Flamme was (effectively) Serie’s Fern, and receiving her will was getting a message that her student was dead. Had achieved her dream and wanted her teacher to still be a part of it, but was no longer in the world.
Serie is full of shit, I love her. She keeps saying she only raised Flamme on a whim and talking shit about her to Frieren, but at the same time she's remembering a smiling baby Flamme holding her hand as they walk together, she knows which was Flamme's favorite spell and talks about it with fondness even if she's giving her shit for it, and even though she refused to honor her will at first here she is one thousand years later doing exactly what she asked even after the Demon King is dead.
She legit thougt about it for a thousand years, then Frieren killed the demon king and she was like ''Alright, I will do what my student asked, her other plan worked after all '' or something like this XD
She deadass said in the flashback that elves can afford to wait a millennium before making a decision, and BOOM exactly a millennium after she's now teaching humans magic LMAO
I kinda love the dynamic between Serie and Frieren. They are both each other’s opposites but also each other’s mirrors. I think the reason they hate each other is deeper than just philosophical differences, I think they remind each other of aspects of themselves that neither of them are willing to acknowledge. Serie is martial, she believe magic should belong to a privileged few who seek to prove their prowess through challenging each other. Frieren on the other hand believes magic should exist for magic’s sake, that everyone should practice it and enjoy it merely because it’s fun and beautiful. They have such opposing world views and yet…Why is the warrior, the MARTIAL mage Serie…the one who’s title is “the living Grimoire”, and the carefree, “magic for the sake of magic” Frieren is the one who’s titled “the slayer”. For someone who’s supposed to only see magic as a weapon of war, Serie is the one who spends more time teaching people magic than Frieren. For someone who thinks magic should be enjoyed for the sake of learning, Frieren spends more time killing demons than Serie does. Serie claims magic should be open to a select few, yet Serie has FAR more apprentices than Frieren and even allows ANYONE to apply for the exams. Whereas Frieren only ever takes on ONE apprentice, and one whose caliber is far above that of any Serie has ever trained in terms of potential. An apprentice by the way, who’s quickly earning a reputation for being a remarkably dangerous duelist. For all their willingness to criticize one another’s beliefs, they are each living lives closer to the other’s ideals
That's a very good observation, didn't consider that before. In this aspect, it's really interesting seeing Flamme who is in many ways the one standing in between them, sharing in both qualities.
Something subtle that I loved this episode was the end of the Serie and Frieren conversation. Serie looks away from the light of the sun representing the bright future for humankind. In contrast, Frieren steps forward and basks in it. This adaptation is just top tier all across the board.
Serie: "magic should be special, it was dumb for Flamme to ask me to guide humanity's pursuit of magic" also Serie, is the leader of the largest mage society in the world to popularize magic when almost all mages were killed by demons. Serie is just Frieren but older.
To be fair,Seire did fulfill flamme's dream to take over to help humans. She just spent a thousand years to make the decision. You know ,short time for her.
yup, she has lived since the era that the creation goddess created the world. So, for her, a thousand years to think and decide is just a "mere 1000 ys"
serie is not a bad person, it just takes "TIME" to understand the true words behind her lies. she was shook when frieren told her flamme died, proceeds to put up a front. she shitttalks flamme yet was holding her hand endearingly in the flashback and reminiscing about young flamme with a smile, declines her will..........proceeds to do it anyways😅
Nah, I am actually pretty damn sure, Flamme was more like Fern, than even Frieren is aware, cause Serie seems like the kind of bookworm, that would forget how to use her nose 😂
11:40 Don't let Serie fool you. When she heard Freiren said "Flamme's will", Serie was shocked for a moment but covered up her reaction quickly. She loves her little Flamme even though she pretends not to. 16:50 That joke is actually funny. Really!!!
Serie says she only trained her on a whim yet she remembers much about her (and her other apprentices) but she also ends up fulfilling Flamme's request in her will.
I remember reading a comment around the time ep 7 aired that found it poetic that Flamme is named that considering she's like Prometheus, gifting fire (knowledge, power) to humanity. Edit: An elf walks into a bar. Everyone groans.
It's like Himmel flirting with Frieren and her taking 50 years to realize. She operates on such an extended timeline she ends up missing things until it's too late
I can't really blame Serie on how she thinks about Flamme. The difference in life-span can't really be comparable, and even if she had formed a relationship with a Human, it's just a speck in her life.
zoltrak was around for 80 years. most elves did not hear about it yet. another good point is how seire is also responsible for humans learning magic. she was flame´s master and indirectly made everything possible... and she decided to take the lead after becoming the head of the magic association. So, to some extent, she also appreciated what flame did.
