A Faster Way to Propagate Cuttings

In this video I test the ancient wisdom which says to cut your plant stems on 45 degree angles when trying to propagate and clone plants. Apparently this increased surface area of exposed stem will help the plant absorb more water and maximize rooting success rates. I want to see if this is really the best way to do it, or if we can find other techniques to grow roots faster while propagating plants.

Good to know👍 I think I know where the 45' cut myth comes from: my grandfather was a farmer and he used the 45 ' cut on vertical branches to prevent water stagnation that would rot the branch. I always cutted everything at 45😂 I learned something new thanks 🌱

I believe the 45 deg angle is best for trees as some of the stumps continue to flow out their sap for several days before drying up. So, to avoid stump rot, it's best to cut at an angle.

It could be for grafting instead of cutting but since so much of the farming knowledge was lost after ww1&2 we kind of just copied the easiest to remember. Like how many of us actually know how to change carrots from purple to Orange.

Hi Jimmy, Thanks for performing these experiments on multiple samples, and to come up with visible results, and bursting the myth spread on the internet. Your content about plant propagation is amazing. However, if I may suggest, I would love to share a few things to make your experiential results more accurate. If you do so, trust me, whosoever follows you and copy your techniques will likely have 99.99% result matching yours. 1. For each setup (honey, cinnamon, vinegar, saliva, aloe vera and water), increase the number of samples to 7 or 10. So even if your few cuttings get spoiled or rotted, you will still have more than five valid / live samples. At the end of the experiment record the outcomes or results. However, the results we achieved can be due to some random variables influencing the overall outcome. To rule out their contribution, repeat the experiment, which will validate the results. 2. Validation of results: conduct the experiment with the same setup and with the same number of samplings, record all the findings and outcomes. Now based on these two set of data, obtained separately with a time gap, you should have your final conclusion about each setup. These conclusions will have more reliability due to its repeatable and predictable nature. And your audience will also witness and enjoy the same results and benefits. Thank you for the scientific approach, I've been doing 45 with rooting hormone cuz that's how I was taught but I always wondered if there was a better way. Now I know there is! 90° +split. Now I wanna try those with honey, cinnamon and a blend of both!

There was one technique you missed that I wish you could have covered. And that's scraping the outer cell wall - rather than just scoring it. I've been doing this for the better part of 4 years now and have found it to be the most successful. Paired with either a 45 degree cut or 90 degree, I've found it works with about 85-90% efficacy.

I love your comparisons. I don't know why anyone else makes videos on these subjects: yours are amazingly helpful and clear. Tomatoes are probably the easiest plant to propagate because the stems are covered in hairs that when under water for a couple weeks will all make roots. I'd like to see the test done on a plant that relies on the cut point or the nodes. Also putting tiny cuts into the stems can help propagate clones. Of course there is rooting hormone you can buy also.

Races with other plants are on the way! I don’t think tomatoes’ ability to propagate quickly invalidates the findings though. But I also agree larger samples are needed. More to come!

Good video idea…would like to see this on a plant that doesn’t have the ability to root on all the surface of the stalk like to a tomato plants does. Maybe something like a coleus or hydrangea where they root from a node.

Watching this while working on cuttings to clone. Thank you for this video! I wanted to do the same comparisons & you saved me the time of doing so. Definitely worth the like and subscribe. I had been doing the super angle with occasional scoring or splitting. Now I will mainly use 90 degrees & split. Have you done a race with and without trimmed leaves? I nip the tips of the leaves left on the cuttings. My logic is this aids in focusing the plant resources into roots by causing a bit of foliage stress.

I’ve done some cannabis races with different amounts of leaves. Didn’t try cutting into the leaves though. I’ve also raced a handful of DIY rooting agents. The only issue with the split technique is not damaging the stem when inserting into the cube or rooter plugs. What i found that worked is having 2 trays stacked but with a 1inch gap between the 2. Add 2-3 cups of water to the floor, place the first tray, then the 2nd with the cuttings. Do not try and harden until you have full roots which then you put into a separate dome to allow harding to occur.

Hi thanks for awesome video I found with tomatoes plants it dose not matter how you cut them they form little bubbles on the stem 'ready for roots to come out if left growing on the ground roots will come out everywhere dis is what I know but I will keep in mine 90 degree slit thank for the experience

The 4-splits are interesting. How about a much, much shallower cut? And even drill a small hole into the bottom of the stem to increase surface area that way? Is what you just did hydroponic rooting?

Interesting experiment. Only thing is tomatoes easily grow roots from the fine hair on the stem no matter the cut. Try these techniques again on harder wood plants like roses, citrus, or jasmine.

No doubt about tomatoes being easier. I’ve tried on multiple occasions to clone pepper plants from experimenting with cloning for the past year but so far I’ve only had luck cloning a few pepper plants.

Oh this is interesting, I have always wondered and tried a few of these myself. I just wonder tho if over time the split technique could make the plant more susceptible to infection, maybe not if your keeping it in a hydroponics setting but I’m thinking for those of us who try to root a variety of cuttings and then plant in soil 🤔

My guess was that a 45 through a NODE would expose the widest range of cell types to stress. Those in the best position or should I say condition to make roots would be stimulated to do so. FYI In my opinion if I can get ANY root formation I am 99% assured of success. But I have never done an experiment such as this one... did I miss it or did he give any attention to nodes?

I would assume that the greater the angle, the more water it could suck up, the less it would need to put out roots to drink. I always thought 45 degrees was only for cut flowers in arrangements to extend their life.

Hi there, have you or can you test the theory of shaving (couple shaves) the lower end (about an inch or so) of the cuttings to see if its better than the split method? I was told it's the best method for rooting. Much appreciated

I just recently published a video showing a split vs 45 experiment with a variety of plants. I tried peppers, basil and sage in addition to the tomatoes. I believe cutting the stems on a 45 degree doesn't help. I've rooted many clones before and never seen roots pop out of the bottom cut. Usually it's on the nodes first then the stem. Just cut on a straight line

I don’t propagate them that long. I move into a reservoir with nutrients or soil when roots are an inch or two long. I’ve seen no impact later in the plants life as a result of the split

They’re overheating. Likely too hot or too close to light source. Maybe not enough air flow.

He picked the wrong plant to test. Tomato stems (and other plants like cucumbers) are covered in hairs so when they naturally fall over the hairs can put out more roots. I cut my cannabis clones on a 45 then put tiny slices in the stem. Make sure your cutting has at least 2 nodes and trim any fan leaves so the energy of the plant will go into rooting.

For the scored trials I made small cuts into the stem for the bottom inch or so. The idea being maybe these cuts would let water in and that would help. The cuts are hard to see in the set up videos but they open up a bit in the results.

I think this specific comparison study is one that cannot be done accurately on tomato cuttings. Tomato plants, unlike most other plants, has the ability to grow roots directly through the epidermis of the stem rather than preferring on growing them at points where the ground tissues or inner part of the stem has least resistance by stem walls, like through a scar in the stem. Therefore, the surface area theory and some other methods here sort of become pointless. While the results in this video may hold true, this experience remains fallible due to being done on tomato cuttings. Thanks anyway.
