In this video, I am giving you an introduction for a day in the life of a help desk technician. In this specific IT Help Desk Support example I am talking about the help desk technician in a call center, providing remote IT Support.
Working a role as a help desk technician or help desk analyst is often the first stepping stone for someone looking to get into information technology. Therefore, I feel it is very important to understand what a typical day in the life of a help desk support technician looks like.

Helpdesk is very underrated, it gets a bad rep. I tell people to learn the basics by working helpdesk than you can focus on high end jobs. Imagine working a high end job without fixing stuff on the basic level first. Also depends where you work and the company. Some companies like hedge funds pay very high for helpdesk and its your normal 8 to 5 job with good benefits. Good video!

Totally agree. The foundation to a successful career in I.T. is often built at the help desk level.

I’m a former ethical hacker and software developer and I went back to IT support. If you have experience elsewhere you can meet 6 figures no problem even remote.

@@shawnmendrek3544 no an ethical h4cker in cyber security a white hat. One of the good guys. Helping company’s secure their networks and Web apps. With permission. And no I’m saying I make 100k+ as an IT engineer. The more experience someone has the more money because my job as an IT engineer requires knowledge of coding and scripting which my former ethical H4cking and software development roles helped me in make that much in IT. Cyber security is the most needed and in demand industry for tech rn. As you see anonymous group and others such as worm (Russian hacking group) and many others such as governments launching full on cyber attacks. For an ethical h4cker or red teamer even.. you need to find, verify, and report vulnerabilities within that company’s parameters. So you can greatly reduce the amount of breaches and unauthorized access. NOTE: nothing is safe but it’s helps reduce that kinda stuff. The starting pay average for an ethical hacker even for a Junior pentester is around 75k - 85k

@@shawnmendrek3544 what do u like and enjoy? Because loving your job is worth more than any piece of paper. My opinion at least. I’d rather be happy and love what I do and make a positive impact on people and society. Do you like building things? Software programs? Do you like web development or AI and machine learning? Do you like finding vulns? Do you like Information Technology and helping others fix their problems on which they can’t do for themselves? Do what makes you happy man. For me I hate going to work I work remote jobs I like having my private bathroom get a snack whenever be in my own home with privacy. It’s up to you just commit and go all the way in. P.S. NOBODY expects you to know everything haha not even close. It’s ok to ask questions and it’s ok to be wrong as long as your willing to learn and fix mistakes. Bro if people knew everything and every answer that wouldn’t be a human that would be a robot haha

I recently transitioned from a customer-facing helpdesk role to an internal helpdesk role, and let me tell ya, it's been a breathe of fresh air. I did retail for 10 years and the last thing I wanted was to basically be doing that same thing, but from a different perspective. I've always been a fan of hospital IT, so I'm excited to finally get away from customers and work my way up through the medical industry.

We make the IT Helpdesk for the City I live. So the company is managing the infrastructure like schools, financial department and so on. We have 30 calls max a day. We get an call and try to help. After that I get out of the line for the time I need to fix the issue. If it's fixed I make my documentation and after that I go back on the line. 100 calls? That's crazy. For me 30 is a lot. 40 max if a big infrastructure incident happened. I think helpdesk is handled differently depending on where you work right? We have SLA for how long we need to close the incident. Not for the call time. And an SLA that no customer should wait more than 10 seconds in the queue. But we only have a queue on Monday when everyone forget their credentials :)
@ITCareerGuide
@ITCareerGuide 3 года назад
Each company is different for sure. Each country is different. Some people prefer an actual phone conversation while others are happy not having to talk to a person and rather use chat or a ticketing system. There are many options for SLAs and reporting. Think about how you can improve the service even more and how you can measure it. Use surveys as an example and then use that data to act on it.

100 calls per day? Wow. I only do 20 and then I'm tired. After the first ring of the telephone we have 30 seconds to answer the call. How long were your calls? I speak 5 minutes and 45 minutes and operate by remote control (use PowerShell commands, clear the cache of the programs / Windows, install / uninstall programs, reboot the pc, do screenshots for the documentation in the ticket system, reset passwords, try to understand is the problem of the issue etc..). How big are the Helpdesk teams in the US? Here in Germany where I live, the teams are between 10 and 20 persons.
@ITCareerGuide

Those were not the most challenging calls and more informational in most cases. In my second call center job I had 4-6 calls a day, but they could last hours. I found that draining and stressful.

Not every workplace is great. You may have a manager you do not like or it is more sweatshop driven by extremely ambitious numbers/SLAa, etc. = can be very stressful. Or the pay may low and the hours long.

Dear God. Are all help desk positions that cramp? Passed my trifecta from Comptia. But deefinitely second guessing a help desk position. I think I'll just help the locals out unofficially.

Helpdesk is one way into IT, but not the only one. The reason why helpdesk is mentioned so often is that there is a lot of opportunity. Most people in a helpdesk role don't stay for very long and move up. That means there are always job openings and newcomers to the field may get a foot in the door.
@jazzyniko

Wtf? That kind of job seems to be super stressful! Is it good paid? I like learning about computers and tech in general but i think the dealing with customers thing is just awful 😬 I think I'll just continue learning to code rather than helpdesk related stuff 😅

I agree that it can be stressful, but if you treat it as a stepping stone than it should not be a problem. Soak up as much knowledge as you can and use it down the road.

You get better as you do more interviews, don't worry about it. Make sure you practice at home and having someone interview you. Otherwise you record yourself so you feel less nervous during the actual job interview. Hopefully that helps.

Does having an accent make the job hunting difficult for Latin people or even Indian people, even if you have the knowledge and the customer service experience ?

I have a german accent and it was never a problem. Record your own conversations. Speak slowly. Practice certain words that may sound difficult to understand.
@jazzyniko

In my opinion it does matter. A native voice commands respect and it's always much appreciated. I struggle sometimes understanding heavily foreign accents and it put me off as well (Even though English is not my native language) Yes the guy from this channel is German (I know coz I interact with lots of german customers everyday ) but he doesn't have strong German accent and he has a good command of the English language. PS: Sometimes I wonder how Arnold schwarzenegger made it in the movie industry 😜