But she only teach first class mages.. That's why first class mage exam is very brutal.. So she still stands with her word that magic should be special..
So the memory of Flamme runs into the rising sun and disappears, heralding the dawn of a new age of magic. Serie looks into the sun, and then away from it to look back, and gives Frieren a warning of danger (notably she is not in any way concerned for herself. It is Frieren she is worried for). Frieren, however, smiles and walks past Serie, facing the sun, and thinks only of the wonder and opportunity the new era will bring.
It's an episode that celebrates the short and finite nature of human life. Because our lives are short, we can't procrastinate for long at the crossroads of big decisions, we have to make choices and move forward quickly. Because there is death, we can feel the preciousness of life, we can develop, and we can cherish our family and friends.
Serie surely has a sharp tongue. But you'll see later, her love for her students is unexpectedly deep. Deep down, she loves her students and hasn't forgotten Flamme too.
Serie is making me cry. She keeps talking shit about Flamme but she's remembering her in perfect clarity, girl your mask of indifference is failing big time 🥲. And I love that I keep hearing Killua every time she speaks 😇
The chalk drawing of the battle plan during this episode was true to the final scenario that killed the Frieren clone. According to the drawing when the fight starts, Fern just has to scramble and hide near the nearest column and stay there while Frieren battles the clone and brings it to a spot were Frieren would be between the clone and Fern who is hiding behind the column. As soon as Fern sees that the clone is where she is supposed to be that is her cue to blast her with Frieren blocking the clones view of Fern below and of course without the clone detecting such a blast of full powered zoltraak coming her way since her mana detection is down during that instant as it is also casting a slightly slower spell of its own towards Frieren who sees the clones attack coming miles away because she is it and it is her. lol! Nice touch as always on the little things! Awesome anime!😊
It's interesting how many parallels they're painting between Serie/Flamme and Frieren/Fern. If those keep holding up, Fern could be the next great mage. Who knows wtf she could be capable of.
Serie sees memories as the present, so when she was holding little flame's hand, she literally WAS holding the past flamme's hand, hence why she distances her self to her disciples, the loss of a loved one
Little Flamme's time was probably just a day or two ago with Serie. So she remember's everything. Those scene is so precious. They introduced Flamme to us in the first few episodes as this powerful Human mage. To see her here as an innocent kid running around and playing with flowers all the while knowing we are only seeing this memory because she had passed away. 😢
I like your videos. I use them as my educational materials. I'm looking forward to next episode of Frieren.❤ From a Japanese person who has been studying English.
@@FreshestAnime No not at all. Maybe, I'm used to such words. Your English is so clear for me that I can easily learn "real English" and watch the reactions of the people overseas such as you. Also, Frieren is my favorite anime!! so I am glad to be able to know what the people overseas think about Frieren. Sorry my strange English.
We can see how human change the perspective of elves.. Flamme to serie Flamme and himmel to frieren In manga serie actually cherish flamme, it just she not showing it. Even she smile when flamme smiling when flamme holding her hand
Fren has a talent for conseal her own magic making it almost impossible to detect and quickdraw magic with the fastest speed, she's like perfect assassin magicians.
Considering what Richter did to her & Kanne in the previous test, Lawine had every right to all that attitude she was showing to him. Flamme uniting humanity to finally learning magic- this is probably the origin of that necklace Frieren has to show her magic rank. Only a handful of people in the world probably recognize it at this point. 😅
1:50 Yep, thats a smile. 😁 Also, PLEASE YOU COULD HAVE GIVEN A FEW SECONDS MORE TO HIMMEL! I wanted to see him in action! Just a little bit. Just cut the showing them voicelessly talk part. 😐
"weak times create weak people. Hard times create strong people". I think THIS is both why Serie didn't want herself to defeat the demon king AND why she does this first-class mage exam. The demon king being alive, it WILL create an era in which strong people are gonna have to step up. Flamme allowing everyone to learn magic would make this idea non existent anymore, since almost every person would be able to learn magic. I understand due to Serie's behavior and rudeness, some people might not like her, but that doesn't mean she is not important. Deep inside, she cares 🤣 even tho i give all credits to Flamme, she wouldn't be nothing without Serie. Actually all this era of magic wouldn't probably exist. In the end, it's the basic "i don't like a character that don't like the MC" thing. Serie and Frieren simply think different. In the end they're all on the same side of the story (against the demons)
It’s a small spoiler, but this doesn’t make sense considering Serie started doing this just 50 years ago. She’s sad that her best living apprentice , the very first ‘first class’ mage will ‘never get to fight any legendary battles, for an example against Frieren, even if it’s a battle he could win’. The Demon King’s dead, it’s a peaceful era right now
So, there's this suspicion I've had since watching this ep the first time. Lawine knew from the start about Spiegel and what it could do, and she probably told Kanne too. I think Kanne lied when she said they didn't notice Frieren and Fern leaving. I think Lawine and Kanne were hoping the other teams were going to leave before Frieren so they could try to convince Frieren NOT to enter the dungeon to prevent Spiegel from creating the ultimate final boss. That's why Kanne looked so crestfallen and scared when they finally went in.
