I cannot really decide if I like Puritanical EM or Deathcult Armageddon more - they are both amazing in their own ways but too different to really compare them. I also like the albums after that but not as much as these two. Abrahadabra has some really good songs but in my opinion there are also some songs that are absolutely terrible on that album :D

I think it’s cool that you chose to do a review of this album. I would say that is is a true masterpiece, and very deserving of a review- even after 18 yrs. All of the nuances from Nick Barker, the splash cymbals, the hi- hat accents, the blasts and down blasts, it was all orchestrated perfectly. The guitars- while not all that complex are also extremely well written, and the vocals are extremely well written while being dark, and make it even more insane. This album is like a book where every time you read it, you find something new. Thumbs up Wanja!

Really good review and I completely agree with you. I found it as I was looking for some Nick Barker videos (Indoctrination live on Wacken with him on drums is available). The four albums he recorded with Cradle Of Filth, along with Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, marked my drumming forever. Its 2018 and I've not found a drummer as much as interesting like him, at least in extreme metal. His patterns and originality (as you mention as well) are simply spectacular. Thanks for sharing your opinion and keep up the good work, is good to find good content on the Internet these days ;)

I play keyboards and piano, but I've always noticed the creativeness of Nicholas Barker, it's like " Frédéric Chopin " of drumming. It's like he is composing on drums, makes a song "complete". Every hit is perfectly in place, not to prove anything to anyone(like "I'm the fastest or can play most complicated patterns ever" etc.), just serves the song and compose perfectly. Review was great! I watched until the very end. I really like this album too, it's one of those albums like winds of creation by decapitated or covenant by morbid angel where I fell in love with the drums straight away and tried to play along on my headphones but to no avail. Nicholas barker is criminally underrated imo.

"I mean first we have the singer holding his decapitated head".

I think Dimmu clearly peaked with Death Cult Armageddon. Nick sounded like he got more comfy with the Dimmu material and Mustis had finally major influences in song writing and sound. But PEM was a huge step stone of course. Probably 5 years ahead of it's time.

Nicholas Barker is not the best extreme metal drummer but he is a genius on percusion, he has his own signature tone beat style which is remarkable in the metal drummer history. Personaly I admire Pete Sandoval, Nicholas Barker, Hell Hammer and Trym but to me Nicholas Barker beat style is beyond of all them. Good review.

I got to meet Nick Barker on this tour, I told him he was the best drummer and he said "No, I'm not" but I got him to sign my concert ticket. Funny thing is when I met Devin Townsend and told him he was the best musician at the show I saw (it was Nile, Napalm Death, Strapping Young Lad and Dark Tranquillity) and he didn't say "No I'm not" he just said "Thank you" I think drummers are more modest than guitarist and vocalist but I guess it depends on the person. Edit: After this album, I only liked "In Sorte Diaboli". A lot of the synth sounds on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia sounds a lot like Arcturus synth sounds. I think Galder shaped some of the rhythm guitar sound in this album too, because if you notice the guitar riffs were more catchy like Old Man's Child riffs were.

I've literally played this album hundreds of times since I bought it 20 years ago & I know every note by heart. It is their best album. Especially the drumming. This is probably my favorite metal album for drumming. Progenies is a close second. But this one definitely has more going on simultaneously throughout the album. If I had to sum it up in a few words it would probably be fantastically fluent. By far, an underrated album.

I'm looking forward to hearing your cover. Take your time, make it sound as good as you can. Hellhammer takes the first place on my list. Also, the work he has done for Mayhem cannot be forgotten, it is a true masterpiece.

