A Day in South America’s “Most Humane” Prison

Prisons in Latin America have the reputation of being the most violent and dangerous in the world; overcrowded concrete spaces where corruption, gangs, and drug cartels reign. By contrast, Punta de Rieles offers a different reality. Located in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, it's known as "the prison from which nobody wants to escape".
The almost 100-acre property features ample outdoor space where inmates can live, work, do yoga, have pets, and play music. Here, the focus is on helping prisoners re-acclimate to society before they've even left confinement. VICE en Español spent the day at Punta de Rieles, talking to inmates and learning about Uruguay's progressive "open" prison.

Yall act like all prisoners are murders and rapists and not low level or non-violent offenders who are probably working class people who had to turn to stealing to survive. This prison is about rehabilitation so that when they leave, they have new skills that allow them to contribute to society. American prisons could learn a thing or two from this. Oh wait, prisons are privately owned and they want prisoners to return and perform more slave labor...
@saddvamp22
@saddvamp22 5 лет назад
I'm American. I 100% agree with this. We have a shit jail/prison system.. It's the most populated in the entire world.. Which is fucking terrible...We do need a major reform in it soo bad it's not funny.. Yea private prisons shouldn't even be a thing at all, But it's not all privately owned btw. We have a branch of them, it's County jails, city jails, state prisons(minimum and maximum security), federal penitentiaries(minimum and Max security mostly Max security), and then you have the "privately owned prisons" (minimum and Max)

We also have a wayyyyy more violent prison population though. These kinds of prisons work really well in Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, and American states like Maine and New Hampshire but they do not work in diverse areas or in places where the violent crime is extreme and follows little rhyme or reason. You can't reason with some people and this type of "rehabilitation" wouldn't work with the number of mentally ill and violent prisoners the US prison system deals with. It is said that the prisons double as psych wards and that is true. Low level offenders would benefit greatly from this kind of thing but not extreme individuals; at that point it's more about containment than rehabilitation.

Uruguayans, and Argentinians for that matter, are mostly either of Spanish and Italian descent, with some numbers of French, Germans, Jews, Armenians, etc. Both countries culture are heavily influenced of that of the Europeans, creating that European atmosphere as you mentioned from the cuisine, to the lifestyle, even the way we speak has been referred as Spanish spoken with an Italian accent (Rioplatense Spanish).

This is what is done in Sweden, Finland and many other countries and their recidivism rates are very low!! Teach them that they matter, show them they aren't animals and that they can succeed and they will.. They can learn to have empathy for people and not want to harm them when they are back out on the streets.. It works in the US when you give low level offenders jobs with animals.. The recidivism rate drops by over half!
@leelialeismann9664
@leelialeismann9664 5 лет назад
Swnsasy _ what about the people they have murdered, the families that have lost their kids,wives, fathers? What about their heartbreak and desperation that they are left to live with every day? Prisons are meant to be a punishment for ones actions not some wellness spa centres. When you take someones life hurting people -you loose the right to human rights as well. I can see this kind of program working only with some minor thieves. When you start to treat murderers and rapist like this you will have a street full of people who will murder rape and kill everybody because they know a good life awaits them inside.
@Swnsasy

Michigan's prisons are privatized and of all the states in this country Michigan also has more prisons than any other state in the country and we keep building more and keep filling them up with with non violent offenders. You have to be doing 3 plus years or have a life sentence to eligible for any kind of class. So if you want to get certified or get an associate's degree in culinary arts or get certified as a dental hygienist, technician or make eyeglasses you have to be doing at the minimum at least 3 years to even be eligible to sign up for classes but you'll finish your sentence before you even get out of prison. The people that need those classes cant get them because they're not doing enough time. The people going to those classes will never be able to utilize them and the one's that could utilize them get released to the same shit that got them there in the first place. The whole prison system is fucking insane and needs an overhaul.

It's a fantastic idea for individuals who commit crimes that are on the lesser side of the spectrum. But think about it, anyone who is on death row for committing murder or raping a woman is most likely going to take advantage of the opportunities he/she has there and escape to do more damage. Great idea overall though.

This would work for about 60 percent of inmates and the other 40 percent would take advantage of it.

I served over 4 years when I was 23 year old got out when I was 27, I never been in trouble before and it was just crazy night where I had a fight and something bad ended up happening which I regretted as soon as it happend. Throughout my experience of prison I was shocked by the mentality of the system it’s so obvious they set people up to fail to make them come back for profit reason than rehabilitate, this is the case so what’s the point in prison in the first place when all your doing is making a problem worse, by the time I was released I was extremely hardened to a differnent way life the way I acted the things I was doing which I saw as no problem because I’ve been watching people getting stabbed for years but to people who havnt been inside you look like a crazy man, it took me over a year to feel normal again prisons will not and don’t work unless the whole system is set up to better life’s not ruin them

Not sure how old you are but I can tell you that things were very bad in the mid 80s when the dictatorship ended, there was a lot more poverty and people living in cantegriles and corruption. Things seem better now but I don’t live there, I was only born there and visit my family there, every five years or so.

People forget prisoners are humans too and if you give them options to study, learn and work they will grow into better people instead of joining gangs and doing further violence.

Most of the people watching this video were obviously reading the subtitles because they don’t speak the language spoken in this video. These kind of videos should be made in English because most viewers are from the U.S.A and mostly speak English. Not hating, just a suggestion. Edit: I’m not talking about the people of this country in the video, I’m talking about the narrators speaking to speak in English.