I am so suprised that many reactors don't get the point that Serie is actually a tsundere and cares Flamme very much (She said she trained Flamme on a whim but remembers everything about Flamme and fulfill her last will)
The magic frieren uses is so strong that defensive magic dosent work against it. Thats why fern and frieren dogdes or frieren cancel it with same Power. A normal mage could never handle such a battle. Spells like this also consume a lot of mana. If you remember denken was empty after his Flame Tornado and he is actually pretty strong. So even if they tried a big Team battle, it would be like frieren said. Most of them would just die
I'm pretty sure that's ancient elf magic. The kind of thing no human mage would learn because it takes too long and too much mana. Thats so cool to see some !
Serie is basically like Frieren.. she 'raise' Flamme while Frieren 'raise' Fern.. she might seems like it doesn't bother her tht Flamme is dead, but I think she actually felt heartache without her notice when Frieren said that she's gone.. Serie might have different vision for magic and stuff from Frieren, but remember she's much older than Frieren.. Something just in my mind really think that Serie not that 'bad'/'evil' as we thought.. Ouh well, it just a little piece of my mind 😅 *Plus: Serie keep what Flamme said about the human with magic. The first class mage shit is developing recently, well, elf time is much slower than humane society of time, the mage class is starting about 50-60 years ago. So much time ape between Flamme's death and the starter of that.. Imagine if between that hundreds years gap is actually how Serie grieving and processing about Flamme's death..
いつも楽しく見ています。 I enjoy your video every week, thank you! And I try to wtite my point of view, forgive my English mistakes. I would try to observe what Serie did, because she is a elf as same as Friern, it means they think very slow and careless, usually don't think deeply unlike human. When she talked with Friren, she had changed her mind very quick, once "go home", after understanding Flamme knew her character, "I will tell you about Flamme" additioned a excuse "we have a lot of time" for avoiding to be rejected it by Friren. That is unnatural switching if thery were humanbeings. However she does not understand why she wanted to tell the past story Friren. In Japanese version lines she called Flamme "あの子" many times, "あの子" is a pronoun which is used only for a child and her voice seemed to feel attachment very much-loved as a elf. From these reasons I believe she loves Flamme but she doesn't recognise herself, like Friren did not feel anything unitl Himmel's death. In fact she has been kept imperial mages for thousand years, I think that why she saw Friren's smiling face for long time( a few seconds?) talking "That is exciting, right?", possibly she felt something like this girl is raised by Flamme... then she decided to do what Flamme's will, tearing her will's paper though, but of curse without thinking anything.
I think, Serie love giving is something like tough love she diss her own pupil in every corner possible, but she fondly remember all of their time together, and with a smile too. Thats just how harsh but full of loving nature teacher's do. Because the master always wish to see their students doing great things
This show is so so good man. And everything i hear from manga readers implied that the best arcs are still to come. Actually, last i heard people discuss the current/upcomming arc seems to be the best one yet. So we're still far from the peak of the peak that is this series. I don't know if i'm gonna be able to keep myself from binging the manga once episode 28 finishes. I wanna experience this whole story in my favourite medium (animation) but I love this world and these characters so much that i need to know what else is gonna happen
Serie might say those harsh words but in reality she does care a lot about her students… she’s just sad and angry that that they can’t be with her till the end because humans lifespan is only a speck compared to elves. I think one of her student mentioned that Serie doesn’t forget the names of her students including those who died already, she remembers them that’s why she’s kinda bitter…
"I keep wanting to pause, everything is so interesting". Said nobody ever in the history of watching a great show. Lol. I can't imagine ever pause during hype or interesting things in an epic show.
Probably never heard of the term "pause and reflect." I pause so that way I have time to reflect otherwise I am reflecting while the content continues and then missing what follows which is likely something else I would consider "interesting" as "everything is so interesting."
@@FreshestAnime lol no, and I know its different on Twitch, but when I am watching hype, I have to keep watching. At the end I have infinite time to reflect.