Nicolas Barker is the best creative black metal drummer. Not only via the succession in this album but also the album Death Cult Armageddon (check out the floor toms motives at the end of the slower fills. I personally love sound with the motives) and as well as the albums of Creadle of Filth. The simplest e.g., think the song, Her ghost in the fog from COF, or Saffron Curse or Cuthulu Dawn, or the entire albums, Dusk and Her Embrace or Cruelty and the Beast, Vempire, even the first official album The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, just comments or reviews not enough. Let me tell you something, even though he couldn't play those rhythms as a drummer, his master mind is still unique. Just check out Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth after he left the bands (I just want to exclude the magnificent Bitter Suites to Succubi album with the drummer, Adrian Erlandsson), really hate the music both bands do now. Not any creativeness, not even close. Does anyone can recommend this kind of drummer with the same musical quality in the similar genders?
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 4 года назад
Her Ghost in the Fog, Saffron's Curse and Cthulu Dawn are from the Midian album and that was played by Adrian Erlandsson ;) Anyway, if you are looking for creative drummers with a similar style, some of the newer CoF material is actually pretty awesome and Marthus is a very worthy successor to Barker. Check out songs like The Spawn of Love and War, The Cult of Venus Aversa or Right Wing of the Garden Triptych - the drumming on these is awesome and kind of has a similar "spirit" to Nick Barkers drumming.

Wanja [Nechtan] Gröger Ok, you got me. I spent so much times to listen the albums of both cof and dimmu, I slept and awake with their music, literally withe the headphone. Adrian is also magnificent too. About the new drummers of dimmu and cradle, naaa, I don’t find them creative that much. People change, maybe I changed. Last 3 years I loved Whitechapelle’s and Decapitated’s both musical and drumming creativity, of course my preferences changed too =). And kinda like Ulcreate some. You know what, it is not easy to find a long term consumable music anymore. Cradle is best band to me and they totally fucked up with the album damnation and a day. A music with no big plans is not for Cof. The last successful album Death Cult Armeggedon of Dimmu Borgir and then they just turned into trash. Metal drumming, especially death and black, is the only key for a long period consumable music. I hope you know how I feel.

I've been listening and attempting to play along to this album for years myself. Couldn't have said it better regarding the orchestra, Nick's brutal, accurate and creative playing and the bands otherworldly sounds. I think the DVD they brought out the same time might be worth mentioning, there's a few tunes from PEM on it which is worth buying for alone, you also get to see Nick playing his versions of older Dimmu songs and putting his influence on them, which means playing faster, harder and more badass. The tour bus, backstage, etc videos are a bit strange but no less weird than Frank Zappas Baby Snakes footage :).

Nick is solid you can also see him play phantom of the opera live. Interesting review concept, hope you stick with it as it has potential. I first heard Nicholas Barker in mid 90s on CoF's first album. I think he's underrated which might have more to do with a lack of visibility media wise. My interest in Dimmu kinda of waned after Spiritual Black Dimensions, I still like For All Tid and Enthrone... It's been over a decade since I heard Puritanical though which I'll check out again after this little reminder

I disagree with your statement that this album is difficult to get into at first. This for me is one of their best albums, if not their number one album. Loved it from start to finish the very first time i heard it. It helped that i had already seen the live video of King of... as that song is so good to see them play. It's not the most epic album but it's got that cold and as you say, industrial feel to the sound, which i personally think is very black metal.

the irony is that drummers tend to have hearing loss from the volume of raw drums and some can't hear the patterns of cybals in between! a drummer friend of mine think that those left/right rides are done with a "bell" (small inverted cymbal that would be like a ride with the most part cut off) and a ride... and i thought he had a "crash-ride" on one side and hit the top. those 2 instances also are both not the same patterns making them confusing! but the album sounds like ice and snow the whole part! even in tyranny, the strums part in the middle sounds like the top of a mountain with some clear skies... like some great vast view... bass drums = walking on hard frozen snow cymbals = cold air and ice! if "Epic" would try to "BE" "EPICALL" this album would come out!

@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 лет назад
Hellhammer, Inferno, Frost, Pete Sandoval...
@Heliophobos
@Heliophobos 6 лет назад
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 лет назад
@Heliophobos
@Heliophobos 6 лет назад
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 лет назад

Puritanical is one of my least favourite dimmu album, but the drumming is just incredible. Having said that, I believe that in death cult armageddon Nick did a better job.

This album is not in any way strange, it is just what good music is in form of metal. But sure, they will say because it doesn't have mindless blast beating and pointless screaming about churches burning, it's not a great Black Metal album.
