i did a slightly 'deeper' dive into them. their site states they, and i quote... "Every Lordship or Ladyship title pack contributes to the preservation and protection of woodland areas in Scotland." their main page also states "all while simultaneously preserving and protecting woodland in Scotland." I e-mailed Trees for the Future, and they responded saying that indeed Established Titles has donated enough over the years for them to plant 2 million trees, but ALL of them were planted in Africa. not a single one in Scotland. looking into the business donation rates, TftF charges $0.25 per tree planted, at 2 million trees, ET has donated $500,000 to plant trees NOT IN SCOTLAND like they claim. I also e-mailed ONETREEPLANTED, and they responded that indeed ET has donated for tree plantings, but declined to state how much, how many trees or their planting location. looking into ONETREEPLANTED, they state they plant trees where they are needed, which kind of excludes forested countries like Scotland for the most part. i would wager that the trees planted from OTP were also in drier climates as well. the worst part is, donors have ZERO input on where the trees from either 501c3 company plants them at. to claim ET is donating to be "to the preservation and protection of woodland areas in Scotland.", is an outright lie yet again from ET.

@@trident8 Yes this exactly. And beside Kamikoto knives, there were couple of others companies under the same umbrella that were doing pretty shady things in their business models, so basically they have found a very thin line between being a scam and not being a scam at the same time in a legal way. If these companies weren't linked together, I would've given Established Titles the benefit of the doubt that they made a bad mistake of how to promote their "product", but just knowing their "sister" companies and how they operate, I'm absolutely sure they don't do this with good intentions or trying to make an honest business, but getting as much money they can from people while giving the bare minimum to not be qualified as a scam by the legal systems.

Yea, agree. There’s a ton of legal businesses out there that use shitty business tactics as a mean to pilfer money out of consumers. Just because the company’s conduct is legal, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s morally/ethically good. I didn’t really appreciate pointing to other examples of scam-adjacent gag gifting companies as a justification for sponsoring another just like them. But, at the end of the day, it’s kinda a ‘meh’ issue, tame controversy and maybe that’s a good thing when in the near past, there’s been sponsors like CS Go-Loto. The real issue I personally have is that it’s a Chinese company, which they try to obfuscate by touting their western staff. Supporting the CCP should be mitigated as much as possible and this should be an easy-win situation in those regards.

I always viewed it as a gag gift-type concept, but the company didn't present themselves as such. The prompts they give are intentionally misleading, having promoters completely avoid the term. Many people hear the words "legal" and "legally" and associate them with authentication. Once the sponsor uses those terms, they become dubious as "gags". To equate the two is to purposefully confuse some who don't understand the concepts surrounding land ownership or even gag gifts (some people don't understand for one reason or another). Also, the moment they start attaching themes of helping the environment and other topics many are passionate about, it begins to lean into preying on people's emotions. Yes, people shouldn't act on emotions, but it's a very human thing and plays into the adage of "hindsight is 20/20". We as humans are vulnerable creatures when our morals and values are brought into discussion. They knew adding these as incentives would lure in those who knew it was a gag gift because "well, it doesn't feel as much of a waste of money because at least I'm doing something good". Many don't bother with gag gifts anymore because they're a waste of money to get a few minutes of humor. So, including the "help the environment" aspect is a tactic that, in my opinion, constitutes this as a scam and not an innocent gag gift.

@freewyvern707
@freewyvern707 Год назад
It does. Official titles are simply what you are refered to in an official capacity. Most people use stuff like Mr or Miss, but it's personal choice what you use. Usually, that personal choice is down to customs. Such as the fact that "Mr" is designated for males while "Mrs/Miss/Ms" is designated for women. You don't need to abide by that custom, but you can't. There is also the custom that a married women is "Mrs" rather than "Miss", and that men under 18 are "Master" rather than "Mr". Historically, there was a custom in Scotland that land owners would be refered as "Laird", and Established Titles simply used that for the novelty. The official title of Lord/Lady from that is no different from the official title of "Mr" when a man turns 18; custom that really means nothing and is only an expression of identity in official capacities.

