Currently, DJI is probably the most polarizing company in the FPV world right now. Most people know them for their really popular range of consumer-grade camera drones, but a bit over a year ago they decided to make their grand entrance into the FPV market as well. In the past few months, there have been a few rumours going around that new things are coming from DJI... could it be an actual FPV drone?

This is why I’m scared of getting into FPV. Too many options and DIY required. I’d really like a DJI FPV. I wonder if they could allow their goggles to work with their Mavic drones? That would be a nice step for me. Mavic Mini FPV. It’s small and fast enough for me as a first time FPV.

I seriously hope they don't do that. We don't need another mainstream hobby. The more mainstream something gets, the more idiots it attracts. The people that build and fly FPV drones usually have the knowledge and necessary responsibility to do so in a safe way. There is already a HUGE discussion going on about drone flying limitations, legal cases and new laws. If there are even more people flying drones, it will only get worse and one day it will get almost impossible. Also, this hobby is about building AND flying drones. Not just flying. If you can't deal with having to learn and understand your equipment, then this hobby just simply isn't for you. You can't just say "alright, I want to do this" and expect to be good at it. Everything needs practice and everything brings potential failures with it. We learn from failures. Nobody would expect to instantly become a pro-level football player because they can buy a ball and some shoes. Everything needs practice and practice is part of the hobby. For some reason the world is only about simplifying things. It can be seen everywhere. And this process of simplification takes the challenge and the fun from us. Where is the fun or the feeling of success or having accomplished something, if everything is as easy as the press of a button? I seriously hope they (DJI) don't do that.
@TheConfigurat0r
@TheConfigurat0r 3 года назад
Not everyone is a tinker. Some may be just good pilots. Of course everyone needs to know the basics and legal stuff.. But it's kind of arrogant to say the non-tinkers shouldn't be allowed to fly drones. And BTW.. I think the exact opposite will happen. When big corps step into the game the regulations will go into their favor. And that football analogy makes no sense.. Its like saying, no you can't be a quarterback because you don't know how to sew your jersey. And simplifying things is evolution. Just look back some years at how shitty the electronics and motors where before fpv got popular through DRL and things like that. Nobody will keep you from soldering if you don't like bnf. So don't judge people who just want to fly and have fun.
@detroxx56784
@detroxx56784 3 года назад
@@TheConfigurat0r I didn't say people who don't have the technical skills shouldn't be allowed to practice this hobby. The skills come with the hobby. Learning by doing. You can't study how to build FPV drones. You learn it by doing it. My analogy was not referring to American football. It was referring to what you call "soccer". What I was trying to say is: Being able to buy stuff doesn't make you good at the hobby. Being good at something requires practice. Buying a baseball bat doesn't make you a good player. Same with drones. Just buying one doesn't make you a good pilot. Building and knowing your drone is an integral part of this hobby. Yeah, you can buy pre-built ones, but that still has more learning involved in it than just buying a DJI drone. In the end, it's upon everyone to decide for themselves what they prefer. But it is a fact that DJI is killing competition. They are so powerful that they can destroy a whole market just by joining it. It kills smaller companies and at some point forces DJI's way of doing things on everyone. Basically it kills the choice. And that's why I don't want them to do it. Because it WILL influence me. Because it will kill other smaller companies that make parts for drones. And in the end I've got no choice but to buy a DJI drone. That's why I'm so against it. Simplification of things always comes with a loss of variation and customizability. Simplification is not evolution. Simplification is a way to make more money out of something because it can reach more potential customers. Sometimes it's good. Unnecessarily complex and stupid systems suck. But there is a point when it gets too much. Too simple is also not good. You can see that on DJI's own products. Their mini quads are criticized by many for being too simple and locked down. Yes, it can reach more people and make more money for DJI. But only because many people have it, doesn't mean it's a good product. Idk. Maybe you get my point, maybe you don't. I probably can't change your mind and that's fine. Different people, different opinions. In the end, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. We can't change it anyways.

This all reminds me of Windows Vrs Mac, or iPhone Vrs Android - in the early days anyway. Dji seems to come as a "complete product" while every everyone else specialises in a particular aspect - control, video, motors, flight controllers, antennas etc.... Coming from an IT background, the FPV community (and associated businesses) look like they have been build by nerds for nerds (I say this as a nerd myself), where everything is customisable to the Nth degree - as opposed to being designed for consumers, who just want something that is simple and works. I'd love to see some of the manufacturers come together to agree some sort of a standard to build to and agree a common plug/play format for putting components together - some sort of "USB for FPV" along with some universal default profiles in Betaflight - Cruise, Freestyle, etc... to get people in the air faster.

