Thank You ! 🥰.. As a East Londoner I get so annoyed when I hear people Moan/Whinge/Complain about London & our Island is " finished ". We have our issues like every other nation and yet we only need jump on a bus/train/drive for 30mns and long gone is the concrete jungle and misery guts attitude as you enter countryside & market towns/villages of the Britain we love. The natural beauty is breath taking and has been a destination for us as a family for over 30yrs that most Sunday's we go for a drive to the coast or find a Sunday lunch in a beauty spot. We always forget how lucky we are to have such beauty and history at our finger tips if we only just reach out and want to touch it.

You must have your head in the sand if you think they will stay lovely little towns and villages, they are slowly going . I live in a market town and it’s looking a bit like Africa believe what you like but it is finished because of people with your train of thought 🙃

@hiramabiff2017 True! Sadly, much of this was due to a conscious effort to push industrial grime and nasty manufacturing up North, so not to disturb the pleasantries of London and the South East. Just sweep that lot under the carpet and no-one will realise :( Further, no-one "down south" seems to realise the withdrawal of said industry from the 80s (all happening out of sight) wrought social and economic devastation. Industries which, over the 40 odd following years, have been replaced by.... nothing. I do wonder how the the UK (outside of London) creates wealth; seemingly it does not. It is all a great pity.

Seconded. I'm lucky enough to have essentially 'discovered' the South Coast - and much of the countryside - in the last half century, so can't understand why it's assumed London (and suburbs) are routinely presented as beseiged gated communities in the USA... thanks GGL!

@@SammyTheCat_No1 Most of the anti London posts on RU-vid are from bloggers outside of London. It makes them feel good rubbishing London to take their minds off the crap hole they live in themselves. Big pro Palestinian march last weekend and a massive police presence and a shitty atmosphere where we live in Hackney on the edge of the City. Just 2 hrs later we were having a early dinner in a little village pub along the great river Ouse in Hillgay Norfolk. Can you imagine how happy I was driving back into London and spending 5hrs in traffic because of the marches. lol

As an ex- Brit, to people who have already done the London thing, I always recommend the London to Portsmouth route. With a big natural harbour, it has been a very important and popular port. As such it was one of the most important and heavily used roads in the country. The old road has been replaced by the A3, but still exists. More usefully, the rail line that joins the two cities is extremely well served. It runs through a series of towns and villages, some like Guildford are big county towns, while smaller villages like Godalming and Chiddingfold also have little stations. Most of these towns date back millennia, but with the development of sailing they became important for people travelling to and from London and Portsmouth. There are numerous coachhouses and inns, where everyone from Elizabeth 1 and Peter the Great stayed, there are also areas outside some of these inns where prisoners being transported to Australia were chained over night. Guildford has the remains of a Norman castle, - which is close to Lewis Carroll's old home (writer of Alice in Wonderland) - it also has a cobbled high street and buildings of many styles - in fact while a lot of the high street has a Georgian appearance, many are just facades attached to the front of Tudor buildings. Godalming is considered one of the best towns in the country to live in, lots of half timbered shops and houses, a significant coachhouse and tucked away on one side of the town is a rather impressive memorial to Jack Philips, a one time national hero. I believe the memorial was paid for with national donations? He was the 25yr old radio operator who stayed at his post calling for help as the Titanic sunk. Surrounding the towns is some beautiful countyside, which along with its easy access to London has made it the home of the rich and famous for a long time. Portsmouth itself is still home to the British fleet and has several attractions like the Mary Rose, and the Victory there and open to the public. Another useful thing on the route are the trains which vary their stops, from Waterloo you can chose express trains which only stop at one or two stops, or slow trains that stop everywhere. It means you can take in a couple of smaller towns in a day, then when you’re tired, grab an express and be back at Waterloo in about 35 minutes from Guildford. I also suggest that people don’t get back to Waterloo and head straight for the tube! Especially if you are headed to north london. Walk from the station across one of the bridges. Westminster Bridge takes you right across to the houses of parliament and Waterloo Bridge has some of the best views of the city, including the buildings in the financial district and St Paul’s.

