It’s always more fun to exceed expectations (even if those expectations are low) than it is to fall short. I think this year Chargers fans should have more fun due to this year being a prove it year and I think a playoff bid would be a huge success.

Is it a hot take to say that Jaden Daniel’s will be better than drake maye? (Not saying I think he will be bad year one, but we have seen this a lot. You have a small, athletic black qb versus the prototype raw white guy.)

Happy I'm not the only one lower on the chargers. This roster has been gutted and they are obviously in a rebuild year. Herbert is amazing but we saw how Watson played in 2020 and the texans won like 4 games.
Chargers suck 😂😂 no depth new regime and a qb that could be broken from injuries and bad coaching. At least the raiders have a defense come on let’s be smart bolt fans
@@EmbraceTheAbsurd420 isn't better than the cardinals or raiders? Who lack both a potential top 10 offensive line, a borderline top 5 QB, and have even less proven coaches? The cardinals defense is easily as bad as LAs. Las Vegas is going to be starting either Gardner minshew or AOC. Make it make sense 😂
@@zackhurwitz9441 it’s called having depth and a defense. I get it it’s hard to wrap your brain around that as a charger fan and being the more delusional fan bases. I hope Harbaugh changes thay
@@okaythanks872I'm delusional? 😂 I'm not even a chargers fan. What about a QB, and an offensive line? Or any offensive coordinator other than Luke Gettsy? The raiders defense padded stats against terrible offensive teams like KC, and the chargers without Herbert. You better hope Las Vegas is fielding the second incarnation of the 2000 Ravens. They're not winning a game where they have to score more than 21 points offensively. What great depth does Arizona have?
greg roman was with jim harbaugh at stanford when andrew luck was there. he was also the offensive coordinator for the 49ers when jim harbaugh was there. john harbaugh was the one that took him, not jim.
Cardinals being so high might surprise people but they were a missed kick away from being 4-4 with Kyler back and you hope that JG continues to a elevate a defense under him in year 2
I'm a Ravens fan living in San Diego. "I'll believe it when it actually happens" had gotten me past all the Chargers hype of the last 30 years, and will probably carry me through the next decade as well. Also, Jim Harbaugh coached at University of San Diego, not San Diego State ;)
Once, decades ago, a young boy by the name of Barry Sanders had a dream. This dream gave him a divine source of talent, inspiration and brilliance which would lead him to become a Hall of Fame legend. This dream touched on the greatness of a man who was not yet then born, but who stood apart from time itself. This was a dream... of Kimani Vidal.
46:25 Hayden Hurst definitely had a down year last year with the Panthers, but prior to signing with Carolina. He was with Cincy and was absolutely electric with the energy he brought. Somewhat limited by injuries unfortunately, only 13 games played, but within those 13-games: 52 receptions, 414 yards, and 2-TD's. Visually underwhelming but his on the field energy played a big impact. Whenever he touched the ball it was like an adrenaline shot to the offense, (from a fan's perspective at least.)

I mean i like the offense. The O-line leaves some to be desired but ite a good starting point. I like Gannon. He got his team to fight hard last year. Defense needs work though. I could see it being the steelers.
Pretty huge surprise tbh. I mean I get it but based on how they did last year but Herbert being hopefully healthy and Harbaugh replacing Staley should get them to be at least a mediocre 8/9 win team I feel like. But it is the Chargers so they can always surprise
@@deveanatkinson7426 so after watching tfg’s breakdown, do you still feel that way? If anything for me this video helped me realize how much more lackluster the team is. They’ll more likely than not outplay they’re ranking, but I’m not sure coming into the season on paper they really truly deserve to be that much higher
@@zod548 Yeah I can't really argue with tfg's ranking, on paper they're probably a true talent 5-7 win team but having an elite qb and at least a competent head coach give them more of a boost than you can really show on paper
The addition of an actual blocking TE I think is pretty underrated from my 3 minutes of watching so far. It’s been a huge issue for years. Maybe the debate will change my mind.
To elaborate more, you said Hayden Hurst could be about 80% of what Everett brought to the team, but I think nobody in the position group could bring 80% of what Dissly brings in the blocking department.
