God, I do love Germany and something like this only makes me love it more! I realise that these clubs (especially Dortmund) are now "global brands" to a certain extent, but the way they actively interact with their fans and seem to balance being big businesses whilst rooted in their communities is really impressive. Being able to negotiate ticket prices directly with the club?? That's very cool. The points made in the film about standing sections and being able to drink in the grounds are also important as these elements really do add to the raucous and fun atmosphere at German games. I've been to a good few Bundesliga games over the last 5 years or so and every one of them has been an absolute pleasure to behold. I really hope I can taste the Revierderby one of these days!
Well it's a different setup genius. Their clubs are associations English clubs are just clubs ultras have no say in how clubs are run as most European clubs were part of a bigger centralised structure that included other sports such as volleyball and chess if which you had a member. English clubs were born out of something more organic and stretch back to the mid 1800s. A few people managing a crowd of thousands wouldn't work in England because fans would just do their own thing.
As a Newcastle United fan under the never ending rule of Mike Ashley, i wish that our fan base could come together and retake our club and fans have their own stakes in the club much in the way these two are set up. British football at the minute is all about the money with owners not giving a fuck about the fans only their profits, fan ownership is a way to retake control and make it about the football again
Well said, but look on the bright side. At least your not a long suffering Blackpool FC supporter with the son of a rapist owning the club and seemingly determined to run it into the ground. Love Blackpool, hate Oyston!
Fun fact: If you ask a Schalke fan who went to the stadium in the 70s or even earlier, you might be surprised to hear who THEY consider their arch enemies: Rot-Weiss Essen.
That's the biggest problem with English football, the atmosphere has completely dissapated. It's like people are watching a fucking opera. Emirates and the swamp are the worst. FA regulations don't help. I was blessed to be around the time of the Kippax for a couple of years at maine road; Now that was a bloody crowd! Hopefully this trend changes soon. Oh and Eli! Sort your hair out mate!
Spot on mate, atmosphere in England for so many games is poor these days, so many real fans are priced out, on the kop for so many games this season, there are day trippers who don't even know most of the songs, and are to busy on there phones taking pics, not even watching the game at times, god knows where they get there tickets from. Its got to the point where away games are far more fun, and that should not be the case. Things will only get worse if clubs don't stop taking the piss with the cost of tickets/season tickets.
Bajan KopKing ***** It's completely frustrating, look at how much Arsenal are charging for match day tickets -£126 ludicrous. It used to be, you worked 9-5 from monday to friday with the game on the weekend being your reward, but a lot of these guys are getting priced out and instead you get knobs in suits who have no passion for the game and are there taking photos. What needs to happen is the F.A need to allow safe standing zones and allow alcohol back into the stand in some areas. The bundesliga is doing this and there haven't been any major problems so far.Mind you, i still get chills when i hear YNWA ring out from the Anfield terraces ;)
pat don to be fair the swamp and the emirates have a reputation for having no atmosphere due to the tourists, a reputatiom they certainly live up to. Etihad isn't great and its definitely a disappointment when compared to Maine road, the atmosphere at every ground seems to be poor, but Trafford and the Emirates are two places with exceptionally poor atmospheres. It's nothing personal, its just an observation, you can take it how you like, though i will say you've attempted to change this through singing sections. To bad you lot haven't had much to sing about recently ;)
unfortunately that's true, and the FA can't be bothered getting off their arses and doing anything about it. Lowering ticket prices and Re introducing standing areas and Alcohol areas should be a start.
101publicenemy I have found the Emirates not to bad to be fair, but I have only been twice and both were eve/night games, 1 in league the other in champ league. Old Trafford for the amount in the ground is a joke, tourist or tourist , they been banging on about how good they were against us lol what a load of shite, first half was you could hear a pin drop from there lot, other than singing the odd song about Stevie G( they obsessed with him) and singing you scouse bastard every 5 min, bit harsh that we thought, Rooney their best player hahah. In general its all about lower ticket prices, so the real fans can go the game together, and be able to sit together, that's why away fans make so much more noise these days.
Wish they would have shown more of the atmosphere during the game. I watched the game and especially payed attention to the crowd, knowing copa 90 would document this derby, and the crowd was buzzing, there was sining non stop and it was outstandingly loud all of the game!