@@GirlGoneLondonofficial you’re welcome, there are other routes which have historical connections - the road to Canterbury for example, but I don’t think that that is served so well by train, there’s a video on RU-vid about the ten prettiest towns/villages in Surrey, the train stops in most of them, with a spur line stopping at more
@StephenWestrip
@StephenWestrip День назад
You can also take the Southern train from London to Portsmouth Harbour and that takes a different route which includes my home town, Horsham - a historic market town and Arundel with its castle to name just two. Plenty of stops at interesting towns to investigate.
@adrianmcgrath1984
@adrianmcgrath1984 День назад
I’ve done that line lots of times in the past - even into the mid-‘70s it used to have some very old rolling stock, the carriages were completely divided into individual pairs of seats. Two rows of seats facing each other and a door for each pair. No corridor or central aisle. It was quaint, but potentially very dangerous - especially for women. I even did that trip once in the engine - I just asked the driver at Waterloo one evening and he was happy to oblige. There are smaller towns which are pretty along that route, but I don’t remember which are served by that rail line? I think it goes through Horsley and Clandon, but Abinger Hammer, Gomshall and other places used to be nice too - and Newlands Corner of course.

I used to live just down the road, tiny village called Little Kingshill, outside High Wycombe, and in Woodburn Green again outsde High Wycombe. Its a very beautiful area with many tiny villages and towns. The countryside is incredible and i spent endless hours walking through it, enjoying the fresh air and just sitting on top of the Chiltern Hills watching the World go by.... i still live in a similar place its just further away from London along the M40. Country life is lived at a far slower pace, without the hustle and bustle of a modern day large town or city. Its incredibly peaceful and no amount of money could make me leave here to live in a concrete jungle.

We'd often do a short concert at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and stay to play games with our age-mate patients. We took the Tube all the way, just changing once. Hi Kaylyn, Great Missenden is lovey I went to school there many years ago, and now live in Aylesbury a few stations away. You might want to travel to Wendover the next station on the line which is slightly larger but full of charm too, from Wendover you can walk up to Coombe Hill the highest point in the area with fantastic views across Aylesbury Vale and also see Chequers the Prime Minister country house. There are some great walks from here, I tend to explore this area too doing trail runs or Wendover Woods park run which is close too but very hilly. Good to see you taking an interest in Model Railways another of my hobbies. David

London Calling: The UK generally has a good rail system, however, the ticket pricing system is borderline unfathomable. The simplest way around this is to just buy a standard off peak return ticket (mostly travel after 9.30am weekdays and all day weekends). These tickets allow you get off the train at any one station on route to your specified destination and then board the next onward bound train so you can take in multiple destinations with one ticket. This is not the cheapest way of traveling by rail in the UK but it’s flexible and in my opinion worth the small extra cost.

Hi GGL, I am enjoying your style and content. I noticed that one of your recent vlogs included a view from the Chilterns-Watlington Hill. You might have noticed west-ish around 5miles away some large buildings and a pale strip to the left. This is Chalgrove Airfield and one of its three runways. A 'Chalgrove Airfield' search will reveal that it was opened in 1943 and became Station 465 for the United States Army Air Force. Obviously if we tried to build this today the planning arguments would have taken a decade or two and then it would have been cancelled part way through construction but I digress. Chalgrove was one of three local air bases providing photo reconnaisence services, the others being Benson (opened 1939) and Mount Farm (USAAF) from 1943 home to Eighth Air Force as a photo reconnaissance station designation Station 234. A bit of research will reveal that this was an intense time for vital information gathering up to and after D-day. RAF Benson is still an active base, Chalgrove is operational for the Martin Baker company of ejector seat fame and Mount farm is now a smudge on the landscape but there is a memorial on the way into Berinsfield. These bases provide an example of American inolvement in WW2 and not neccessarily well known as the work and aircraft used were largely secret. I hope this might be of interest, Martin.

@GirlGoneLondonofficial. I love Great Missenden. It is a great find If you want some other tips for places near London, but a bit further north. Maybe try Ampthill and some of the villages around there. Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire have some real treasures I think you would like.

Definitely a nice place for a day out,I’ve been a few times over the years.. I’m lucky enough to live in a small village (Shere)near Guildford and that’s also good for a visit if you’re heading out to the Surrey Hills for the day.👍

Ayyy I live really close to Great Missenden, when I was younger there was a Christian activity group that a lot of my friends went to called light house. Also one time I went to the village for a walk with my dad and a hot air balloon with a tear had a (safe) crash landing in the field as we were parking.

