Dimmu peaked in 2001 - 2003 with the best line up they ever had. Including Mustis, Vortex and Nicholas. Already using real orchestras, but still powerful and just blasting everything away. 2007 In Sorte Diablo was a unfortunate/misfired concept album, whatever they wanted to do here, it just was not good. Then the answer to your question happened, the loss of Mustis and Vortex. To this very day they never recovered from this loss. I do not blame anyone here, as nobody knows what happened. But in the end, it surely was about (as always) just the money/royalties. Nothing more, nothing less. But they lost 2 unique trademarks, Mustis atmospheric keyboards and Vortex fantastic clean voice. Just listen to "The insight and the Catharsis" and everybody will know what I mean. Even back in 1997 both Mustis and Vortex already showing what they are capable of. They never recovered from this and still maneuvering around this fact with the overuse of orchestras and choirs. Choirs as a lukewarm replacement of Vortex clean vocals.
@PatPosse
@PatPosse 2 года назад
Hey man, I have to agree with your statement. That was in fact their best lineup and there absolute peak both in popularity and musicality. That's when I got into them (back in high school) and was in awe of Barker's contribution to the band's sound. Vortex's vocals were so good too! Downhill from then on if you ask me. I made a Studio Albums Ranking video on Dimmu where you can clearly see how I feel about these albums, lol! Thanks or watching and commenting!

Losing Mustis and Vortex was definitely a mistake. Any album after death cult Armageddon was anything but inspiring. For me, I can careless rather or not things are underground, though Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of filth, Satyricon all went to hell after receiving any kind of spotlight. Could it be the labels as well? I'm sure that has some to do with it. Unfortunate.
@PatPosse

@@FrostBite3232 100% I feel the same way, new orchestral arrangements feel "stock". I also don't care if a band is underground or not as long as the music rocks, but you might be onto something.. on my Deicide Albums Ranking video I talk about how they half-assed recorded an album just to get out of a contract deal. They even went ahead and told people during their own concerts not to buy the album!

I've been listening to this band for twenty years. Each of their albums is interesting and unique for me. I understand that the band does not want and will not engage in self-copying of old albums. Нe is growing, developing and wants to declare himself in a new way. I really respect their way and music. They are great professionals. Stop sitting in the past, try to abstract from the old and accept their music in a new way without comparing it with their early work. It is very interesting what they will show in the new album. It's always unexpected, because each of their albums is unique
@PatPosse

That is the entire point of this video, to look back and see what happened to Dimmu Borgir's popularity and status within the metal community. Much like Metallica, a lot of people (including myself) like some of the newer albums and agree with the fact that people, musicians and, in turn, bands and music, change and hopefully evolve/grow. But that doesn't necessarily resonate with the fandom. That being said, I am all for bands that evolve both musically and lyrically (Death comes to mind)! Music taste is always subjective the only thing we can analyze is technicality, composition, aesthetics and of course, acceptance. This is were Dimmu sadly shows a negative result. Thanks for watching and commenting Vlad!!

That's a silly idea, everyone compares certain years of a band, and even their own life. I recognize bands change, I can also recognize when bands pander to something which sells. Been listening to them for two decades as well, well past actually, so that's great for you if you are still a fan boy, but most of us have not and that is okay. You can enjoy the new ones as much as you want, but I am also willing to bet I would not agree with many of your opinions on black metal, so yeah...

I prefer the older albums too, but I still appreciate the newer stuff for what it’s worth. Most singers have to change their style up as their body gets older and they can’t perform vocally like they used to. I like the esoteric theme of Eonian. Always got love for ole’ Dimmu.
@PatPosse

Cool, you definitely have a point there. I didn't care for the direction they took but Eonian is the only album I'm missing from them. Until I actually own it I won't really give it an honest chance. Maybe it's good that I took some time apart from them...

I got into Dimmu Borgir back in 2002 too when I started at university. There I had internet (which I did not have at home) and living with my brother we just got DSL so I spent a good time in online forums talking with metalheads. The first extreme metal bands I listened to were Moonspell, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Emperor. Then Dimmu released PEM, and damn, my ears were really not accustomed to such heaviness and crisp shinny production. But everything was so masterfully done, so catchy and so talented that I still regard that one of the all time best extreme metal albums ever. Dimmu is one of the bands I have been following closely, and yes, I admit they changed their sound a lost, but I'm not a purist that requires all bands to sound the same during their career. On the contrary, my favorite bands vary their style with each release, and each album almost fits perfectly in the time period it was written and recoded. And that's how you should appreciate music, with cultural/historical context in mind. I love their old stuff and love their new stuff. So, I have enjoyed what they have put out, but the last album Eonian is a thorough disappointment. Nothing memorable about it, and all the clean singing are back tracks with choir. There is simply too much choir in the damn album. Like, is it that hard for them to get a good talented session vocalist to do studio work and live shows ? At this point, they could just disband and I would not be upset. There is plenty of great metal elsewhere.

