as a I.T. security professional for more than 9yrs now, I suggest and recommend that IAM is the most chill I.T. security role/job in our industry... if you listened to this man he already mentioned the things they do each day.... "add, edit and delete", giving access, removing access, edit access, etc. also when a company is downsizing the IAM team are one of the last team to be rolled off.

100%. I’m a DevOps Engineer and one of my tasks is IAM. Adding, editing, and removing access in AWS, Active Directory, BitBucket, and Jenkins. I work mostly with Developers providing/removing access to resources. So easy.

AD is not that bad and scary as it sounds. If you have time and the resources to spin up an AD enviroment go for it!!! Make sure you talk about it when applying for jobs.. it will go far!

Appreciate sharing this experience. I'm currently studying with extensive online courses specializing in help desk skills, namely active directory, and studying for CompTIA a+ cert. Changing career paths from construction into the tech field and now may focus on any other IAM skillsets to compliment the help desk skills. I'm thoroughly enjoying how much I'm learning and love how encouraging all you folks in the tech field are. Thank you all

Great interview and content and great advice on the best skills to learn a job - technical skills and soft skills. The ability to communicate effectively is important for any job and that included IT jobs. My 2 cents for anyone looking to get involved with AWS, Azure, GCP and other cloud based positions is to get some hands on training with IAM. IAM is the glue that binds and enables services and resources deployed in the cloud to work together. As a simple example you can deploy a database and web server in a cloud infra but what allows the web server to communicate with with the database are the identities, roles and policies (all configured under IAM) assigned to the services to enable the communications.

IT Governance is one of the most crucial elements of any successful security program. You cant keep people accountable if identities are not maintained and appropriately monitored. For instance, If you let someone use your computer login on a company computer, thats not a good idea. Then theres the possibility of denying responsibility of actions taken benign or otherwise.

Hmm, 25 years ago the HR department would create a user on their system which would include a title, department, shift, office number, etc. The IT overlord software would detect the change, create the user in the company directory, throw said user into the appropriate groups, roles, and organizations based on the info from HR software. That would connect and assign the telephone in the user's office, give permissions to the user's badge to enter his/her building and office, give permissions to login to all the permitted systems only during their shift on PCs assigned to that user, print on printers allowed for the user and his/her groups and create email accounts. When HR terminated a user, all that was done automatically as well, while never contacting the IT department. Now 25 years in the future that doesn't work anymore? Is their some way to automate this in AWS?

There is but normaly it involves costly software and it normaly breaks... its cheaper and easier to pay someone to manage it.

Advice!!? I just got a summer internship with RTX(Raytheon Technologies) as a cyber defense analyst working in Identity management. I graduate with a bachelors in Cybersecurity in august and will be going to graduate school in the fall for MS-Management Information Systems. This is my first job in IT and would love some advice on recommendations to best prepare? I do have compTIA sec + cert and I am familiar with Active directory, Powershell and scripting languages.

It really depends on where you're at in your career. If you have absolutely no experience and aren't working in the field currently, you need to get an entry level job and work on certifications like the a+

@@TheBeardedITDad What about a Customer Success Manager that in addition to many other responsibilities was the main person tasked with managing the authentication side of new user accounts for a new product launch (using systems like Google firebase) ? Unlike CSM's and other lucrative tech sales roles, IAM doesn't seem to be oversaturated so how would you recommend someone with my experience to get into IAM? Any specific area of IAM I should target, certifications etc. Thanks.

What’s up I’m new to your channel and I really like this video and it help me a lot, I’m currently in my IT Field as an Tech Administrator but my boss won’t teach me any further possibility on being afraid that I’d take his job or etc. as the IT Director that he’s waited 12 years for and I’m stuck in my position potentially maybe get replaced. I want to journey my skills and potential further and I learn fairly quickly and I networked at my other job and came across a customer that has the same degree and everything just like me works from home as a IAM Manager and just recently he sent me the job as a IAM Analyst and I supposed to get a call tomorrow, a possible 20min interview. I really want the job and figured you could help me or prep me for possible interview questions and things to say to better my chances because to be honest I have no clue on this and I just started studying and researching IAM and the role for it Wednesday. Do you think you can help me out brother?…

absolutely.. what questions do you have.. my biggest advice is dont try to know it all ... no one in this field is expected to know everything but what an employer wants to know is how you would trouble shoot the problems and find the information you need... also dont lie in your interview, be honest and truthful.. trust goes a long way.. remember your people skills are the most important still in this field hands down... if you have good people and communication skills all the other things can be taught on the job..

Ok my responsibilities would be *SAP Access Provisioning/Deprovisioning *SAP User Access Review Facilitation *Active Directory *SAP Security/Basic SAP Knowledge *ServiceNow/Jira Experience *O365 & Soft skills *Okra/Application Intergration *Brightree userAccess Review Facilitation I’m nervous and really want the job it will be a life changer for me if I get it I was just needing guidance with this so tomorrow I can seem like I know a little of what I’m talking about and potentially can get the job trust is a big thing for me as well but telling the truth hasn’t been getting me jobs I was told to fake it till you make it and it works for most ppl I’m staying up studying all night so if you could or would be able to help me I’d really appreciate it thanks brother 💪💪

Microsoft has the SC-300 and AZ-500 which I believe deals a lot with IAM. However, IAM is apart nearly all cyber security certs like CompTIA S+ and all the intermediate certs. But you don't really need certs you just need to gain some experience how AD/Entra ID works and you can do that through home labs like setting up your own domain controller in a VM if you don't have the money but remember there are elements that you cannot truly replicate virtually. Entra ID, you can do some cloud labs (GPS RU-vid channel by Gwyneth -- she has a lot of Microsoft cloud info. She's very helpful, too.)

@@nlibby5549 I work as an IAM Analyst. I dont take a lot of calls, maybe have a couple long meetings in a day. It can get noisy sometimes if its busy part of the year. Thats most likey when you get some calls but overall its pretty chill and you dont really take calls

@@nlibby5549 Whats your job title? You could have a role that has other things other than IAM. I had two IAM jobs so far and they were all pretty low on the calls. Emails were okay as well. My current pay is about $80k a year and I work from home.

@@nlibby5549 No you are not doing IAM work. Job title matters. I dont think you know what you go yourself into when you accepted that role. Does not sound like IAM. You are doing IT Helpdesk. That is teir 1 work. IAM is not helpdesk or teir 1 work. So that tells me you do not work at in IAM.

You do realize that these tasks are not unique only to IAM right? What you have basically broke down is explaining even more how you are working more in a helpdesk role. Not IAM role.
