Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we dive into another exciting JoCat video, this time where we dive into the Tank role in Final Fantasy XIV. Tank is still the role that I am least familiar with, however having some time with Tank under my belt and watching others I've played with Tank I have much more context than I previously had. I found this both hilarious and insightful, and even more jazzed to Tank in my future Daily Roulettes. What are your thoughts on Tanks? Do you main a Tank? I absolutely loved this, and if you did as well then I do absolutely do recommend that you go and check out the original video to show some support for the source material!

Tanks have bullied me out of healing. I used to be a healer main but haven't played healer in over a year because I just can't take shitty tanks anymore. I'm tired of trying my best and then getting blamed for other peoples mistakes. Especially on Scholar.

I know this is a week late, but I will tell you as a player who always prefers being a tank/healer in most content... screw them. It's just as much the tank's job to recognize the party's limits and/or offer *helpful* advice as the run goes along. I wish I could do something to help with those experiences, but I'm just one in millions. However, I can tell you a little story. During some level 90 content, one of the DPS in the party was sprinting ahead of me in every pull. I attempted to match them, but they were pushing more than I allow time to ensure I have all aggro. After a point, I let that DPS go ahead and start doing pulls themselves, saying "I know [this class here] are tanks in other games, but you know they're not so here, right?" There was no response and the healer and I had an unspoken agreement to let them sweat before we stepped in. By the end of it, they said "I know the game is rated for teens, but you don't have to act like one, sweaty edge lord," and left. The rest of us just had a laughing fit with the healer sending me a friend request. So I implore you not to give up on healing. You'll find your people in unexpected ways.

As a healer it's always appreciated when the tank asks how fast they should pull before they start.

Sometimes, if you get a new healer, you need to maybe use the first pull to see if you need to go slow or trial by fire em. As for off tanking, the one that comes to mind for me was an Alex raid (the arm that HW relics farm), and after yhe first minute of the other tank being main tank, i turned on my stance to get second place aggro, just in case. Turns out i was right to, cuz like 15 secs later the main tank died and it went right to me, thus protecting my healers from autos and making me the main tank for the rest of the fight. Off tanking is a thing to be respected.

Something that doesn't get talked about enough is that a lot of times Tanks need to know the fights well enough to know in which direction to tank the bosses to minimize mechanics, control threat as well as knowing when to use Mitigation, especially in parts of the fights where the damage is *tight* and the healers are alredy running around like squirrels on crack lol

I will say, they have vastly improved the Dark Knight Invuln skill since JoCat made this video, but in his defense the 14 team had left it unchanged and lowkey bad for so long that everyone had kind of given up hope that it would ever be improved. Basically, how that invuln called Living Dead worked for the longest time is that upon activation you would have a short duration of time where you would survive an otherwise fatal attack or amount of damage. The draw back to this was that once you survived that damage, you would receive a debuff for the rest of the duration, and if you hadn't been healed to your full hp bar inbetween the survived attack and that debuff running out, you would die. They have since changed it so that when the debuff is activated you also get a status buff that gives you a large heal for every attack action you make until the debuff runs out, allowing you to (most of the time) pull of the necessary amount of healing to live. This has made Dark Knight much more accessible, and much less reliant on a good healer or a WHM's Benediction for their invuln to work without killing them. Meanwhile, the mitigation ability he mentioned as the best is called "The Blackest Night" and it's Dark Knight's level 70 capstone ability that since Endwalker dropped has arguably faced some competition for "Best Single Target Mitigation in the game". It has the shortest cooldown of any mitigation and gives you (or the main tank if you're off tanking, or the healer if they're about to get hit by a really strong mechanic or attack) a huge shield at the cost of 3000 MP, and if it breaks you get a free use of one of your 3000 MP cost attacks. Thing is, Endwalker gave decent defensive upgrades at lvl 82 to the other 3 tanks in the form of traits that upgrade an existing ability to a new form (instead of receiving an ability upgrade Dark Knight got a new separate mitigation ability at 82 that's...okay). Depending on whether you consider "self-healing"/"sustain" to be a type mitigation or not, Warrior's new 82+ evolution of "Raw Intuition" called "Bloodwhetting" can give "The Blackest Night" a run for it's money.

Slight correction on living dead: you don't need to be healed to full, you need to be healed for 100% of your hp. So if you take a massive hit, get healed halfway, take a second massive hit that knocks you back to 1, and then get healed halfway again, that counts, that will satisfy the living dead healing requirement. Most of the time it's not a meaningful distinction, but in certain savage fights that difference matters
@Rukdug

@zacharybierstedt1423 Huh, I had no clue about that. That's a pretty cool functionality. I don't really do Savage content often, so I'm always happy to have someone who does do it (or knows people who do) add their perspective. Thank you for sharing it 😊

Gunbreaker is not as hard as ppl say it is. it's dmg rotation fits together perfectly so you either nail it or you don't. in that way, once you learn it, it kinda feels like a high-apm summoner imo. the problem is that you can't mitigate dmg while bursting for those 20 or so seconds, and even outside the burst weaving mitigations kinda has to take second priority to keeping your dmg rotation lined up. very different from most other tanks.