Those were the times man... That's interesting though, most people here have commented great things about Eonian! I guess that's what makes music so great!

I got into black metal because back in 2012 when I was in high school, classmate recommended me to give it a go. I looked some bands up on Google, gave them and listen and Dimmu was the one I liked most. In 2016 I started listening to their older stuff, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Spiritual Black Dimensions in particular. Spiritual Black Dimensions is what made Dimmu easily #1 band for me. Mustis' Keyboards and Vortex's voice in some songs were what I liked most. I was dealing with a lot of depression back then. Listening to that regularly helped me a lot to get on my feet. Since then, I have bought most of their albums (both CD and vinyls), plenty of shirts, and even got a tattoo of band's name with pentagram in between on my arm. Their last two albums were pretty meh compared to 90's albums but I still listen to them regularly. Makes me wish I was born in 70's or 80's so I could have seen their shows while they were in their prime. edit: Video title reminds me of part of the lyrics in their "Ætheric" song. "All rise and fall..."

A few notes: - EDT and SBD were not recorded and produced by Nuclear Blast. EDT was produced by the band and recorded by Peter Tägtgren, while SBD was recorded *and* produced by Peter. Nuclear Blast simply funded (which, of course, was extremely important) and released them. - EDT is the first album to feature Shagrath as lead vocalist, so he didn't change his voice, they changed singer, from Silenoz to him. - It's Spiritual Black Dimensions, not Spiritual Dark Dimensions (this, of course, was probably just an honest mistake on your part) - You say they "stripped all of the keyboards" out of Stormblåst 2005. What do you mean, exactly? There are keyboards in every song! I don't think you go into a lot of detail regarding the actual "rise" and "fall" of this band. After introducing "so what happened?" you go on to talk about an album that you seem to really enjoy. This video seems more like a brief overview of what you like or dislike about each of their records. I'm sorry if I seem overly critical, but it seems to me that you're a huge fan of the band and probably know a lot more about them than you show in this video so there's a lot of potential that you don't use! I'd suggest doing a bit more research so you avoid factual errors, and try to elaborate more on your points to sufficiently answer the question you're posing. You're still getting a like and a subscribe because you seem like a good dude and RU-vid needs more people talking about this *FANTASTIC* band so keep at it, my guy
@PatPosse
@PatPosse 10 месяцев назад
Whats up my dude! Thanks for the elaborate comment. I know it comes from a good place and I appreciate the constructive criticism. Most of these have been addressed in various different comments but it’s mainly because of poor choices of words on my end. Like the producing part I did mean they were funded by NB and that made them sound better, I guess I could have gotten more into detail but felt I needed to keep the video short. Then the keyboard thing I meant they had to strip all the “copied” parts which happened to be my favorite parts of the songs and as far as SBD I must have been nervous (this was one of the first videos in which I talked into the camera this much) but after hearing it a few times I do believe I said “Black” it just came out weird lol. Now as far as the Shaggrath voice thing I meant it changed within the album, I know he became the vocalist on EDT but on the first few songs he uses a different vocal technique, more raw and raspy (for lack of a better word) and then changes it to a more “relaxed” technique which he has kept for years to come. I think I have gotten better as a RU-vidr (or so I hope) and hope you will continue to watch and comment on some of my newer videos! Thanks for watching and commenting my dude! Metal on! 🤘🏻

Everything you're saying is right in the spot. Just want to say. I personally love Dimmu Borgir (stuff till In Sorte Diaboli). If comparing with Cradle Of Filth (another hated band because untrue) Cradle Of Filth still sound kinda interesting despite being commercial these days, but Dimmu sadly isn't. It's something about guitar riffs (lacking catchy riffs) and weird symphonic part. I think a lot of people around the world would be happy if Dimmu returned to the Misanthropia style or even maybe Enthrone style.

