A Donzi 18 powered by a NASCAR engine, Will it Run? 

Thats a really nice boat. Absolutely beautiful. But. Thats not a NASCAR engine. Probably a standard 260 MerCruiser with a Holley carb and a dress up kit. If that was a NASCAR engine, you would be doing well over 90MPH. A real NASCAR engine has over 800 horsepower. From what I see on your video, you hit 60MPH. My 17' Checkmate with a 150HP mercury outboard does 65MPH. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Guys as a long time fast boat owner please put your life jackets on and your engine kill lanyard. If something happened at speed your chance of survival will greatly improve. As a long time Donzi owner including a sweet 16 I will say that a very nicely prepared boat.

I love fast boats. I love racing engines. However I like seeing people stay alive, why not wear your life jackets at those speeds. I’m pretty sure there weren’t even any jackets on board. That’s illegal, just in case you were not aware.

I sure hope it's an older NASCAR engine. Sure as HELL wouldn't want one of their newer "WOKE" engines. Ya want one from back when Men were Men,and Women were DOUBLE BREASTED.

I'm pretty sure a Nascar engine is capable of running upwards 8000+ RPM. You managed 6k and while it's impressive in its own right, the Mercruiser small block v8's can do the same all day long and never miss a beat. But I don't want to shit on your good times and I'm happy to see you are enjoying your beautiful boat with the people you care about in your life. Also thank you for doing what many of us won't do and that is making and sharing your videos with us.

That hardly looks like a NASCAR engine, unless it is one from the 80's. It certainly isn't a NASCAR SB2 engine, which they've been using since the late 90's ... if it was newer, it would surely blow the drive right out of the back of that transom. Not even sure you can get marine manifolds, which this clearly has, for an SB2 small block. It clearly has regular Small Block manifolds, not SB2's. Someone saw this guy coming and ripped him off for this engine. Canadians, what can you do?

I worked at Sierra Boat Company in Lake Tahoe in the 80's and we had a 21' Donzi with a Ford SOHC 427 NASCAR motor. That thing was a blast to drive.

Beautiful boat. 🤟🤟 My best friend had an 18' back in the '70s. I only have one word of advice...get a kill switch and ware the lanyard at ALL times, AMHIK. We now run an Allison GSE with a Gen2 Merc 200xs ROS, my Cruise control that sits next to me keeps it under 90.😂😂😂

Very nice. I used to work for a Donzi Dealer. The 22 Classic is probably the best boat of it's kind ever made. That is the little brother.

It seems much faster, without a windshield to duck behind.. Get friendly with big bugs, because bald head. Splat a fat bug at 50-60-70 on bare skin. Makes you feel ALIVE!?.

Dont leave the electric fuel pump on without the engine running. Turn it on to prime the system, start it up then turn the pump on once the engine is running. Holley needle and seats will stick and you can fill a couple of cylinders with gas and hydraulic it. Should run on a mechanical pump, with an electric for priming.

I’ve been lucky to own a nascar built engine…..this doesn’t turn up or sound quite like mine. But you guys are still cool as heck.

Marine power is built different than NASCAR racing engines To put one in a boat would be foolish

There was a Donzi like that in the Down River area of the Detroit River back in the late 70’s, early 80’s. Always one of my favorites.

Super nice boat - but I'm having a hard time believing that's a NASCAR engine... Nowhere near enough power, doesn't rev nearly high enough, and the propeller pitch wasn't so extreme that it would cause any issues.

This 18 had a Volvo engine in it because of the e left side steering and now you have merc drive that has a righthand prop unless you have a left hand drive.. Worked For Donzi from 10/77 till 08/86.

Agree with previous comments. Beautiful boat. However, a 225 outboard on that boat would push it faster than you were going in this video. You aren't getting a ton of power though that V8 at all.

Ran a sweet 16 with a small V8, would run about 58mph. It was a blast. Every time it came out of the water it would roll to the left & driver was on the right. Try running fast when its rough

Pretty sure the flat side was f the steering wheel belongs on the bottom for leg clearance. It looks silly upside down, and prevents 10&2 o’clock hand positioning.

Steven below has no eye for class. I had an eighteen-foot Donzi back in the early 70's with a Holmon Moody 289 Ford engine. There was nothing around that could even come close to beating it in speed and like yours, looks. Pick up a lot of girls in the summertime until I met the one who would become my wife. This coming November we will have 49 years together. Sold Donzi by word of mouth. People with MerCruiser's can't give them away.

My firestar 180 with a stock 5.7 merc & 600cfm 4barrel will turn 6k rpm and run 60 knots all day. That’s one sick NASCAR engine if it is one. Nice Donzi tho, too bad its designed for a small kid to drive comfortably.

Shim the inside bolt on that starter & it will quit eating at the, flex plate. I wanna say 5/16 but it's been, awhile. Get you some shims & shim between the engine block & the starter. Just put it on the, inside. I used to fold the shim & slip the cut out end under that one, side/the inside. Thank me, later.🎉