I totally agree with those that love the non flying part of this hobby(build, repair, etc....) I don't want to rain on your parade, but keep in mind DJI's stuff is closed source. They don't just want anybody messing around with their hardware. Sure, the DJI Air units go nicely in homemade builds, but how many of you guys have attempted to fix or heavily modify DJI's camera drones? They'll only allow their certified technicians to work on their drones. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind a DJI FPV drone will look very different from others in the hobby for the simple fact none of its parts will be exposed to the elements thanks to an enclosed shell. I'm still excited to see what DJI will drop, but I do still have my reservations about how this could transform the hobby. For all we know, the DJI FPV drone could be the start of a new trend where we'll see more FPV drones with complete shells over their parts, which would make fixing and taking them apart more difficult.
@BubbyFPV
@BubbyFPV 3 года назад
@@The-Opium-Den fair points, my hope would be DJI would make a rtf package, the goggles and radio will be similar to what they use now, where i can build a drone that uses that system. So when these new comers want to build there own drone for the first time, we can help them. I feel the drone that comes in the package would be like a drone to learn on and then you "graduate " from it and build your own, but still being able to use the goggles and radio that come with it
@The-Opium-Den
@The-Opium-Den 3 года назад
@@BubbyFPV Yeah, that would be nice. We already see that to an extent with DJI's goggles and the digital controller they sell now. If all goes to plan then it'd be sweet to see a much larger FPV community. Nevertheless, I hope this doesn't attract lots of riff raff who are only jumping into this hobby for the attention. Currently, the only drone I own and use is the Mavic Mini. Someday, I plan on scraping together enough cash to start doing some FPV, too. This hobby fascinates me and it'd be a shame if some reckless DJI fanboy flew this rumored FPV drone in a way that would bring a ton of bad press. No matter how DJI influences this hobby I hope the open source aspect of it remains for decades to come.

I'd love to run my own repair business but I can't see that you make enough money from the volume of work to make a full time job out of it. I'm happy to be proven wrong though ;-)

I think this would be a good upgrade for people that are already in the hobby and are already decent at flying. Hey Matt, I’m sure you are about 90% correct with your “prediction”. But I also think they will not only cater for the filming type ( it’s most certainly going to be a cinewhoop bounce-off-the-wall type of drone), but I think or hope they’ll allow the people in it for just the thrill of flying FPV too! The most valuable factor that validates this all, is that DJI is actually owned by iFlight, which makes them quite familiar to the existing fpv industry. They started out making the components. And DJI was a spin-off that could be axed if it did not perfrom as expected. The FPV effort from iFlight will probably be structures the same way ...

Maybe FPV newbies go and purchase immediately. I would love DJI to change the size of their "phantom" digital controller to a "tango" sized digital controller. I haven't purchased the DJI googles yet but will soon.

Yes but I don’t really see the point. If they do decide to switch away from the dji controller (lets say for racing) it could be harder to get used to from the consumers standpoint.

You will still have to learn how to repair your drone. Unless you wanna just send it to DJI each time you crash and need to replace something. $$$ Also tuning isnt a thing anymore. Betaflight with RPM filtering is so good now all you do is use the filter sliders to remove propwash. You dont have to tune quads anymore unless you have problem quad.
@cinialvespow1054

Great to know about the tuning, thanks! I just got a nazgul 5 v2, the stock tune feels nice, do you reccomend I go add some rpm filtering, and maybe also rc smoothing?

Freestyle fpv drone is the missing part of the puzzle........ That's the only thing DJI needs to cover, almost for every sector they have specific gear, they want to make a place in the growing fpv community.........it's good as well as bad....... We can expect pretty top notch quality rc gear from DJI ( like Digital FPV system) but again whatever they make everything is proprietary means those devices doesn't have cross compatibility with other !! And that will kill the open source projects means no DIY creativity any more......

The only way I would be open to a DJI FPV option. Is if they left it an open platform. I can choose my own batteries, ESCs, motors, propellers, etc. No way I would want to be locked in, being forced to purchase their equipment only. That is exactly why I don't own Apple devices as well. Too much control.