I wish we had this kind of football/soccer culture in the US. On top of football/soccer being the best sport in the world so are fans and the community and unity that football/soccer bring is just amazing.
i live in dortmund and it was a harmless derby. you should have been there when dortmund spoiled schalke the trophy in 2007 by winning 2:0. that was atmosphere there...
i love how you guys showed the yellow bin, since it is not related to dortmund, but its the bin where plastic goes in and its yellow black wherever you go
nils hd what are you on about your country was brutally dispatched by 3 English teams 10-2, 4-0 3-1 your so called superior German dna don’t mean shit we have already beaten you in two world wars now we are beating you like ragdolls in football aswell just accept that England the place where football was fucking invented is better than Germany at quite literally everything
@@yuehagime8302 Nils is ironic on this one... I bet he's one of those self hating people from Germany and member of the Antifa, yelling "Death and hate to the German Michel" by not realizing that he's German as well.
I respect the way Germans go about their football. Low ticket prices and all that. The reason it doesn't work in England anymore is because of the hooligan outrage in the 60s/70s and 80s. The government worked to make football more commercial, especially in the premier league. But what I can't stand is how most people from other countries only see the premier league clubs- many have lost their atmosphere as they've become commercialized. Most English football clubs have great atmosphere, foreign football fans need to realise that they will find the best atmosphere in lower tier football. Most matches at Millwall the crowd are really hyped and the atmosphere is buzzing and intimidating in some parts
Supported Watford for 30+ years home and away but working in Berlin currently and watching FC Union Berlin few weeks back versus the League leaders was a genuine eye opener. Ticket price, free transport, terracing, atmosphere and people happily drinking or smoking without any hassle - incredible. The Germans have got football right, very envious of them because in England, especially the Premier League, it's soul has been ripped out with hardly a murmur from the people who once made it what it was. Oh, and because of some new friends, Schalke every time out of these two :-)
@@Schwaaaang holy shit is that him? Surely not... he would be crowded by bvb supporters.... though i do like the idea of klopp going back to dortmund to see his former side
The reason for the rivalry is the same background and history of Schalke und Borussia. Both clubs and people, which live in the relative towns. Both Clubs are very similar and starts as working class Clubs. Today they are the (only) pride of their towns after decline of the industry in the Revier after the 80s. Schalke got more Tradition with the titles in 40s and a succesfull team in the 70s, and Dortmund got more sucess today. A Gelsenkirchener, who lives today in Dortmund
That changed in the 70ths / 80ths many Dortmund Supporters study and Dortmund also gets a right side hooligan scene. At Schalke There are many normal workers in this years and also Immigrants from italy , spain and even some turkish people. Also in this years Schalke have one of the most brutal hooligan group in West germany and There is one of the reasons of this rivlery between Schalke and Dortmund (and a Bad immage of Schalke that exist maybe today a Bit Like Millwall)
I follow my local club here in England (Watford FC) and been to many PL / Championship games over the years as well as the lower leagues. A few years ago I spent six months working in Berlin and was fortunate enough to go watch both Hertha and Union Berlin. The difference in atmosphere, involvement, cost and overall enjoyment is like chalk and cheese. Wish it were much more like the German model here.
EPL is the face of modern football: sterile, boring, plastic and soulless. I just hope arab/russian/etc never ever enters into the Bundesliga. That would kill their amazing football culture.
TheMongooseIncident ohhhhhh ok bananaempijama i would be more cautious of companies taking over a club....like how red bull likes to jizz their name on every team it comes in contact with
+MazzaFifa HD are you actually trying to say Liverpool and Tottenham have the best fans in Europe? I'll tell you this right now. No. I doubt any English club are in the top 5. Dortmund, Galatasaray, Benfica, Sporting, Celtic, Marseille, Athletico, Anderlecht, Partizan, Red Star, are all better than every English clubs fans when it comes to passion. In fact, by far, the best fans in England aren't even in the prem; they're Leeds God bless 'em, I don't even support them and I fucking hate them but if you're going to tell me that that Tottenham outdo fans like Olympiakos, you're just dense. Leave.
no matter where you look you cannot find a derby like this Schalke and Dortmund not only have enormous fanbases but also the fans themselves are unique. This is what real football is about !!!