Wow, I've never known that they stole the melodies what finally was the reason that the new Stormblast album is without keys. Very interesting. Actually my favorite album still is Spiritual Black Dimensions. In my opinion at that time they had the best constellation of members. I always feel that Astennu and Mustis were a perfect symbiosis adding so much depth to the instrumental parts. Also ICS Vortex added a whole new dimension with his unique singing technique and voice character. Since they're all gone their songs can't reach me not even for 1%.

Oh yeah, it was a whole thing back then... Undeniable although some people still try to defend Dimmu.. They were great melodies, no doubt! SBD Was definitely a turning point and added a whole new depth to the band! I'm still partial to the first three albums (as you can see on my Dimmu Album Rankings video) But I loved Dimmu MKII (SBD, PEM & DCA) Different but Great stuff nonetheless, proving that change on itself is NOT a bad thing! I love the older albums from the 90s for the atmosphere, and I love the 00s albums for the songwriting and technical performances. Still the same band, but different approaches and you could tell they were looking for something different. I actually really like In Sorte Diaboli but I know that album is very hit or miss with some people. Once half of the band left in 2009, I don't think they ever truly recovered. I think some of what they've done in the 2010s, like playing with an entire orchestra on stage at Wacken was cool, but as far as Abrahadabra goes, I just couldn't do it. Eonian I think was a step in a better direction, but still it felt very disjointed and lacked a lot of what I enjoyed about the band. Hopefully we get a new album soon and they go one step further with it. But if not, I'm very happy with those first seven records.

I went through their entire discography like about 7 years ago. Spiritual Black Dimensions is my favorite Dimmu album by far. It just feels like the right balance of synths, heaviness, drama and vocals. The intro to Reptile and the amazing multiple phases of The Insight And The Catharsis are the best parts, with notable mentions: the dramatic piano play of The Promised Future Aeons, and the dreamy conclusion that is Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria. Every single song in there is still worth a listen. Nothing is skippable.

It took a while for it to grow on me but once it did I was hooked. It really showcased Mustis’ ability as a performer and composer while remaining heavy and sort of raw. There's probably a little of this, a little of that... The constant lineup changes probably helped them lose their Original Dark Essence and Epicness but I don't know if new metalheads would approve a band like old Dimmu. I was in highschool (2009-2010) when I started listening. There were 4 music videos I saw online that changed my perspective completely on metal. I started off with 80's slayer and 90's cannibal corpse. Then this one night I was browsing rockabilia for more band shirts and somehow got onto a page that led me to a couple videos. Amon Amarth's pursuit of vikings, Kataklysm's Venom, Behemoth's Alas the Lord is Upon Me, and Dimmu Borgir's the Serpentine Offering. That song off of what was at that time their latest album got me into them. From there I started to progress backward in their discography as my tastes acclimated to the different styles I had just started listening to. After a few years mourning palace became an album that was intrinsic to that time in my life, and still inspires me to this day. My favorite album as a whole is spiritual black dimensions. The melodies and ICS vortex's vocals just made for so many epic's on that album that I could listen to repeat on for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, as you said, In Sorte Diaboli was their last good album. So by the time I got into them they had already released all of their really solid music. I envy you for having been a listener while they were still dropping good albums! Metal on \m/

Hey Kaylan, love these comments! The coolest part about being around as a fan during the PEM and DCA years was the fact that you could look forward to more awesome music and maybe even catch them live. They were definitely spearheading the BM scene influencing bands to polish they sound and aesthetics beyond the corpse paint and battle axes. Fun times for sure!

I actually really agree with this list. Pretty bummed about their later 3 albums. It was definitely in a direction I didn’t care for 🫣 I didn’t hear Dimmu until 2006 so most of what I heard was from their Nuclear Blast albums up to that point, which are my favorites. They got me through a rough time in life. So nice to find others that still appreciate them.

DCA was just a blistering record. I got lost in amongst the soaring melodies, the crushing riffs, and the juxtaposition of the rasping lead vocals versus the gloriously clean sections provided by Vortex. Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse is up there amongst not just my favourite black metal tunes of all time, but my favourite tunes of all time period. The way its arranged still, to this very day, sets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, and causes goosebumps on my arms. I LOVE it.