Hi Kalyn, Great overview of an interesting topic ..... the Big and the Small of SE England, and how they co-exist. Love your research investment to make this so enjoyable. Speaking of research, it looked like your interest might be piqued by 'collecting'. I am Irish, but have always been aware of the English fondnss for collecting. I'd be interested where that had moved on rhe social media age. Maybe traon spotting and stamp collecting are no longer as big, but what about model railway enthusiasts, or even things very modern that I don't yet imagine 😊

Yay! welcome to Bucks, my home county. i've lived around Missenden most of my life - Wycombe, Chesham, Gt Hivings and Hundridge. it really is a beautiful area during the summer and as you noticed, there are plenty of public footpaths that criss cross in all directions. you can walk very easily from Wycombe to Aylesbury, though it would take quite a while. if you haven't already, i would suggest a trip to Berkhamsted and/or Tring - slightly to the north and across the border in Hertfordshire. also Combe Hill near Wendover - you get an amazing view of the Vale of Aylesbury from the top.

Thank you for an engaging walk around. I like the idea of you visiting various places to cast your observations over them, it needs your opinions as well as the normal guidebook text. Why not vary it a bit by visiting the not so quaint places. I would be interested in your take on Milton Keynes for example, that is an English expression of American town planning. MK is only 34min from Euston but a world away from the history and sprawl of London.

It's wild just how many enclaves in London itself are very leafy and villagey. Southgate, Hampstead and Highgate are of course London and have masses of history, but don't feel like London to me. Wimbledon Village too feels more countryside than city, in fact, some of the pedestrian crossings there have been modified for horse riders (there is an additional button higher up the post for people on horse back so they don't have to dismount).

A large majority of the towns on the commuter belt. Within an hours ride or drive from London are now predominantly resided by ex Londoners, a lot of them were once evacuated children from the second world war. They decided to go and live in the safe rural shire market towns to which they were evacuated and cared for by new families. Alas it wasn't all rosey and milk and honey for every child evacuated. Some had a miserable time and were abused used as slaves. And a lot of people coming back to live in the wealthier parts of London are blissfully aware that they via their grandparents are actually Londoners, come home to roost. You can still find villages a lot closer to London and even within London.

Commonwealth War Graves - that has to be a topic with Armistice Day (11 November) and Remembrance Sunday (second Sunday in November) approaching. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission's headquarters is in Maidenhead. For those interested in Roald Dahl, the 1990 film of The Witches was partly filmed on location in a village just north of Maidenhead.

Kalyn, dear girl (if I may be so bold)...if you're promoting a product, my understanding is that a video should flag 'paid promotion' on the screen. Frankly, as soon as a channeler starts doing their pitch, I skip over that until they're experiencing again whatever they're experiencing. Kind of see these recent views of the countryside as a new departure for you - a change from you sitting in front of a camera at home. Interesting. Robert, uk.

What is it about the American habit of referring to "vines" everywhere in the countryside or covering old houses / cottages etc?!! We call it _IVY_ and there are different types, such as the variegated type which has darker and lighter green foliage within the same leaf. ... I know you have (& don't like?) "poison ivy" in the US, but we have "stinging nettles" which have "hairy" leaves and it's the fine hair-like leaf coverings which cause the intense stinging felt if you brush up against them with bare skin, if wearing shorts, shirt dresses, short-sleeved shirts etc... The stinging sensation can be eased by rubbing the stung skin with dock leaves - which usually - and fortunately - grows near to wherever stinging nettles grow - which is usually in rough, untended ground, such as waste grounds, neglected gardens, or in woodlands etc, often close to pathways and tracks, where they can catch passersby unawares!! However, from what I've heard of "poison ivy" it's _much worse_ than 'stinging nettles', so if prepared, and if stung you use a dock leaf to soothe the stinging sensation, after which, you can generally recover quite quickly, and should know next time you're out and about anywhere the nettles grow (and they are quick grown plants which soon spread to large areas unless kept under control) to avoid touching them...though, apparently if clean, cooked or served in a salad, (or a soup) they are quite nutritious - although, I cannot vouch for the validity of nettle soup or nettle salad being as nice as these "recipes" indicate!! _Ivy_ however, does not sting, or cause health problems, though I don't think they're edible - unlike nettles, apparently! Ivy does sometimes cause damage to brickwork, however as it finds it's way into any cracks in the bricks or the pointing, and may then let water in which will cause problems of a different kind... I'm no gardener*, so invite others who know better to correct any errors I may have made here... ...Though I do have a sprig of Ivy* growing through the air-vent in my bedroom wall!! (I call it my pet Triffid!!😮)