Damn and I thought I was low on the Chargers Pre-watch opinion guesses: 1. He hates the Roman hire 2. Minter is unproven 3. Bad personnel on defense, particularly in the 2nd/3rd levels 4. Herbert's starting to cap out
Brenden Rice never deserved Round 2 or even 3 hype.. But as a 7th rounder, he was absolutely worth the pick and i think he will outperform most 7th round rookies
All these “nepo” hires have had success working with Harbaugh. Most of them are on the defensive side of the ball and ran the defense they’re installing for the last 2-4 years lol.
Tbh this chargers team reminds me of what we were all saying about the rams this time last year. Both with a very top heavy injury prone roster, but a great QB and coach combination. Part of me wonders if the Chargers can do something similar especially with an easy schedule.
@@raging_crocodile2081alot of players breaking out on top of having an offensive genius is what led to that. I’d be shocked if the same played out for the chargers, not because of the players but because Roman is just so bad
Superb breakdown Marcus. For a non-Charger fan your knowledge is ridiculous and it's a treat watching these annually. The one opinion in this video I want to address is the big one: Justin Herbert. For me, the "issue" in his game you detected is simply a case of "Herbert sometimes processes things too quickly". This is a brainiac whose ability to process information and be coachable is widely acclaimed. Sometimes, I think he operates the Offense almost 'too perfectly', robotically and mechanically, as he's coached to do it. I blame Cristobal and Joe Lombardi for this. And this is where sometimes the All-22 will show Herbert miss an opportunity for a deep completion in favor of a quick win. Using descriptions like 'pocket feel' or pocket awareness', for me, is wrong because Herbert's ability to feel where pressure is coming from, when he has time, and when he doesn't etc, is as Elite as any of the Elite QBs you mentioned as reference points. It's not a lack of "It" factor, I suspect it's simply a slightly conservative game style and the way he's been coached. If Greg Roman and Harbaugh encourage Herbert to wait and take more deep shots, I suspect he will, and it's not an inability to do so that you're watching on tape. However, I'm not sure if Roman/Harbaugh actually will want anything different to what Herbert already does. They are also quite conservative operators so it might be more of the same moving forward with 'quick wins' encouraged more than letting the pass concept develop (which naturally comes with greater risk and invites pressure). We'll soon find out. Other than overlooking tiny things like Pipkins is expected to start at RG (for some reason!), and that Rashawn Slater played with a double high ankle sprain all last season after the Vikes game (thus, explaining his middling run blocking grades), I thought this was an excellent team breakdown by you. Well done.
Yeah I just will continue to disagree about the way he can manage the rush. He senses pressure when it occurs quickly extremely well. But he does not have the ability to sense when pressure isn't there and how to manage the pocket as the play naturally breaks down.
@@ThatFranchiseGuy I mean the beauty of this thing is there are multiple potential explanations for stuff that shows up on tape, and some of it is difficult to quantify like trust in receivers and pass protection, and scheme failing to create open windows, etc. And Herbert isn't immune from blame either, he plays his part. So I can see why you've reached the conclusion you have. Good chat. We need you to come on our show sometime ;-)
Marcus Brady, Shane Day, Sanjay Lal, and Marc Trestman better have a major say on that passing offense, not just Harbaugh and Roman. If it is the same issues with Baltimore, than that is a problem.
Of all those names, Shane is the only one without blight. Marcus Brady? Part of the staff that couldn't keep Steichen's offense on track. Sanjay? Has never stuck on a staff more than 2 years. Trestman? Literally has not been coaching for a few seasons. Looking for the hope. I don't really see it.
This is just last years Rams! Good quarterback, proven head coach, less receiving options than the rams last year, some good d-linemen (obviously not as good as AD). Definitely not exactly but they have the same upside as last years rams if they hit
I think that there's a difference between Quentin's rookie year performance and JSN's. Quentin's failures were largely his issues which also showed up in tape at TCU. JSN's performance was poor because of scheme. He literally wasn't targeted at all the first 1/3 of the season. Once the Seahawks OC remembered he existed, he started performing. If JSN's statistics at the end of the season were worse than was expected of him, it wasn't his fault; for Quentin, that's not the case.
