Serie pretends to be much more of a hardass than she actually is. She's here talking shit about Flamme to Frieren just as she remembers walking with baby Flamme holding her hand. And for all that she complained about Flamme's will and told Frieren she refused to comply, she's literally doing what Flamme asked of her in the present and Frieren is taking her test.

Serie tries hard to hide her emotions behind her words. Hopefully we will see more of this this season.

Just like Frieren (even moreso than Frieren) as a long lived Elf Serie has to come to terms with outliving all the humans she meets and grows attached to. Frieren coped, initially, by being emotionally detached and withdrawn. Serie copes by pretending outwardly not to care.
@bossl6982
@bossl6982 6 месяцев назад
For all this talk about how Elves basically have an eternity it's probably difficult for Serie to rationalize how such a short period of her life raising Flamme could cause such a big emotional impact. So logically Serie knows it doesn't make sense but clearly emotionally she very much cares about Flamme and her passing.

Almost ironic that Serie ended up doing almost exactly as Flamme asked, after being so adamantly against it. And the catalyst for that change could well have been the defeat of the Demon King by Himmel and Frieren's team. Serie could not visualize herself living in a peaceful era, but once that peaceful era was thrust upon her by the work of others, she had to change to accommodate it, even in spite of herself.

It's a bit sad that most American reactors do not detect the full extent of Serie's sadness in the flashback scene. They fail to catch the half-second pause when she heard that Flamme died, the fact that she dodged Frieren's question of whether she's sad, the walk where her memory of the little Flamme was all over the place, the time that she said Flamme's dream was disgusting/displeasing but with a smile, and those occasional signs of sadness in her eyes when she talked in the walk. Serie talked about Flamme's life achievements like a proud parent talking about their kid. She said she only trained Flamme on a whim but she remembered her favorite spell and her dream, everything about her. Just a side note: that sentence "but humans cannot afford to delay" in original Japanese was "but those children cannot afford to delay". Serie just didn't want to admit that Flamme's death hit her hard. She was upset with Flamme's will, like an estranged parent upset about her kid not having visited her during life at all but only left a bunch of unpaid debts for her to settle. But she missed Flamme anyway. That walk and that talk was Serie's way of dealing with the impact of Flamme's death. She didn't want to be alone so she invited Frieren even though they didn't share the same goals and didn't get along. And in a way, the final parts of the talk she was admitting that her little girl was right about her dream. Watch it again focusing on Serie's perspective and you will see much more than just her being a cold gatekeeper of magic. Serie may have torn up Flamme's will, but 1000 years later she was doing her disciple's wishes anyway.

Spot on! The emotional nature of elves in this show is so well written - the disconnect to humans is so clear yet so beautifully and painfully bridged nonetheless.
@themushroominside6540
@themushroominside6540 5 месяцев назад
Serie's reaction initally seems distant and cold but in reality they are tender yet bittersweet. All these harsh words used in an endearing manner, there is a reason why she never forgets the favorite spells of her apprentices no matter who they were, for they are all still her children. Living such a long life practically forces elves to be cold and seemingly didetached, since stones will weather away into dust faster than they have the time to contemplate, things can be held off for millennia with zero consequence, but humans are different with such comparatively short lives and therefore boundless ambition, any human that manages to reach the heart of an elf, leaves a permanent mark. When the border between eternity and the instantenous dissolve.

22:06 nooo don't do my girl Serie like that 💔 I think you missed the point of her character. Serie doesn't have anything against humans and she doesn't have any particular feelings about elves either. Remember, Serie FOUNDED the continental magic association and she rewards any mages who she deems worth with any spell of their choice. Serie's "gatekeep" idea is not based on race, it's based on TALENT. She doesn't want to teach magic to people without the talent for it. She dislikes that idea, because she thinks of magic as something that should be special. She's also a big tsundere, she said flamme was only an apprentice she raised on a whim, but you can see during her walk with Frieren how she starts reminiscing about the times when she used to talk around holding hands with little flamme, and she tells frieren about flamme's favorite spell and her childhood dreams. As much as she tried to hide it, deep down she cared for flamme a lot.

24:00 Flamme sending Frieren to deliver the will to Serie had nothing to do with "wanting to shove it on her face" or anything like that, also Flamme wasn't trying to tell Serie "Frieren will be the one to do it" either. As you know, Frieren didn't train any imperial mages or anything like that, she remained hidden from the world for centuries and centuries until himmel came for her. Flamme simply wished to tell her master that her dream came true, and Frieren ended up being the one to deliver it.

Serie came off as cold hearing about flamme’s death but the flash backs of her with young flamme make me think she’s more upset than she’s willing to show. Flamme was basically her daughter but she KNEW with 100% certainly she would outlive her. She’d probably be steeling herself against it for a long time. She has to keep repeating to herself that “I only trained her on a whim”. I almost wonder if she thinks about flamme the way Frieren thinks about Himmel, worrying about the things she didn’t appreciate in the moment. And this also must be something on Frieren’s mind with Fern. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Frieren will outlive Fern.

