanford in ontology engineering helped lay the groundwork for semantic information sharing and the Semantic Web. He invented HyperMail, the open-source software that turns email conversations into collective memories; HyperMail and its progeny have helped to create a dynamic conversational history of the Web. He was founder and CTO of Intraspect Software, which pioneered the space of Collaborative Knowledge Management - software that helps large communities of professionals contribute to and learn from a collective body of knowledge. He designed and built RealTravel, a Collective Knowledge System where travelers from around the world share their experiences.
Tom has served as an advisor to pioneering companies in Social Networks (LinkedIn, Radar Networks), Collaboration (SocialText, Mindjet), and Semantic Search (Powerset / Microsoft and the Internet Archive).
He is passionate about underwater photography and ocean conservation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Currently the internet has 1 million exabytes of information on it 10^24 bytes , the human brain is said to have 2.5 petabytes of possible memory storage ….. the thing that scares me is just like programs that use less storage to give the same “gameplay/reality” I feel we are on the brink of creating true sentient AI , what I fear is the lack of additional storage “reasoning” that said AI will have as it’s known we as humans only use 16% of our brain at any time. The lack of that additional 84% of the bio chemical mesh we have going on in the background constantly I feel will leave the AI devoid of human emotions like empathy mainly. What I’m trying to say is if you try to calculate all possible outcomes of a set of individual rules that a brain can compute as compared to a supercomputer, we are dangerously close to creating AI , the only thing holding it back at this point is connecting to that data fast enough for computers to become sentient but at the same time they will not be swayed by their environment like humans are…. A smell that sparks a memory, a sound that soothes one , a face that sparks irrational thoughts of LOVE . AI will never be these things and so it will eliminate by design any possible threats to its existence. You want to know how to create true Intelligence in the true likeness of mankind? Have children or guide children…. We are our own greatest resource for bettering humanity, not an computer 😉

Do we realize when we are talking about creation AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) similar to capabilities of human beings, that we are talking about a try to create a new live creature in the form of a computer? My observation that human intelligence is indivisible from us being alive.

To me, we have to penetrate the web that connects everything in the universe, learn how to map it out, play with it.