@@nolanlight5386 unified, love to see it. In all seriousness, I love tfg but I think he has y'all too low. All things equal, I don't see how they're going to be worse than either Arizona or Las Vegas. Tampa Bay and Atlanta are in the debate as well.
God I love this series so fucking much. As a casual fan these videos are awesome entertainment that I understand like 40% of, the content is just too good
Man, those weapons are an eye-sore. This team makes so much sense as a trade partner for either SF or Cincinnati. Aiyuk in this offense would be perfect.
@@ChewsCarefully Fair compensation would probably be at minimum a conditional 2nd-1st straight up, or a player and a conditional 3rd-2nd. The conditions would be based on Aiyuk's performance throughout 2024.
Ah yes, Baltimore West. Rooting for Herbert, hopefully some of these young WR's they've drafted do end up panning out, and maybe Jim can whip this defense into being at least league average. I think this team's best case is 10 wins and sneaking into the WC, worst case, 4 or 5 wins.
Great job! As always, I love all your insight and analysis. You are my go-to for anything football related whether that be the draft, learning about players, Madden whether that's your roster or your franchises. Your videos always bring me so much enjoyment and happiness. They help keep my passion for the sport going strong. Thank you for all you do for us. You are truly amazing. I wanted to thank you, especially for this series. It brings me so much joy and gets me through so many hard days. I often come back to these in season whether it be needing help with a Madden franchise or just to see how everything's turned out. I still remember the first time I showed your content to my friends and family whether that be showing a Packers, deep dive to my family or sending my friends a couple other deep dives or having a debate about Zach Wilson after watching a draft video. Sorry to ramble on for so long. New content means a lot to me. Thanks again 💙
Chargers will finish with a winning record because thats what Jim Harbaugh does. It will be a slow burn but by season end nobody will want to face them.
Hey Marcus, love your videos! Whenever you do the Seahawks, you should interview Brandon of the Hawks Nest. He definitely deserves the love and I actually think you guys could get along really well 👍
QJ played all 17 games and got outperformed by JSN who was trapped as the WR3 and dealt with a wrist injury. If a receiver needs to “learn how to catch a football”, they should be treated as Corey Coleman until proven otherwise, no matter how desperate for an X a team is in a crappy draft class.
Great video! But I gotta say, put respect on Corey Linsley's name lol before his injury, he never allowed a sack in the 2.3 seasons he played for the Chargers
It’s a fair take. Even the mighty Jim Harbaugh will have his hands full exorcising the persistent demons of Chargering that have pretty much plagued this franchise since Madonna was a virgin. But if anyone can, it’s Harbaugh.
I disagree on the “no offensive weapons on this team” statement! You have a lot of talent on the Wr and RB and TE groups! Staying healthy and performing more consistent is key!
Threading the needle? Getting Ladd instead of a IOL hints toward passing is part Of the plan. I just hope it’s Jim’s and Greg’s plan and not just the organizations plan.
I really like the addition of the GUS bus. Buy low could hit high with dobbins and Vidal could give Herbert something he’s never had. A decent to good run game. It’s exciting to see what he can do now that they can run the ball and not put so much pressure on Herbert to cut up defenses. The line is decent but the defense has always been shaky. They got big names but haven’t lived up to the hype. Idk if bosa has just been so injured he’s not the same guy or what but Mack is aging as well. Derwin james needs to step up or ima be lookin at him like his money is funny as to what he’s bein paid. I’m excited to see what Harbaugh can do with this group. Could be underrated if the WRs can lift Herbert (lookin at u Quentin Johnson) bottom line Herbert throws piss missles plain and simple
Cowherd, Wright, and Acho are way too low on Herbert. Especially Acho because of his love for Tua. But that's why you should see those types of shows as entertainment, not actual substance
I do not know JT Woods’s personality. That said he seems like a measuring stick on how good are the coaches really at getting players to play more physical and disciplined! JT has the physical abilities to tackle and play more physical so it comes down to playing with that physical mentality and discipline.