I feel like you missed the point with the whole Serie interaction, we know she does exactly as Flamme asks, we've seen that all human mages revere her and this whole first class mage exam is under her control. We also see she's not as indifferent as she pretends to be towards Flamme's death in how she's remembering her as a child and holding her hand. Also I think it's more like she's stating a fact about the ascendence of humanities' mages, she doesn't want to prevent it (which she probably could if we're honest). Nice reaction as always.

I think I missed it a bit too, in a way she did what flamme asked in her own way yes, I was too busy thinking about Himmel and frieren’s bond when he came up with the dungeon aspect, and I got quite scared with the whole killing thing came into play about fern. It feels like foreshadowing to me 🥲 anyways, you’re totally right. I think Serie may just need a couple more thousand years to catch up to frierens emotional maturity. Even though she’s so so so much older. I think it’s because Serie kind of isolates herself in that cavern and never got/gets to learn about emotions
@davidstanley1453
@davidstanley1453 6 месяцев назад
@@farohreacts Yeah that foreshadowing definitely worries me too, but at the same time I can't imagine (yet) a situation where Fern would harm Frieren. I think it's just that the two elves are totally different personality-wise Serie seems to thrive on excitement and chaos while Frieren is much more placid and relaxed, she lets curiosity lead her on. It was the same with Kraft choosing his religion, the really old elves all seem to choose a different way to continue to exist. We'll see how it goes but this is by far Anime of the year for me

Frieren had a different task from Flamme, namely to stay humble and hidden until the time would come for her to defeat the Demon King. She did help humanity afterwards though, by reverse-engineering Zoltraak aka ordinary offensive magic as well as the defensive shield that nowadays every mage uses. As for Serie... she just said it in the episode, she may need a century or two to think about something... or maybe a millennium. And it indeed took her 1000 years before she decided to do what Flamme asked her to. Her constant reminder that taking Flamme in as a student was just "a whim" sounds more like her coping with the death of her student. Her harsh words and her actions don't match. She remembers everything about Flamme vividly, including how they used to hold hands and how Flamme told her master about her dream. And Flamme knew her master well, too. It is honestly sad.

she doesn't want humans to be the Corsa Franca(world/standard race) of the world as that means she will have to conform to the comparatively extreme high speed life-style of humans, she likes the fact that she can just forget about her problems as she can just fix them eventually or simply wait them out. She thinks that this will be a fundemental change to her already perfect life. And when you feel like you're at the peak it can feel like going any other direction is just going down.

@@fiat1314 I don't believe it's elitism, prejudice, or the reasoning you listed as much as I think it's reasonable and logical thought and concern for the future. I find it hard to disagree with Serie when it comes to humans and magic. If it weren't for the need to defeat the Demon King the idea of humans becoming so powerful within their short lifespans, driven by quick, abrupt/rash & overly emotional decisions there is valid reason for fear. Not just for elves but the entire world. IMO it's unrealistic to pretend the humans of this world are any better than the humans of ours meaning things like hatred, prejudice, war, power and greed are all present as well. There's no reason to believe that humans there would make the world any less ugly than our world is. We've seen signs of evil spread throughout this anime from murderers to bandits, war between nations and struggles for power over both might and money. Ever notice that humans kinda if suck in every reality? Even imagined ones.

Serie is a very interesting character to me, I feel like she’s teetering on being the future big villain of the show but not really. She has her gatekeeping “I’m better than all of you” personality but she clearly cares about her human apprentices such as flamme, and she doesn’t act like an extremist on her beliefs in general, not yet anyway. She knows humans are very capable and powerful BECAUSE of their short lifespan, and offhandedly acknowledges it as a strength and not a weakness, yet at the same time she does seem to somewhat look down on them. She really is a mage of a bygone era, this era of peace is clearly not suiting her well, while frieren is thriving in it.

It's kinda ironic when people think that sirie is a warmonger, her name "sirie" means "peaceful victory"/"powerful silent". A powerfull sillent really fits her character, sirie is a very OP mage but also she was silent to talk about her feelings. When flamme's death, she trully sad about that news, she even imagine flamme still playing around her, grab her hand, and talk about her dreams to frieren. But at the same time she doesnt know how to express those feelings, OR she doesnt want people to know her true feelings by hiding it from other people. A meaning of a peacefull victory would be a mystery for now, maybe it'll be discovered the meanings of it when the newest arc of the manga ends, spoiler about the latest arc: frieren, fern, stark, sense, ubel, land, a spy and the other one 1st class mage on the mission to protect sirie from the Assassination.

