A Day Water Bucketing with Helicopters

In Canada, thousands of aircraft are deployed every year to help fight the spread of wildfires. If fighting fires was a warzone, the water bucket would be the most effective weapon.
Water is simply dipped from the most appropriate nearby water source with the bucket and then strategically release onto the predetermined area to minimise the spread of a front, or to completely extinguish a hotspot.
On this day, we were extinguishing hotspots that were still present from a fire in the previous summer.
Early in the video I have a malfunction that disabled me from releasing the water, which I soon fixed on the ground and then continued on with the task, hitting flagged areas of concern.
At the end of the video i go over why it probably malfunctioned in the first place.

I did a small spell with woodland firefighting out of high school, we had three choppers dropping buckets trying to slow it down and the crew I was with almost got backed into a corner. If it wasn't for someone with the skill, nerve, and good awareness to drop those buckets with good accuracy we may have had to abandon our position or even god forbid do a burn over. So hats off to you and what you do, fly safe out there.

Good one! I'm a firefighter too, in Spain with the b412. Just wanted to point something out... Please, check the water release system before, ideally during the first pick up, just do a very small water pick up and check the system on the water, otherwise, if it fails with the bucket full of water, using almost all the power, you´ll get yourself into a trouble. Keep going!

I have the same problem with a sea anchor. Ie the head tangles the lines if it is stowed loose. What I have learned to do is just tie the lines together below the head so it is obvious if it has gone through the lines. This saves alot of untangling when you go to use it. Hope this works on your system too 😎👍

Nice video but I am confused. A helicopter costs thousands of dollars an hour to fly. You’re putting water on hotspots close to plenty of water. It took someone walking through the woods to find and mark those hotspots.They make small lightweight engine operated pumps that can do that job a whole lot cheaper especially that close to water like that. The time it took them to mark those spots and then wait for the helicopter to come, they could have had the area soaked and moved on. I can understand all this if there isn’t a water source close by.
@user-jq2rf4nf3o
@user-jq2rf4nf3o 7 дней назад
Helicopters don't leave ground scars like trucks and hoses make. Helicopters are cost effective and require no roads trails or fire breaks to go anywhere. A brush truck and a full crew cost the same doing all day what a helicopter does in minutes = helicopters are a force multiplyer