And I agree with you! I think it was the pinnacle of what they wanted to do "symphonic Black Metal" I think Vortex and Mustis were at their creative high and it just came together perfectly on Death Cult. I discovered this band in May of 1998 when I lived in Memphis, Tennessee. The first song I heard was "Mourning Palace," on a dial up modem. I was able to see them at Ozzfest 2004, here in San Antonio, Texas. As a long time fan, I liked ETD and GSG; however when the SBD album was released in 1999 their sound completely changed with ICS Vortex and Mustis. As Galder and Nick Barker joined the band in the early 2000's for PEM and DCA....Dimmu had the ultimate lineup. When their 2007 album was released even though with Hellhammer on the drums, it didn't appeal to me like the others. The only thing that was hard to get used to at the beginning of the 2010's was the absence of ICS Vortex's clean vocals and Mustis' keyboard playing. Since the SBD album that was a big part of the band's sound and style. I remembered when their 2010 album was released...........I felt this was the FALL of the band. So after an eight year absence of no new studio album releases, the album Eonian(2018) was breath of fresh air and I like the line up. Eonian to me is the RISE of Dimmu and "Lightbringer'' is my favorite song.

As someone who got into Dimmu via OG Stormblast and For All Tid, I have to say my favorite albums are... their first 4, and yes that includes Spiritual Black Dimensions. I can hardly choose between their 90s full lengths, they're all just that good.

@@PatPosse I can hardly wait for your top albums, dude. As a random fact, alongside Lordi, Dimmu Borgir is one of the 2 bands that got me into music, more specifically keyboards and harsh singing. That said, epic jamming you did in that video. I'd be lying if I said I didn't start playing alongside you during Mourning Palace. XD

Well said about Puritanical and Death Cult, for me these would be their 2 strongest albums and best line-up, some might consider it mainstream, I consider it as more of a time where they finally mastered their sound / song writing. Kings of Carnival was the first song I heard from them, and being a musician myself I was blown away by it all, especially the drums and keyboards. I was listening to stuff like Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Cradle of Filth at this time, so extremely fast drumming and black metal weren't new to me, but Dimmu just did it so much better in this era of their existence. After those two albums, the newer stuff was "ok" but nothing compared to the pure talent / aggression we heard from Puritanical and Death Cult.
@PatPosse
@PatPosse Год назад
Thanks man! I agree! A lot of people say I’m against change or “evolution” but they changed drastically from the Enthroned Darkness triumphant days and still I love that sound. Best line up, the most brutal they ever were!!

ISD and DCA have been my favorite albums since i discovered them in highschool. Personally i love their newer stuff, but mostly because im more of a sucker for orchestra and keyboard. Production is definitely superior to older albums too, but they have their charms.

I sold most of what I had with them some 10 years ago. Everything from Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and onwards. I don't mind that album and what come afterwards but I just didn't care for it much. I kept For All Tid and Stormblåst and still listen to them sometimes, because nostalgia perhaps. I also have and enjoy Devils Path which was a short EP they released between Stormblåst and Enthrone.

I started to watch the video thinking how much I don't agree with you, now that I watched... I totally agree with you!! 😂 Dimmu have changed, their image, their atmospheres, some of the key members.. But, I think also in the new albums there are some sparkle, some awesomeness here and there: they are ENORMOUS artists, Shagrath, Silenoz, Galder, they are geniuses and this kind of genius is still reachable in the new works. Not in every single note like Puritanical or Death Cult, of course, but there are still precious gems! Thanks to made me thinking about my idols ❤

I actually got into them through In Sorte Diaboli. I love symphonic music and it was just what I wanted coming from power metal and thrash metal to combine the two. I am not big into raw black metal. I like some Gorgoroth and Mayhem but not a lot. Dimmu Borgir was the perfect mixture. Shame I don't see them around anymore.

That makes total sense. I never got into power metal although I do love Rhapsody 🤘🏻. Have you gotten into Emperor or Dissection yet? How about Old Men’s Child and Thy Serpent? You might enjoy some of the melodies and grandeur of them! 🤘🏻. Dimmu are definitely slacking! Just yesterday I was showing this album to an ex member of my band, a great friend from High School. We grew up together listening to all these bands and he ABSOLUTELY HATED IT! Agree to disagree here.. Thanks for commenting!

@@PatPosse Yes I have no problem with that, DImmu being a old BM band means them going for a new direction will upset the pure BM fans. I'm a fan of BM but also symphonic bands like Septicflesh, Epica, Therion etc. And Dimmu has made essentially a Blackened Symphonic Metal album in Eonian, rather then a Symphonic Black Metal album.