only way to look at Serie is that she is not a bad elf. And from that you can understand everything about her. She is not gatekeeping, she just thought its waste of time. Frieren was like that too, she thought a lot of things are a waste of time and that's why she stayed alone in that hut for so long... she wasn't trying to honor Flammes wish of staying low. It also parallels Seins situation. And it also parallels with a lot of situations IRL, lots of people lock themselves to their room and to society. In Japanese culture those people are considered "Hikikomori". I suggest you Look it up - its both sad and eye opening to our current world. From that you could contrast that to Serie, She probably will learn the more she connects with humans. Her "Any grimoire you wish" is kind of honoring Flammes wish, she seems to have changed her mind about humans. It only took her a thousand years... you can say the same with Frieren. 🤭

The line about Zoltraak being around since Fern was born, is meant to reference the ease of acquiring tech-savvy-ness for each successive generation IRL. The earlier in our lifetimes that we are exposed to the cognitive frameworks required to easily use computers, iphones, tablets, etc, the more instinctive it is. I used to teach using Microsoft Office at an Adult Education Center in my city, and older students (as in Baby Boomers, elder Gen X) needed to understand more basic, Operating System paradigms first, like folder directories, cut/copy/paste, dragging items, etc. So they had to expend mental effort for that stuff, whereas folks our age (Millennials, Zoomers) intuitively understand the paradigm much faster and it's almost reflexive for us.

When it comes to Serie, it is important to judge by her actions, rather than her words. Like Kraft, Serie is beyond ancient (she comes from the Mythical Era when humans were just a barbaric tribe), far older than Frieren. She has immense pride and being so old, she is set in her ways. There was no way her pride would allow her to admit that she cared about Flamme to Frieren's face of all people. But if you watch her expressions, you can notice the stricken pause as Frieren delivers the news, right before she puts up the haughty mask. After Frieren mentions Flamme just wanted to have her know her dream came true, Serie asks Frieren (whom she dislikes but who is also her sole connection to Flamme), to walk with her. She spends the walk reminiscing about the "apprentice she taught on a whim" but reveals that she essentially raised her like a daughter from an early age. By saying it would be either the Demon King or a Human mage to kill Frieren, Serie shows how much she respects mankind. You need to note these subtle details to realize that Serie spends most of the flashback lying to Frieren and to herself. I'll also add: Serie gatekeeps not because she hates humans and wants elven supremacy (elves are a lost race anyway), but because she believes magic to be something precious and special that should be treated with utmost respect, not something to be randomly taught to the talentless. You should note that it is "warlike" Serie and not the "peaceful" Frieren that is known as the "Living Grimoire" that brought magic to humanity (through her apprentice) and now teaches humans magic thousand years later. The "peaceful" Frieren was only known as the "Undertaker/Slayer" and she lived alone in a forest for a millennium, caring nothing about humanity or its magic - until meeting Himmel changed her. Serie and Frieren are more alike than they would ever admit, which is why they dislike each other so much - they hate the part of themselves they see in each other. Unlike the tsundere Serie, Frieren is simply more blunt and honest with her thoughts, that's all.

the vibe i get from serie is that she says one thing but feels/does the otherway. when she talks about flamme she slightly bad mouths her but in the flashback she was holding young flammes hand almost in an endearing motherly way. she declined flammes will, but didn't the mage test makers said that serie has helped with humanity's magic.

Absolute epic episode. And not only the Frieren vs Frieren fight, but also the whole conversation with Serie at the end. As you seem to cry every time Himmel is around, I, myself, always somehow get emotional in every Flamme Flashback. Those moments are so revealing to the overall story. Btw, you sometimes draw strange conclusions, not everything in this show is about Himmel, you know 😉

frieren is actually a mirror reflection of serie. the way its shown, serie beginning to reflect after learning of flammes death and ultimately starting the assocation for first class mages (her way of carrying out the training flamme desires without breaking her own principle of not training untalented people) is nearly identical to how frieren was so cold until she began reflecting on himmels death and she began to desire to learn about and get to know humans. they are extremely similar characters, we just havent had 24 episodes to endear ourselves to serie so she seems like much more of a emotionless asshole lol

I think it's interesting, this eps explicitly tells how different elf and demon, because both seems lack emotions, demon don't have the concept of emotion that tied to other people, basically us to chicken, for example, just food. But elves do have. They just need more time to realize. Serie, altho her words are harsh, and always repeated over and over, Flamme is "trained on a whim student", still manage to remember all her details. When Frieren pointing out Flamme understand Serie, there you go the classic pikachu face with extra flashback to Flamme. Same goes, obviously, Frieren with Himmel. The elves have the same basic, different responses. Frieren more acceptance to change, Serie is not. This is so funny to me bcs the fact that the 1st proctor knows Serie existence + created the strong barrier makes Serie basically have some contribution on human nowadays........ Serie, explain yourself, now!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if the Demon King wanted elves dead because he didn't want them teaching humans. I think you misunderstand Flamme saying neither her nor Serie are able to kill the demon king. Its not because they want him around for a challenge. It had to do with visualization of the future. They couldn't picture a world at peace.

