32:50 the implication could either be bc if this is from mom’s pov she might not catch everything since he speaks fast and it’s her second language. Another is that he’s a child. Unfortunately many children are thrust into the responsibility of interpreter/translator but they lack the experience to gauge nuance and may not have the right words for the situation. The muddiness could be his imperfect interpretation of what the mom is trying to ask.

When you read "dad's anniversary" from the texts I assumed it was a death anniversary 😭. Kavin arguing with his mom about overpacking (smelly) food is so relatable lol. Being a 1st and 2nd gen immigrant is tough... to juggle assimilating and retaining cultural traditions simultaneously (I am a 2nd gen Viet American). Kavin coming around trying to reconnect to his roots is also relatable and where my cousins and I are at now in our adult lives with our aging parents.

😢 this hit home for me big time. I was effectively a single dad for about 6 years, and food was my love language, for both myself and children. Cooking is art, culture, family, expressions of love and care, and so much more.

This makes me think of my mom. My maternal grandmother was always so worried about standing out as an immigrant that she wouldn’t let my mom do certain things because she was worried that she would be targeted for them- but she also really struggled to assimilate. Every time my mom asked to be able to do the same thing as her peers, my grandmother would always dismiss the request and say: “that’s some American thing.” I think it was really hard for my mom not having a cultural anchor at home or at school.

My grandpa was the first of his Japanese family to be born on Brazil, almost 100 years ago. His name was supposed to be Yoshioka Noboro, last name Yoshioka, first name Naboro. When he was registered, they wrote Yoshioka Nabor (without the O), being Yoshioka the first name and Nabor the last. To add to the confusion, he also had the "social name" Roberto, not sure if it is written on his documents or not. No one ever called him Roberto, even if it is a "Brazilian name", everyone just called him Nabor, not because they know it was supposed to be his first name, but because it is easier to say. Anyway, his entire name is my dad's middle and last name M. Yoshioka Nabor, and Nabor bacame my last name S. T. Nabor. Even if it is spelled wrong, I still love my last name 😊

Funnily enough, I am sort of proud of my name. So the story goes, my parents weren't sure what to name me after I was born and they were going over a few options in the hospital. Christine came up as an option, and my grandfather claimed, "girls aren't smart enough to spell a name that long." Hi, my name is Christine. 😆

@@doggycatalan Grandpa was very much a man of his time, for sure. He did get better as his grandchildren grew, though. I remember him as a funny, strong, proud man until his last day, and I'm happy to have my name attached to him, even in a sort of dark comedic way 😁

A beautiful story! As a child of immigrant parents i can relate to this and it's true whether we grew up ashamed or not of our culture we really don't fully appreciate it and what it means to our parents until we are much older. To them it isn't just tradition it's what gives them their identity.

Totally got me, I still cry when I think of my mom's cooking. I always wanted for her to be here cooking with me and my kids. I only wish my daughters had the some of what my son was able to briefly experience....

Watching you play this made me cry, so i bought it to show my mexican mom. She moved to the us at 18 but she still felt so distant from us. Shes liked it so far.

Had to pre-watch this for the missus, just in case the sadness level was too high, but I think it's just the right level. Very moving game, rather eye-opening tbh. I've never had to consider this sort of situation beyond the theoretical, being a standard American--but my lady is from Latin America, and I've watched her struggle with the divide between the culture she knew and the one she's absorbing. It's fascinating to see this angle on the struggle someone faces when they move to another country, and the struggle of growing up between worlds. Thank you for playing this. It gives me some things to think about.

This game is a surprising emotional gem. It hit me hard as I lost almost my entire family. It's up to me now to be the roots for the ones that depend on me. Life captured in a short sweet game.