I honestly don't get why fraud is so tolerated in people's consciousness. The feeling of being scammed is humiliating, some times traumatizing and, in scale, adds significant bitterness and suffering to the world. All these scammers should be in prison. The tolerance breeds more scam when we know we can get away with it. You can not balance scamming people with doing something legitimate and say, overall, not so bad. That's why they attach the charity to their crime in the first place, to make people say, 'well, not so good but look they did plant some trees'. Fucking no, that makes it even worse! Owning 1 sq ft of land in Scotland and officially being recognized as a "lord" has no utility for most people, hence it being a somewhat amusing novelty. If you are literally just sending a random company some money for them to call you a lord, it being a "novelty" or "gag" is a criminal oversell. the single biggest piece of evidence to me for the reality of this situation is finding out they are owned by the same company as Kamikoto knives, which could arguably be a worse scam than ET is. Shadiversity already made an hour long video about why they might be a scam but ill touch on the basics and recommend the video for specifics. Kamikoto knives sell for an insane premium their complete collection being 1099 dollars (which is also conveniently ALWAYS on sale down from over 7000 dollars as are all of their items). This next point is kinda a general watch out for type thing, the "Japanese Steel" marketing, This means NOTHING, pretty much all steels run at specific industry standards with different national names so any company trying to sell you a certain nations steel is kinda pulling the wool over your eyes with the one exception being Sheffield Steel. They also use Japanese Steel as a call to history which is to feed off the mythos of the steel used to forge katana when in reality japanese steels have historically been of lower quality than European, Middle eastern and generally speaking most steel. but when you dig deep enough you end up finding out that the steel they use is one of the lowest grade stainless steels you can get, which is fine for like a 10-20 dollar kitchen knife, these knives are selling at more than 10x that. one of the most important things for a kitchen knife is edge retention (the ability to stay sharp) Kamikoto knives fail at this when put up against a FREE kitchen knife, the sharpness is used as a selling point but again that's misleading yes they can get that sharp as can ANY piece of metal that has been sharpened (shad sharpens a metal ruler to show this) so like i said Edge retention is the key. They also seem to be manufacturing the knives in China not Japan as is implied through the whole Tradition thing and these knives are not known in Japan (another red flag to the mythos of Kamikoto). Ive said the main few points that i remember about kamikoto I implore anyone reading this especially someone with reach like Muta to maybe bring more attention to it even if its just a mention of Shads video.

they source their steel from japan (but it's the cheapest shit you can make a knife out of), and the knives are done in the same design style as japanese knives. That's it. That's their entire claim for selling "authentic" japanese knives. Otherwise they're produced in China and can be purchased for a fraction of the price directly without the Kamikoto branding on them (since they don't even make their own knives, they buy them wholesale from another manufacturer and just have their branding put on them).

i was pretty sure Kamikoto was kinda bullsh!t because so many things kinda smelled weird. Like above all: why would they use RU-vidrs as a way to advertise their knives? if they were qualitative chefs would use them, not youtubers. also, just a detail: about Japanese steel having been historically lower quality than western steel, it's untrue and it's just a myth (pig iron). I found a very long, very documented response to this common myth from a passionate guy on r/swords (u/gabedamien) if you wanna read it, I can't link anything on RU-vid so just look up "Does the katana deserve the massive fandom it has?" and the first result should be the reddit in question

A dr title would indicate high level of education(protected by law in some countries). Sir title likewise would indicate having been recognized by queen/king for your merits. Old world titles have meaning still and status. The established titles scam goes a bit further even than on surface level it even looks since the title they claim you get is the lord of the estate which you couldn't put in front of your name anyway - it just means you lord over some estate, but you're not a lord in the sense that you'd be a baron or something. some roles are addressed as your lordship too, despite not being lords as such - but the point is that you don't become a lord as the honorific by just even actually buying a plot of land in actual scotland, you just lord over your land, its layers of scam - even if they didn't lie about the other thing they would be still blatantly lying about the other. Conartists like and have used them due to their utility of course. Like, being an actual lord such and such nth baron of this and that still pulls a lot of confidence and weight and you could get credit and such easy if you could pull off the role, until you got caught anyway. One thing people forget is that no matter how tradition dictates, you need to be in the tradition group. In Medieval times owning a land doesn't make you a Lord, you're more like a knight serving under a Lord who gives you a plot of land. A Lord does own lands but it's not just a plot of land as it could be an entire community of villages which can be given to the Lord's knights and a Lord technically needs to be given the title by the king himself as a sign of vassalage.
