29th June 2024 - This past weekend, the Coton Orchard Bioblitz concluded the Cambridge Nature Festival, a month-long celebration of our natural world and its protectors. A heartfelt thanks to Ben Greig from OTV for organising and to the experts from Butterfly Conservation Trust, RSPB, Wildlife Trust, Natural England, and the Cambridge Moth and Mammal groups for sharing their knowledge and recording findings to strengthen our case for preserving Coton Orchard.
We deeply appreciate everyone who participated, especially the Coton Footpath residents & CBAG members. The day's message was clear: "Rare" is becoming the new "Common." Species like nightingales, down by over 90% since the 1960s, and song thrushes, down 51%, still find sanctuary in Coton. This area is a rare refuge in Cambridgeshire, thanks to its diverse habitats.
On behalf of possibly the last Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, the last Turtle Dove, and all the voiceless species in the orchard, please vote for one of the six South Cambs parliamentary candidates who took the time to visit and understand what's at stake-not the one who didn’t, whose party has broken promises to our village. Thank you.