Flamme = Fern and Serie = Frieren... Their relationship are too similar and at some point, that really foreshadows how great will Fern be in the near future... Serie raising Flamme on a "whim" but I think deep inside she loved her as her daughter at some point and then Flamme taking Frieren in to help master her magic to defeat the Demons and the Demon King at that time and now Frieren with Fern... I'm so looking forward to the prequel story of this show
I notice Frieren's clone was able to teleport from point A to point B similar to Laufen's Jilwer spell. This means Frieren could use that spell all along, but she doesn't see the need to, except for maybe the time when she fought Denken.
A few episodes ago I said this was the best episode, but I was wrong. There are always episodes that get better and better. For me, this is definitely the best anime this season.
"By the end of the show's entirety, it's entire run [...] it might go down as a masterpiece" I'm so excited to tell you that this series has YET to drop the ball even a little bit at any point at all, literally 65 chapters later after the end of this arc. At this point, the fall-off would have to be historic for it not to end up a masterpiece.
Serie's actions are the opposite of what she says. She is a tsundere lol, she says that she only raised flamme on a whim but deep inside she loves all her students and i 100% believe that she was quite devastated when she heard of flamme's death. She looks over her students like they are her own children. Serie always talks shit about flamme and declines whatever flamme wants her to do but after a while she does it herself anyway. Look at the exam grounds when the third exam comes up, you'll know that she liked flamme a lot when you see the place.
The juxtaposition in the flashback with Serie is actually a triple juxtaposition. Because Frieren at this point was still very young for an elf. Definitely less than 1000 years old and very likely less than 500 years old. So we have Flamme, a human who lived probably a full human lifespan of 75-85 years, Serie, who is already thousands of years old, to whom Flamme’s life has been just a blip, and Frieren, who is probably only a couple hundred years old, for whom her time with Flamme still constitutes a significant fraction of her life experience, who hasn’t yet or is only just beginning to experience and grasp the implications of what her elven lifespan will entail for her in terms of relationships with humans.
1:50 Makes the Mona Lisa smile look like a full-toothed grin... On my (only) Full HD TV the last two vertical pairs of pixels in the smile on Frieren's left side move up one row.
She's so very proud of raising that lil mage to become her killer, it's so cute ❤ Also, that joke gave me a good chuckle. I could see it construct in your head and the bland punchline worth it 😂 Too bad it's only applicable at this very exact moment in history, as nobody else will remember that elves can take a hundred years to make a decision, so yeah, bask in the comedic glory
10:10 I think that Frieren just has so damn much mana that it can't be fully suppressed. Fern, while having a lot of mana, can more easily suppress her mana without leakage.
Serie actually cares about Flamme, though she always speaks shit about her. Remember Flamme fav spell is creating a flower field, next episode will show that serie actually cares
So weird to see him vibing to this anime while donning full gopnik style set. Well, only missing the silly leather cap on the head, beer bottle in one hand and sunflower seeds bag in the other.
Flamme predicted that at some point Frieren would want to speak with the dead. There’s also that moment when she makes Serie look away and admit that she kind of likes the struggle of fighting the Demon King’s army. I believe she has this tendency of knowing the people (maybe just the elves?) around her more than they know themselves, to the point that she can predict some of their reactions. Frieren found that annoying earlier in the series, so maybe it was something she did quite often. There’s also that moment when Frieren was surprised Fern and Himmel knew what dessert she wanted. Maybe elves change so little and slow that at some point their actions become extremely predictable to humans. I bet Flamme knew Serie would come around and help humanity learn magic, eventually.
if Fern and Frieren did take care of it themselves either way i think it was a bad idea to just tell everyone present her weakness and i think people missunderstand Serie, i think she was seriously hurt by flamme dying, she just won't show it because she's an elf and it was after all only a speck of her lifetime, if she didn't care she wouldn't remember Flamme and her favorite spell
3:35 "SEE I SAID THEY SHOULD WORK TOGETHER BUT NOOOO" 4:50 "Yeah they probably felt like they couldn't work together" This man is a pancake the way he's flipping.
In the end the others just need to slow down the replicas ... and when Frieren and Fern are done, the doors open and Gatling-Fern just comes out like "What's up Motherf*ckers!?" and blasts them all. 🤣 Amazing thought ... too bad it'll surely play out differently. XD also: We haven't seen THAT much of Flamme ... but why does this flashback to smoll Flamme hit so hard when they talk about this flower spell? XD
I think if they kill the Spiegel all the clones will disappear. Flamme rarely gets screen time but whenever she gets the episode is always masterpiece.