In a way sad to see. I build drones for a secondary income and generally these are for filmmakers, so with this new potential drone, a chunk of my income could quite possibly be lost. In a way its nice dji are having a try, but still

DJI did release an fpv drone a few years ago and needless to say, it failed for several reasons. Proprietary propellers being one. I don't think DJI will be successful if they try to do the same again. There has to be something different. I don't think that soldering and repair, setting up Betaflight is the biggest difficulty. I think flying and getting over the fear is a way higher threshold than the technical side if it. The question is also who would buy a DJI fpv drone? You can buy any fpv drone that fits your taste so why DJI. There is also the uncertainty what DJI will do if there are new regulations in place. They do have geofencing on other drones and they will most likely put geofencing on any new product too. We don't even know if the DJI goggles will continue working after the new FAA regulations become reality.

I don't think a customer buying a dji fpv quad would care that the dji quad only takes dji props

Great points, I especially resonate with how you said the technical side is not as hard as the flying and the skill progression curve
@Siamect
@Siamect 3 года назад
@@cinialvespow1054 I don't think so either. But I think that many people who want to buy any FPV drone would not buy DJI or any other drone with proprietary propellers or other proprietary parts.

I hope NOT. The hobby is in crisis with regulation and the threat of having all airspace restricted to the point that we can't fly anymore (All because of the perceived threat from DJI consumer drones). You're right:- FPV is not a consumer hobby and I truly hope that it stays that way. Currently the hobby is made up of people who are interested in Flying and not just getting a 'cool' bit of video. If DJI starts making FPV drones it will finish the hobby for everyone because the 'consumers' that buy them don't consider whether their flight is safe (or sensible). half of them still don't understand how to operate their own equipment let alone fly them safely. It won't be long before some idiot kills someone with a DJI FPV drone. (let's NOT do that people).

You cannot buy airplane and start to be a pilot , even if DJI will bring an awesome drone as a tool , you will always need some piloting skills and no a gimble drone skills , like really control a flying drone with fast responsive capabilities for fast shoots and really know what you are doing Right this tool will be more easy entrance but still there will be a learning curve that is not that fast like other drones

I can build drones no problem and do so. But more often than not I will buy BNF drones, its cheaper and save me alot of time. Once you can build you can easily see how to fix etc these prebuilt drone. Unfortunately I still think building first is best, start with a simple whoop style board build. Then move on once you can fly to 5inch builds or BNF.

Customizing and repairing your drone is need to fly. If DJI makes all there stuff just DJI, they will lose most of the fpv fans. I have a TH 2 free, ev800d goggles and use betaflight on my android Samsung S8 active. Still under my $1k budget and looking for a bigger drone. It is getting easier to jump in the hobby as more tech drops in price.

FPV should keep its steep learning curve. With more accessible drones, more morons will fly these things at places they shouldn't fly. By 2023 the hobby will be dead and closed ecosystems will decide if you can fly or not. Analog will be dominated by pirate pilots though.

They will produce a few kits that you will assemble. They are not going to want to deal with all of the returns when people crash. They pretty much already have this on their site. I agree there are way too many options and way too little customer support. I buy stuff all of the time from Chinese web sites and it shows up a month later already defective. It’s really a rip-off. All of the recommended bind and fly drones are always SOLD OUT. I don’t mind learning. I am a technical person, but I cannot stand waiting forever for parts. There are way too many receivers. The binding and connection problems are constant. There is nobody to ask. I hope DJI does jump in all of that way. I hope they make Betaflight obsolete for their products. Why not? Beteflight is confusing as hell for a new guy. Even for a new guy that deals with electronics daily. Too many options that you do not need. If you get the DJI system right now you will save money in the long run. Goggles are a rip off and junk unless you spend $500 and even then you need a crossfire, upgraded antennas, and 10,000 other things to consider.
@cinialvespow1054
@cinialvespow1054 3 года назад
There's not way too many recievers, there's like 4 that really matter. Just get crossfire v2 Binding is EASY on crossfire / tracer, and updating firmware is actually painless, the module will update the reciever over the air in like 30 seconds. Best quality of life upgrade I've made for myself in fpv. Shame that you received defective gear, that feels horrible. If you bought through PayPal you can make a claim and get a refund. Depending on where you live there can be stores in your country thst ship quickly. I purchased my BNF nazgul 5v2 from my countries local retailer, for not much more than it is on banggood for, came next day.

Eventually in this hobby you are forced to learn how to build. Things break constantly and there's nothing you can do about it if you don't learn how to fix it. It's time consuming whether you buy a rtf or build it yourself.