I'm going to make a prediction. DJ Chark will move up this depth chart. If Chark gets an opportunity to start he won't give it up. The problem with Chark over the years has been his QB play. The year he put up 1k yards he was catching passes from Nick Foles and Gardner Minshew. Justin Herbert will be the best QB he has played with so far.
It does feel like we’re in a different TIER with the Saints up. Like the Chargers aren’t gonna suck, but they also have a ton of problems on paper. Ultimately, they might be like the 2023 Rams where if they have the QB and the coach, all the rest of it can be figured out.
I’m a life long Charger fan but I think you offered honest assessment on some of these position groups. We’re I’d push back a bit is the scheme change and the changes to the position coaches. I think there has been massive upgrades in that department, speaking about the defense specifically of course. I’ve wanted the Chargers to commit to the trenches and improve this defense since 2012. I think given the cap situation this offseason they’ve done about as much as you could to improve the roster depth overall. The tough decision to move on from Keenan I didn’t like at the time, but I understand the logic in bringing in more players to help the team overall. I enjoyed the video I appreciate your honest opinion on the Chargers and where they are currently. The Chargers are building the plane as they go so to speak. Realistically this is a 2-3 year rebuild in my opinion given the lack of depth Hortiz and Harbaugh inherited. Nicely done!
Marcus these are all very real issues w the Bolts that should have people understanding why they’re 25, only one id slightly push back on is their receiving threats being 31 instead of 32… yes that’s a bit anal but I feel that the Pats have such an unbelievably low upside room devoid of deep threats that Ladd moves them up if only one spot. Great stuff as always.
How is this a hot take they lost a bunch of pieces that weren’t even contributing and have to fix their entire non existent depth this year. Installing a new system on offense and defense. The chargers suck outside of Herbert and Harbaugh
The chargers got swept by the chiefs and broncos and got destroyed by the raiders last year. So they automatically deserve to be second in the division?
The bolts gonna be good marcus...coaching coaching coaching can make a big difference....good o tackles...big time qb....cmon..man...they do have a rough schedule.like denver...ugh.. derwin james..mr bosa...
I'd like to point out a couple of things. First, the Staley coaching regime should do time for coaching malpractice. That team coached by that guy went to the playoffs once and lost a huge lead...historically bad coaching. That roster was stacked. They couldn't run the ball last year. And say what you like about losing Ekeler, Williams, and Lindsley, the team didn't have them for a good chunk of last year. The Chargers upgraded each of those positions when you consider it in that light. The loss of Allen was regrettable but Ladd in this offense is going to be killer and people are overlooking Chark. Yeah, he hasn't been a world beater before, but he's never had Herbert throwing him the ball. And this team hasn't had TEs that could competently block, let alone block well. Everybody knew going in last year that Pipkins was a liability on that right side. Now he's a guard next to an awesome young talent. I think you underestimate the offense. Players with a history of injury I get, totally. But that offense is gonna be sick. As for the Defense, I think that is where the real concerns ought to be. They didn't really address that defensive interior. The defensive coordinator is new in his role at the NFL level. That DB group has historically been pedestrian. And the edges are old. The defense feels like the weak link on this team. Lack of talent...I'd concur. There are great players, just not enough. Maybe the linebacker room will play a bigger role in stopping the run. Maybe the new strength and conditioning coach will turn those guys into mutants. Maybe the coaching last year really was that bad and this new coaching staff will have that much of an improvement. Who knows? I'm just gonna say this. Harbaugh has won everywhere he has gone. Rarely has he had a QB like Herbert. Alex Smith was a bust when Harbaugh got ahold of him and Kap was fine, but his play was never really his greatest claim to fame. People talk like Roman can't scheme a passing game. That seems like lazy analysis. Why did Harbaugh, a guy that has won everywhere he's gone, choose Roman? That running game must be pretty special. Maybe Harbaugh is expecting to handle Herbert personally and will have Roman devoted to the running game. Great running games open the gaps in the defenses. Maybe I'm just overenthusiastic, but I think the league is sleeping on this team. I wonder what they were saying about the 49ers chances of doing anything in the offseason Harbaugh took over there # the over
