Remember being in Phuket in the mid 1980's. Just a few dusty streets, great bars and an empty beach. Shame these places become overcooked. Too many people on this planet now :o(

2:15 Used to be able to book Expat for $35 to $50 USD a night during peak season. My last two trips January 2019/2020 rooms at Expat were in the 60 to 80 USD range. Was able to book 5 nights at nearby Yorkshire for just $33 USD per night.

But the thing that kills th now are not high prices but demographics. First time I got there, the thai average age was below 22, now over 38.

I was in Phuket in Dec. 1979. It was a small town then, no big hotels. Rented a hut on the beach for 20 BHT a day. The last time I visited Thailand was in 1980.

The bike taxis at the top and bottom of Soi Bangla won't budge on 100 baht minimum. Most others will still do 50-60 baht if you can speak a little Thai for short trips within Patong.

If you are around Sukhumvit soi 5 in Bangkok you have to try breakfast at Foodland. In the early hours it is only 69 baht (after 9am 89?) and the coffee is excellent.

We had a really good holiday there 20years ago; A Green Thai Curry and a cold Singha would go down well, right now; We went on to PhiPhi Thai massage on the beach daily!

Just what is the timeline with fixing the wiring in these cities? Looks to me like fixing them is simply adding tons of added lines. Friends there tell me it's often or most often illegal taps into the electrical system and the government wants them put underground.

I don't get the rain in Feb. I have gone a 100 times between Dec 5, after the King's Cut, and March and I don't think I have ever seen it rain. If I go before US Thanksgiving or at Spring Break, it always rains.

The last time I was at Patong beach was around 1981 and it was nothing like this! There was one "proper" hotel and a number of straw huts to rent on the beach and empty beaches, how things change and not for the better!