Serie is definitely threatened by humanity's assent into the mastery of magic. However I might point out that the Demon King is driving elves to extinction, so I doubt Serie would want the demons to win. In fact, it seems like Serrie is fullfilling Flamme's will after all. Serrie established the magical authority that currently overseas all magicians in the land. Though, she seems to be doing a terrible job at it, so maybe it's just a ploy to gatekeep humanity's magic. Frieren on the otherhand isn't threatened by humanity's rise, she's thrilled by the promise of all the new forms of magic that humanity will invent. She feels exceptional pride in Fern's development as a mage, and is excited by the idea of Fern one day surpassing her.

Hey Faroh! This a bit more context into Frieren and her "Invincibility", minor spoilers included. So in the context of mages, Frieren is almost untouchable. Only really talented mages could probably kill her. However in the most recent chapter we learn that any skilled warrior could kill Freiren and Fern. Frieren said from a certain distance, if Stark were to decide to swing at them both, they'd instantly die without a chance to fight back. Now thats if he took them by surprise. But thats still impressive, and we know Frieren is very good at estimating people's strengths so. Meaning the ultimate counter for a mage in the end, is a skilled warrior.

I don't think Fern will ever kill Frieren. (In that case, she'll just be sending Frieren back to Himmel. a Happy ending.) I think what Serie meant was only a human mage would have a chance to kill Frieren. It's just the potential not that it would definitely happen. (Frieren has already lost to some human mages a couple of times.)

This is how I see the flashback to me Serie just seem to have live for way to long to actually express any care about losing a love one Serie: Frieren you know that disciple I train on a whim that I totally don't care about at all can you listen to me talk about her childhood what her favorite spell was her dream and the fact that she did incredible thing for humanity? but like I totally don't care at all that she died but let me them you about her achievement while I walk remembering how small she use to be holding my hand when she was a child. Then a thousand year later doing exactly what Flamme ask of her being the head of the largest magic association. yep she totally didn't care about Flamme at all.

You're not the only one to have taken Serie's comment on how Frieren dies as foreshadowing. This show has done a TON of foreshadowing about how the series will end. I have my own theory (based solely on what has already been shown in the anime) down below: There's a lot of foreshadowing that Fern will outlive Frieren, from what I've noticed. The series might end with Fern surpassing Frieren via needing to kill her due to some later plot necessity. In the end, Fern goes to meet her at Heaven, where she's been reunited with Himmel in the afterlife. Fern is also shown to have no 'drive' from that discussion with Sense, simply there to enjoy life with Frieren. If she loses Frieren, she truly will have nothing to do with herself. But this is also why Frieren is the 'hero' now. Fern will find purpose by following her example after she is gone in the same way that Frieren did with Himmel. There's a huge trend of the older generations passing wisdom onto the newer generations that we see with so many characters. That's all my theory anyway.

Lol what in the AoT like theory is this? Fern killing Frieren is like Mikasa will kill Eren in slice of life fantasy anime I cant imagine that happen. theorist nowadays sniffs a lot of attack of titan foreshadowing, parallel, etc. example: Frieren stands for Fri-eren which means "free eren" so fern will kill Frieren because she has to free eren. the end.

"weak times create weak people. Hard times create strong people". I think THIS is both why Serie didn't want herself to defeat the demon king AND why she does this first-class mage exam. The demon king being alive, it WILL create an era in which strong people are gonna have to step up. Flamme allowing everyone to learn magic would make this idea non existent anymore, since almost every person would be able to learn magic. I understand due to Serie's behavior and rudeness, some people might not like her, but that doesn't mean she is not important. Deep inside, she cares 🤣 even tho i give all credits to Flamme, she wouldn't be nothing without Serie. Actually all this era of magic wouldn't probably exist. In the end, it's the basic "i don't like a character that don't like the MC" thing. Serie and Frieren simply think different. In the end they're all on the same side of the story (against the demons)

@@ObiwanNekody Human being (in general) learns through suffering. Idk why anyone associates that as "bad / evil", but thr harsh truth is that, in calm and peaceful times, people won't need to surpass or develop bc they are in a comfortable state. When you struggle in something, that drives you to surpass your limits. You might disagree with the sentence, but look at what happens when you have a whole system trying to spoil and spoon feeding people = people grow sensitive, and weak. This is simply how the human being is. At least that's my opinion. Serie enjoys battle, and she only accepts the talented ones. Why's that? Bc she KNOWS dangerous times create strong people. That's why (imo) never did much against the demon army or the demon lord. Flamme said it herself: "you can imagine yourself in a peaceful era, don't you sensei?"
