Is BIM the future of Engineering, as integrating BIM into your engineering workflow you are able to save time, reduce copy and paste errors and assess the impact of changes quickly? BIM explained in simple terms by answering questions like
What is BIM(Building Information Modelling)?
What is IFC(information Foundation Classes)?
and how to integrate BIM into your engineering workflows.
BIM explained in simple terms
BIM or Building Information Modelling is not a specific program but more a methodology on how to but your engineering models together, with Information being front and centre; And everything we do as engineers has some form of information manipulation in the heart of it, so as engineering we are able to leverage the information in the models to integrate with our designs

BIM is the future. It's a bit of an investment up front, in terms of the software, skill development and time, but it pays for itself over and over. A properly set up structural model saves so much time in the long run, and it's way more fun than just "drawing" a structure. You end up with a higher quality product with so much information at your fingertips. Thanks for a very informative video, looking forward to see more on this topic as it's a fast-moving technology and we need to adopt and adapt it efficiently as Structural Engineers.

Hi Theuns, agree the initial setting up the model can be costly, but after you have put the effort into setting up the model you can quickly update and assess change to the design.

Just found your channel - this is sweet! I get questions all the time asking who I can suggest for structural engineering and BIM, you just shot right up the top of my list. Keep up the great work mate. This video was also a great summary of BIM and engineering, I'm also including it in my 'further learning' for my University class I run on BIM. My background is architectural, so this video is super valuable to fill some of the gaps I'll no doubt leave for them.

Hi Aussie BIM Guru, Thanks for watching, enjoying and your support. your channel looks great too. If there are any topics that you think would be beneficial for me to cover let me know? I am always looking to add value to the community. What is the University course that your run? that sounds amazing. Also, thanks for adding it to your recommended 'further learning'.

@@BrendanHasty i currently run a capatone unit in BIM at USyd. Its a 5 day intensive divided across the semester, mixture of lab and lecture content. Whilst most of the students are architects I've added a lecture on engineering and analysis software (found some great examples in your video on structural top 5 software). I try to not make it too revit centric (even though we do use it here and there in lab sessions), and try to expose them to workflows and processes (iso standards, openBIM, CAFM etc). Quite bit to jam pick in! I still need to work my way through all your content, but I quite a lot of people asking about computation in structural engineering (analytical as well as automation based, e.g. karamba/dynamo) and also a lot of people are curious about modelling of reinforcement and analysis of slab deflection/loads. Might be some ideas in that mix of topics maybe? It's great how you tie back all your software examples to real practice, so tieing some of the 'why' to the 'how/what' with softwarr workflowd is super valuable for viewers also.

Hi Desire, thanks for your support. It depends on which side you want to start to tackle BIM from design or documentation. Also, best to start with programs at your company. For design look into way to manipulate data so with excel with VBA or python script, for documents Revit with dynamo

Hi Jason, depend on how detailed you need to go. If only standard detail revit with purpose build components would work well, big needing more shop drawing level documentation Tekla works better.

Autodesk is the dominant power they control adding features to bim software like rivet But it is clear that they will not let autocad_ the flagship software_with its _gigantic market share_ down That is why for structural engineers not to fully convert to rivet

Hey I would like to know more deeply, about programing ( machine learning, parametric or visual programing etc...) in structural engineering , for example Dynamo and Revit or even python with Revit, the use of grasshopper ( the visual programing tool ) with rhinozeros to create complex geometry to use in ETABS or SAP 2000 , machine learning in structural engineering , you know the kind of stuff that will rule the future in our field ( the latest developments ) thanks