As a tank main, when doing big pulls, I usually find taking the first group, do a AoE rotation so they are a lower HP, moving as I do so. Then go to the next groups and strays. Rampart at 2-3 groups (if DRK) or Bulwark (PLD) so as to make sure healer can focus partial dps and aoe heal if needed. But rule of thumb, you new to dungeon, raid, trial? Let the party know. If you are a new tank, go slow. Get a feel from that one group, and go from there.
@kirstenwyatt9675

Speed of pulls is a delicate balance between healer and tank. (Healer main) I have had tanks try to wall to wall, and everyone else was dying, so I just sat and waited. I play console, so I take a long time to type anything, so in the time it took me to type out "slow down, my healing can't keep pace" he had roared past, died, self rezed, 4 times.

I remember back when in 2.x (and a bit into 3.x) as a Cnj/Whm I'd occasionally get an unconfident tank that would ask me to initiate fights/lead dungeons, which was ok because this was before AoEs were common and CC was more of a thing (I think like it was mostly tanks, Blm, and then Brd at 47 that had AoEs before 50 then).

I’m a white mage main, I didn’t choose the job the job chose me. I do tank as well and in the low level dungeons I find the healer is the one that truly sets the pace. The worst healers throttle me to pulling one mob at a time, the best are pushing me to pull harder than wall to wall. I find the sweet spot to be between 2 to 3 mobs on average.

As a Console player, it can take me a couple minutes to type anything, so communication is almost impossible. As a healer main, tanks adjust to my speed 90% of the time. There are 2 dungeons that stand out that were bad experiences with tanks. In one, the tank was just verbally abusive the whole way, and the party just voted them out. The other kept trying to do wall to wall pulls, with a party of first timers. By the time I finally typed out "slow down, I can't heal fast enough" they had zoomed past, died, and respawned 4 times. Within seconds of hitting send, they left the dungeon, and the 2 dps and I finished without a tank.

I remember old living dead on DK, had one of the most epic extreme fights where entire party was KOed and I (the off tank DK) was the only one left, the enemy boss had 0.2% health and I knew the next attack would kill me, popped Living dead and just went ham, managed to kill the boss before my timer was up. Felt like such an anime badass, standing their triumphant clearly past the point of where I should be dead

0:10 tanking at the fundamental level is simple in concept “be there to take big’ol damage and agro” the skill comes in depending on what type of tank you want to be and the game your in as well as party make up if you like seeing big particle effects plink of your armored carapace and see insane damage numbers take slivers of your health bar standard tank is good but we have support tank dodge tank damage tank and my personal favorite sustain tank where life steal is the name of the game And I think it’s a fine mix of tank and healer in dungeon flow as a tank bro I like clearing one at a time but if the healer wants me to move it to improve efficiency or slow it down to get rotations in order or learn their class I can’t be too mouthy cause even the best tanks can’t tank a raid boss forever
@axxura5286
@axxura5286 4 месяца назад
when i tank while lvling i pull the first group and scoop out what kind of healer i got if i don't get a single heal during that entire pull cause they are dpsing and know I'm not gonna die to 3 mobs we good to pull the whole room, btw don't make large pulls if they're spam healing you at 90% that may seem like a good way to survive a big pull but it isn't cause they will run out of mana and you will run out of mitigations before they get enough mana back.

Honestly, Tanking was an easy choice for me. I wanted someone who could take abuse, and dish it back, so Warrior fit like a glove. It kinda bothers my friends, not because I'm a bad Tank, but it's ALL I play and they want a turn to Tank. So I gotta try and level up a DPS. The only classes I like so far are Warrior, Dark Knight, Machinist, and Samurai.
@Varentill

I tank & dps, and nothing is more frustrating to me, when I'm on dps, than when you get a tank who thinks that the size of the pull is proportional to their dick size. I can't tell you how many times, and it always seems to be in the Darkhold for some Hydaelyn damned reason, where I will get a Tank who, without checking with the party at all, just pulls literally everything all at once, & gets the party wiped. Folks like that are why, when I'm tanking, I'll usually pull no more than 2-3 mobs at once.

Dunno if you know this, but Jo is in the process of finishing every project hes working on and plans to then cease production of online material indefinitely. He's essentially been bullied off of every platform because people saw his fun cover of "boys" called "girls" and immediatley assumed he was the worst person to ever exist and started making death threats against him and his family. There's not really anything anyone can do about it; Jo is doing what he feels is right to protect his family, but it's a situation i feel needs to be discussed more.

I think there are a variety of reasons why the ff14 community is less toxic than most other mmo's. Some can be summed up in one scenario. You happen upon a cute girl with cat ears wearing a slick but sexy suit and rocking a UwU name, advertising high quality equipment over chat. In many an mmo, that person might get harassed and bullied for being a weaboo furry and trying to scam people. In ff14, anyone worth their salt will assume that they are a glamer/omnicrafter who casually solo's endgame bosses for fun, and leave them be.

I will say this. A tank _SHOULD_ control the flow and speed of a dungeon run. Unless you have asshole DPS or healers who are impatient with a slower tank and run ahead to grab more stuff and run it back to the tank. Generally, people will be accomodating of people who are not yet comfortable with larger pulls, and will slow down. But there are those people whose time is more important than your existence, and _god help you_ if you cause them to take longer than five minutes in this dungeon run. No, I haven't had this happen to me far too many times, why do you ask?
