Join me in "a day in the life as a BIM engineer" at Katerra, Scottsdale, Arizona. My scope of work is very different from software engineers and any other engineers in the world.
Katerra is considered a tech startup company that aims to streamline construction through automation. We build homes faster, cheaper, and better quality! Pretty mind boggling right?! I'm really glad to be a part of this experience with a company revolutionizing the construction industry! Hope you got something out of this!
Let me know your questions and comments, I'll be happy to answer them.
Hope you have a great day,
Trey
And, Subscribe! More to come.

I can see my future in BIM and feels like interesting. But still, I am also interested in structural Engineering. As a fresh graduate , I am still confused to choose my career path. Could you please give me some advices as a senior?

If you want to sitting behind computers all day choose BIM and if you want to do back and forth between field and office choose structural.

Hey Trey, Great vid! I am a construction management major and two of my courses are using CAD/BIM software's to develop drawings/designs. The curriculum is heavy on more of the civil engineering/construction management stuff, but I definitely see myself more as a designer/architect. Sadly, the school does not have architecture as a degree of choice. How would one go about going into BIM engineering in the case that I am in?
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 6 лет назад
Tanner Barcelos Hey Tanner sorry for not getting back to you sooner! Been really busy recently. To answer your question, I actually graduated with a construction management degree. Had taken classes that taught Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD. I would say as long as you are construction related,and have an interest in BIM, you could easily apply for a BIM engineering position. Hope that helps!

Trey Tan no worries man! I appreciate the reply. It is definitely something that interests me. I’m much more of an architect type of person. And designingtype of guy. So I’ll definitely consider it!
@TreyTan

Tanner Barcelos just fyi, another way to get into BIM is to get Revit/Navisworks certification. From there you should be good to go. I know of some people who worked as construction labor and got their certifications. They then went straight to being a BIM Engineer. Anything is possible if you work hard for it.

What's the role of mechanical engineers in bim ?? As I'm mechanical engineering student, I got an offer for Bim trainee...so, please tell me more abt that
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply, been busy. Basically ME in BIM are in charge of creating Mechanical Equipment Models. We call them Revit "Families". These models are used to perform clash detection to make sure your EQ is not clashing against a plumbing pipe or etc. There's a lot more to it but this is basically what a ME would do in BIM.

Hi Trey, I am very interested in Katerra. As a BIM manager, is your responsibility also using Naviswork to coordinate with different disciplines? Are you more like on the contractor side? Thank you for sharing your cool experience!
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 5 лет назад
Hi Oliver, yes we use Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, BIM 360. To be honest we are pretty versatile. I started doing work on the contractor side but recently moved over to design + engineering. Katerra is a tech company with every discipline from design all the way to construction. Feel free to apply, maybe you might find a position you like! :)

That's great! Learning these skills when you are young will give you a headstart in the industry. Yes Navisworks is needed for clash detection. Or you can use BIM Track.

Hii Trey , Why you left your bim engineer job? I'm thinking to learn and make career in BIM. Is BIM is good choice as a career?
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 4 года назад
Hello Rajanikant, I left because I wanted to take a gap year and pursue what I love: photography and music while helping my parents with their small business. I might get back to BIM after the business starts to pick up. Yes, it is a good career because BIM is the future and it will shape the way construction is done in the entire world. Good luck and I wish you all the best!

Trey Tan guessing your still using view points.... BIM Track is amazing tho y’all should definitely use it. But do you all use laser scanning?
@TreyTan

@@LilOBX Correct. Our company bought over a local surveying company that does the laser scanning. Then we input into our platform to create a 3D pointcloud system for overlays in Revit.

I might just have to create a tutorial on this haha. But yes, Eduardo is right. Revit is a good start. Then move on to Navisworks/AutoCAD when you're more familiar with Revit.
