My Hattie understands no BUT when I first adopted her it was all about reward based training and direction to encourage her to settle/ get accustomed to her new home. No was introduced with direction to say a treat or a toy....ie redirect her attention to something else that she would enjoy. She understood look at me, give treat...within 2 days and that really helped to get her attention when she did unwanted and potentially dangerous behaviour...ie prevent harm to her. She picked things up very quickly and we advanced to no/stop...Good girl...give treat and toy. We live in South London so it's essential she looks, stops and understands no to keep her safe. She loves the words....let's go and this way...Good girl...fuss fuss, reward...helps us to avoid the no word the majority of the time.❤
@jwcaninecare Hattie is an absolute darling. A bundle of joy and very food driven...which certainly helped train her. She adores your carrot and porridge crunchies which defo helped her training loads))) I love her so much. We are like little peas in a pod, totally in sync 😀
I always love watching your videos at the start of the work week. Thanks so much Jill. Very helpful as my boy is generally well behaved, but when he occasionally has his moments use of the word 'no' in a stern voice just seems to upset him. I then feel terrible and offer him a lickey mat to bring him out of his sulk!
With any dog, Ive always used a stern "no" as a last resort - otherwise they just ignore you if its used all the time. I save it for when they are about do something that may be dangerous, such as running into the road or attempting to chew an electrical cable.
Please can you help me? My greyhound is getting me up to go out for a walk at 5.00am! I walk her about 4/5 times each day, and she is comfortable sleeping on her sofa by the storage heater (so lovely and warm) and I take her out as late as I can in the evening. She comes up to my bed in the early hours, and sometimes will go back to sleep, but she has not been doing that this past week? I do not think there is anything wrong with her, as she is eating well, and is her usual self. xxx
Does she need to toilet and you have to do that on a walk? Or just fancies a walk? It might be about establishing a new routine for her, or there could be a medical need to address
@@jwcaninecare I have no garden, so I have to take her out on a walk, and yes, she will do a pooh and a wee, but she does not desperately do it as soon as we go out so early in the small hours of the morning, so she does not seem desperate to do these. She seems her normal self the rest of the day, as we do have a routine for walks. She sleeps for most of the day, and I take her out for 4/5 walks during the day. This morning she came onto my bed in the early hours, and went back to sleep until 7.45am which was a real treat! Yet I did nothing different yesterday evening with her. Thank you for your reply. xxx
