Its been four and a half years since the original day in the life video. Recently I have taken a new route that is substantially different than anything I've done previous.
This is a rural route that averages 90 stops, about 130 miles and zero pickups.

So cool that you've made a new one. Just a month ago, I was watching your first one while I was going through driver orientation. Up here in Canada so far, I've done rather similar routes in terms of mileage and stops, but mostly in a Sprinter van as some areas are ridiculously remote and even a P5 won't fit. Cannot wait to be full time. Everyone's I've met since my first interviews said it was a really hard job but I love it to death, guess I'm crazy. lol Keep up the good work, buddy!

I'm interested in becoming a seasonal UPS driver, can you explain to me this whole issue on pickups? I've seen several comments and forums in regards to UPS pickups being a bad thing or rather one of the cons of the job.
@IanRI1911
@IanRI1911 5 лет назад
It's just that some routes get hammered with pickups. You'll be completing stops, making room in your truck to finally be able to move around, and then it's time to stuff it full again. Imagine you barely have room to move in your truck, but then you have to pick up 50 50lb boxes and make them fit. You'll get very good at playing box tetris.
@reeda9358
@reeda9358 5 лет назад
@@IanRI1911 Oh gosh that sounds horrible, is there anyway to refuse the delivery route in advance or does it just get assigned to you? Personally, I only arrange pickups for items that are small parcels to huge boxes. Now that I know what the drivers go through, holy crap man I feel bad. I thank all of you UPS drivers for all your diligent effort in insuring all our packages get to the destination in time.
@IanRI1911
@IanRI1911 5 лет назад
The routes are bid on, the most senior driver gets the route they want. So, a new driver is kinda stuck doing whatever else no one wants until they gain more seniority. As much as the job can suck, it's worth it because the pay and benefits are very hard to beat. Once drivers have a few years in, you almost never see anyone quit the job.
@cynicaltexan9639
@cynicaltexan9639 5 лет назад
@@reeda9358 I don't have an issue with pick ups personally. My customers usually understand and let me come back later when I have room(This is a rare case, for the rare 1030 am commit pickup, I had a school that I had to pick up at 1030 am which was roughly 45 min after i left the center and 25 min since i got to my route, I had about 15-20 stops off still had no room lol) most stops i have ever went out with(300). In rare cases that you dont have room in your truck, just call the center and they will send another driver to bleed it off. I think it really depends on your area.

Awesome Video! I was having a problem with a driver who has a noisy Jeep and everyone in his apartment complex was complaining about the noise. Police were called and he was told that we would get tickets and they let him go. Building management was called about the noise and was told by the driver that "he works for UPS". My guess, was that the job is tough, and I'm sure he has his daily input of bullshit to deal with. Had he approached us, we would've understood. Watching this video has done that. I only hope this driver realizes that going forward.

@NeonGrayEdits 5 лет назад
Thanks for noticing the work that went into the video. As for working here. UPS hires 7 drivers from within the company (people from the warehouse) then one from outside. Most people work the am shift 3:45-8:45 or the pm shift from 5-8:30 and do this from 3-5 years. At that point it is there turn to go driving. When you are the bottom couple of drivers you call in every morning to see if they need you. You may only work 2-3 days a week. After 3-6 months you would most likely be driving every day. I drive for 15 years to get this route. All that said this is our center and all these lengths of time will vary from city to city. I enjoy my job and God willing I will retire from here some day.

I did 118 in about 12hr most days. I did 130 two days in about 13.5 we had a 9:00 start and left the building about 9:30 on avg. this was my first peak without a helper and it was AWESOME:)

@@NeonGrayEdits I tend to stay away from rural routes. So my biggest peak route was, i went out with, 300 presented and 305 actual(apartments :) ) My helper didnt answer. Left the building at roughly 9:45 finished about 2100. with 255 stops completed. I gave some away. This isnt my personal route. This route usually has 180-190 non peak stops.

I worked in Chicago and one of our guys was robbed on his first day and shot dead in the back of his truck. They stripped his body naked and left him there. Management is so terrible they didn’t even realize he was missing for over 2 days they are just used to people working for days on end without clocking out so they figured nothing of it

Any advise for those of us getting ready to start driving soon? I'm going full time driving in February. Kind of nervous because I've heard the 30 days probation plus learning your route can be hard but I'm also excited at the same time and looking forward to a long career since I'm only 21. I’ll say it to. Take it One. Stop. At. A. Time. You’ve got 30 days to get familiar with your area and get up to speed. Also - spend your spare time driving in your personal vehicle to become familiar with the streets. It helps.

Buddy best wishes but in Houston we slave lol... like I did 161 stops in 4! Hours and didn’t get called out but my rear door was open and got bitched at.... You are good face for ups and it does pay well but I think driver down south should make 10-15% more... The average temp is 125% in my truck and that’s nothing short of the truth !!!! Up north you can escape the cold, heaters, and cloths and doors shut. Down here, we can be naked and no help we’ll come... be grateful
@NeonGrayEdits

David Simon - I hear ya. I’m fine if you got paid more cuz the heat. You have to consider miles in yours stops per hour. My 90 stops is about 125 miles. I’m guessing your 161 was less than 10 miles. Thanks for the kind words, happy delivering 👍🏻