I know it’s been 7 years since this comment, they went there in 2018, and that was unbelievable, 2 legs, 4 restarts and the 5th time was played in Spain.
Erst informieren bitte. ;)
There are teams in the second tier of German league that have more attendance then some teams in Englands premier league . I think that's crazy and shows Germany has some of best fans in football.
The Dortmund guy who thinks there is no atmosphere in the grounds in England because we just sit down is talking bullshit. We chant and sing in the ground during the match. The other guy who is like you cant drink in the ground while watching the game is also takling crap because the are people who take drinks to their seats and have it when the game is being played. I bet these people havnt actualy been to see a game in England. A game needing 3,000 police and 1,000 security must be a derby that have people who must love to fight and get into trouble if they are caught. They must not have a security cameras in the stadiums there to see if there is any trouble happening.
I've seen a couple of games of the Premier League on English grounds and you can't compare the English atmosphere with the German. There's no doubt about it Germans atmosphere is meanwhile the best in Europe. There was a time when the English atmosphere was the ultimate atmosphere, but this time is over. Nevertheless I alway enjoy my trips to the motherland of football.
In fairness City went to Schalke in 2008 and had the place bouncing. Schalke fans where clapping us out of the ground and going on like we where something special. Since we moved from Maine Road the atmosphere at home has fucking died, doesn't mean to say it's not there it's just the game in England has changed and these new concrete bowls don't have the same energy as our older stadiums. The European leagues fans are decent and all have there own unique traits but the game in England isn't dead yet and on our day, you won't get better fans. Simple as that.
this is a interesting derby, schalke fans are fantastic , every time they sing and roar its just amazing. BVB are also quite passionate, their fans are very patient and supportive of their team. As a Liverpool fan i enjoy watching these kind of derbies compared to el classico and city vs united which is a emotionless derby.
Hi Eli and Copa 90! greetings from Indonesia. A big fan of the series and Copa 90 in general. You guys should check out derbys outside Europe; come here to Indonesia! There's a lot of derbys going on, especially persija v. persib. There's hatred, passion, and great fans!
Dear Eli, your portrait of this derby is priceless as much as timeless. Today the first Lüdenscheid vs. Schalke 04 derby is staged before an empty Signal Iduna Park. It really is a big loss. In any event, whenever some of my American friends want to know what German football is all about, I always share your video with them ... Glück auf!
Samstag isset wieder soweit.
I'm a Sunderland fan and this really reminds me of Sunderland v Newcastle. An area of England that has blighted with the closure of mines and shipping industries. Football is life in the North East. You ask every single person in the North East who they support and 99.9% will say Sunderland or Newcastle, even if they aren't hugely interested.
The supporters refusing to say the name of the other city reminds me of Ohio State fans who refer to Michigan as "the team up north". All rivalries are the same.
When Schalke Supporters refer to Dortmund, they "Lüdenscheid North", and the Dortmund Supporters refer to Schalke as "Herne West". You can better Look those Up in google Maps :)
These are two entirely different things ^^ you simply can not compare german, or even european football in generell, to american "football", that's played with the hands btw 🤣 But that is an entirely other topic
@@philippgross4939 He talks about the rivalry itself, the sport doesnt matter then. And what he says sounds like the rivalry the supporters in this video describe
In Chile, we can apply this to Colo-Colo fans referring to their rivals Universidad de Chile (or "The U") as "the last vowel". Or in Argentina when Boca refers to River as "Gallinas" (even though River adopted that nickname as theirs)
German fans are passionate and loyal like hell and probably the best in the world along with latin fans. They create an amazing and intense atmosphere. English “fans” - mainly the Premier League fans are turists. No atmosphere from the stands and what’s even worse about english fans..... they only support their club when they’re winning. When trailing, the stands are completely silent or... they leave early. That never happens in The Bundesliga.
i would love to see you guys do the Porto and Benfica rivalry, actually, its more of a classico than a derby, but still, its the best experience i have ever had, being at a porto - benfica game
I hate football and lived in Dortmund and can say derby match days always had a festive, communal vibe as a city!!! The only 2 days a year where even I watched the games!!