At the mention of moms getting cold food because they're busy making food for their kids, I was reminded of how when my mom makes pancakes, she'll make some for me and my brother with chocolate chips (she prefers her pancakes without) and ask us how many we think we'll eat. At the end she makes a giant pancake with all the batter left so her "mom pancake" is always hot for her to eat (dad always has cold pancakes because he doesn't want to stop whatever he's doing to come eat lol)

for the muddied speech bubbles - my take is that Venba has trouble understanding those phrases of english, they are more often more complicated phrases, the easier phrases - like thank you etc - are easier to understand for her

Oh my Dear Lord, I'm literally sobbing. I haven't seen my mom in over 13 years and it's not out of choice. I live in Canada and she in Syria. Every time I tell her that I want to visit her, she begs me to not to come because of the war in Syria. My heart is aching so much. I plan not to listen to her and just one day show up once I save enough money. There honestly is nothing more important that family to me. That is where home is.

Definitely. There's also an in-between when people just can't or won't pronounce it correctly. My confidence increased when I picked a name that people can pronounce and that I like, because I don't have to keep correcting people

It's interesting, I didn't get emotional watching this, but by the very end I actually stopped and had a long think. My mom is 1st gen, I'm 2nd South American...I honestly didn't connect food as a love/cultural language growing up, heck, even now it kinda just hit me. Now that I'm living a whole state away from my parents, and as I get older, I notice I converse with my mom about the foods I'm cooking a lot! LOL Just this evening I sent her a picture of something I made & she called me right away. We spent the rest of our convo doing little bits of catch up, but I'm amazed how much was food-related in retrospect. She talked about what she made & wanted to share the recipe. This, inadvertently has become part of our 'love language' to one another I've realized, and THAT is making me emotional now. 🥺Truly time passes so quickly the older you get, and tomorrow is never promised, so thanks for sharing this gameplay...it was a gentle reminder of love, cultural change over generations & how we are all just figuring it out the first time on this earth. xoxo

I assume they're from different castes? Please, anyone who knows more about this weigh in, but India has a caste system which - while there is action being taken to make things more equal - is pretty ingrained culturally.

I suspected when it was an Indian couple living in Canada it would be around Toronto. I briefly suspected Vancouver, but that tends to attract more east Asians, and Montreal takes all the French-speaking immigrants.

So when Kavin speaks English (the yellow text) the mum can’t understand fully and that’s why it’s muddy. When he speaks their native language (the white text) the mum can understand and it’s clear at least I think that’s how it goes

Even without any culture shock, the scene with my parents preparing me for university played out almost exactly the same for almost exactly the same reasons... Just all the smothering "trying to help" with my parents were setting me up to be isolated from all the other students at the dorms by making sure I had every possible appliance and supply stock in my dorm room in advance.

Yeah when you were reading back on the texts the mom said to the son it was his anniversary and to message what I assume wa the uncle. So sad and I'm not sure i want to know how he passed cause it would make it worse 😞

Pls listen to the message of the game. Appreciate your parents and family and the time you spend with them thought it may be often tough. Also, please don't be ashamed of your culture. People who don't mean well for you and who aren't true loving family are not worth listening to. Be careful who you listen to and what for. A lot of ppl won't even stay with you for the rest of your life

I understand Kavins whole thing about not correcting his friends pronunciation of his name cause as someone with a not so common where I’m from, Salimata (Saw-Lee-mah-tah) I’ve gotten Sally, Sully and even worse ones honestly. I usually go by Sali because it’s just quicker and easier to pronounce, that plus mata is sort of a common to additive to a name where my families from (ex. I have a sister named Fatoumata who we just call Fatou). But I remember once when I was introducing myself in a class in middle school, explaining that I prefer to go by Sali, my teacher went on a whole rant about excepting and embracing your culture and it made me so uncomfortable. Just because I prefer to go by a nickname doesn’t mean I’m trying to hide or don’t embrace my culture. This definitely isn’t exactly like Kavins situation because I believe he does try to hide his culture especially later on but at the beginning when he was younger, I felt it was more out of convenience. I also think that as nice as it is to retain your heritage and your real name sometimes it’s fun to choose another name yourself, I think once it becomes less of a “for fun thing” and more of a “disdain for your heritage thing” it’s bad.
