Unexpected things when you home a greyhound

Until I owned a Greyhound, I thought all dogs need a late night toilet, but sometimes I had to put her on a leash to go out. Then I realised the kennel routine was exercise, dinner and bed and no one is around to let them go for a midnight pee, so now Bonnie sleeps from 7pm until 7am in undisturbed bliss.

That is awesome! So excited to hear about your plans. Being nervous is only natural, its a big change to add another creature to your household. I know GAP are very thorough at testing the dogs before adoption so you will have the best chance of success :-)

2 months is not bad - it can take much longer! and hedgehogs do seem very exciting to them - I dont know why, but I havent yet had one who wasnt obsessed by any sign of one having been in the garden, or even worse, finding one

@@jwcaninecare We are going to choose a rescue greyhound next Saturday. We've had an awful experience having adopted a Romanian rescue called Rose that we were told loved children (we have 3 children ages 11, 13 and 16 and although she got used to my 3 she was terrified of any other child) i was told Rose may develope a few behavioural issues because of her background but I wasn't quite prepared for what was to come, I thought we could work through her issues and I was confident i could make it work and was willing to put in lots of hard work. Unfortunately she had numerous problems like being scared of literally everything at all times and having an intense fear of children, she developed fear based aggression, and very bad food guarding and territory behaviour which got so bad my husband got badly bitten in the face twice leaving scars, she pulled like a steam train on her lead because of anxiety and I fractured my wrist because of the pulling and also my children couldn't have friends over anymore because she snapped and lunged at them so our whole lives revolved around Roses fears and behavioual issues. That's not to say we didn't adore her, we all loved her so much despite all her issues but after 3 years of trying to help her and train her we had to surrender her back to the rescue because I was worried she might bite one of our children or one of my children's friends after the incident with my husband. We were absolutely devastated and its actually traumatised me because I loved her so much I still can't look at photos of her without crying becaof the guilt of handing her back and the loss of not having her here anymore. So this time round I've spoken to a lady who runs a greyhound rescue near us and explained all of what happened with Rose and she says she's got several greyhounds that she thinks would suit our family so we are going to meet them next Saturday, take our time in meeting them and foster one for 8 weeks just to make sure it all works out this time. Our children are experts at reading doggy body language after having Rose and very sensible so I'm hoping we'll get a good match who we can all love because I miss having a dog so much, i loved Rose a lot. I do think now looking back I was very nieve in thinking I could handle a dog with so much trauma as she'd come from a kill shelter and had her tail missing so she'd been through a lot, I tried so hard and if we didn't have children we'd probably have her still but it was to much of a risk 😔 I'm worried about things going wrong again but I desperately want to adopt another dog that needs a loving home and I've been trying to educate myself on greyhound behaviour as much as possible, I'm scared of it going wrong again but I feel lost without having a fur baby 😢 sorry for waffling, I really love your videos 😊 really helps me to understand greyhound behaviour listening to other people's experiences. X

Please please contact a greyhound rescue organisation so she can be homed to someone who has been checked out and assessed as suitable for her needs 🙏 I know greyhounds are getting harder to find in the states, hopefully there is someone out there who would love to take on your girl

@@jwcaninecare the closet rescue is five hours away one way and I can't be gone from home that long so that really isn't an option for me. Plus they would put her in a kennel which Willow wouldn't be able to handle for any length of time, it would be too stressful for her. So I'm hoping to find someone who is familiar with them and even owns one already to take her in. I wouldn't just let anyone adopt her. They would have to have the right situation before I would let her go. Another issue I have with them is the low quality food they use. I have already talked to them and I don't consider them qualified enough to care for her. Thank you for caring though, I appreciate it.

Hmmm, tricky one! I would say they don't grow out of having the interest, but may grow out of doing something about it
