I’m still reeling from Jerry Jeff’s death. Stumbled across this. His music has sustained me since I heard him live for the first time in the 70s. I listen to him almost every day.

First heard Jerry Jeff while in the Army at around 18 years old My Old Charlie Dunn L.A Freeway etc..now 62 and still cant get enough. Saw Jerry Jeff in Melbourne Australia in the 70s and talked my way into the dressing room after the show...shook his hand and gave him a letter. Back then I had to import his albums which took months. Guy Clarke toured here many times sadly we have yet to see Jerry Jeff again. So hope to hear him live again somehow. In spirit he has been at every camp fire every get to together and every lonely night. I often wonder if he realizes how his work shaped the rambling of a young man half the world away for over 40 years. Getting by on getting by.......cheers from Melbourne Australia.......hilly.. PS Hector Saldaña for whats its worth ask a short question and then shut up..lol...don't answer your own questions...ahhhhhh...:)

I wonder if Jerry Jeff realizes what he may mean to many people. Just my life, I heard him first in 1997, when I was 32. It was a year in which JJW never left my cassette player. And I have been LOVIN all his music ever since. Jerry Jeff, I love you man.

I went to Belize in 2008 for Camp Belize and I've been back every year. There I met some of the most amazing people that became my best friends. Amazing pickers and just amazing fans. 200 people a week for 2 weeks to hear JerryJeff play 2 shows each week. Many of my friends had been coming since the late 90's. I think that he does understand what he means to so many of his true fans. Please keep him in your hearts as he battles throat cancer.

I saw Jerry Jeff Walker at the Royal Oak Theater in in the mid-70s. He opened for Tom Waits. It was a strange pairing and I was there to see Tom Waits. Jerry Jeff Why was my introduction to country music. There's a lot of concerts I don't remember, but I'm glad that one stuck with me. It wasn't until the last couple of years that I started digging in to the people that he was friends with and associated with in his younger days. Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley, John Prine, Steve Goodman, etc. Some of the best music I have ever heard and I now listen to almost exclusively. For that alone I thank him for playing that Detroit gig.

I have several Jerry Jeff stories and fabulous concert photos of him from the mid-70s. After one concert in Atlanta, several friends were hanging out in a rare cowboy bar. Jerry Jeff and I were standing there just conversing when my drunk sister-in-law walked up to the bar next to Jackety Jack and bellowed out, "Jerry Jeff Walker sucks." He looked at me and I at him, and I said, "I don't think she much likes you." He laughed it off, and we went on talking. When I said something using his name, my sister-in-law realized who I was talking with and ducked away to the other side of the bar.

For Jerry Jeff fans, this was a real opportunity to learn just so much more about him. Yes, have read Gypsy Songman, however the books narrative ends decades ago. Susan didn't seem overly enthusiastic, she no doubt had her reasons. However, as has been mentioned, the potentially informative "interview" was basically wrecked by the interviewer doing so much talking & fans not learning much more than in the past. Contrast this with the excellent Green Room interview, easily found on YT, where the interviewer had done some research and the far shorter time provided far more information to true Jerry Jeff fans. A great opportunity missed here.

What a nice treat to hear from both JJW and Susan. Agree with comments about the long winded interviewer, but in his defense that can be a tough job, especially if it's just something you do on occasion.

Howdy all and God Bless our Gypsy Songman. It's easy to criticize this program's MC if you don't know the whole story. The health concerns that ultimately took Jerry Jeff Walker from us all were already making full length interviews tough for him when this was recorded. I believe that Mr. Saldaña was asked to lessen the burden on him for that reason. He had many meetings with both Jerry Jeff and Susan Walker leading up to this and they gave their full support for the program. Saldaña has a long and successful career both in music and in music journalism. It's why he was given the incredible responsibility to be the Wittliff Collection's first ever music curator. I hope y'all all get a chance to visit the Collection sometime... pretty good excuse to get off that Freeway!

I'm viewing this after our loss of JJW, & had suspected that health concerns figured into this interview. Here's why: Notice the number of bottles on table at the very beginning. I think some bottles held additives, lemon, glycerin, vinegar, etc., for throat. Susan's FIRST sip came from bottle beside JJW, not beside her bottle. I think her mouth was dry & she knew which bottle contained something for JJW throat. Always good music - and nice to see the wife.

I was tending bar at a Chi Chi's in Fort Lauderdale in 1980 when this new manager walking past the bar heard me quietly singing STONEY to myself. The guy was from Oklahoma and it must have flipped him out because that was the stuff that he'd grown up on. Not many people in Florida were fluent in JJW's music. He pulled me aside and asked "how do you know Jerry Jeff Walker?" We wound up being good friends.

crap interviewer(no offence). "we did it to be tender but tough..." One of JJW's best summaries of not only the motivations but also the times. He was the flour *AND* the pepper in the roux of the cosmic gumbo that became THE Austin sound(Willie was probably the butter!). Don't forget...most of that crowd went on to nuture and focus the sound and ethos of early punk(look it up !). Susan, the ultimate Austin salon inspiration...her impact on the *ART* of the word might not be fully appreciated for many a year(100s, perhaps...teach your young ones to keep an eye on it). Truly historic. Comfort and condolences to all who are processing this most recent goodbye...
