Kentucky Downs only races seven days, but having the turf course at its best for those seven days is a year-round venture. We catch up with Kentucky Downs' new track superintendent Derek Sullivan, a product of Franklin-Simpson High School who pretty much grew up on the track, including getting his first wasp stings there. Derek, 31, has worked at Kentucky Downs for 15 years, becoming the hand-picked boots on the ground while working with world-renowned track consultant Butch Lehr, who spent 46 years at Churchill Downs. This video was shot on June 26, 2024, when Derek's four-man crew was putting up the Duralock rail for the inner most of three lanes used during the seven-day meet.
