This album is widely overlooked by most, mainly because of the format (very long songs, unplayable on radio). But for me it's their best. Great reaction!

As a lawyer, I definitely relate to "Dogs" as a song about lawyers. Lol. I think it represents the professional class in between the Pigs at the top and the sheep at the bottom. They are trapped in a "dog eat dog" world, if you will.

The saying, "Pigs will fly the day....(such & such)...happens", means that thing (whatever you're thinking of), will most likely never happen. So, watching for pigs on the wing means you're hoping for a very unusual & unlikely change in things or events to happen. For the world to change for the better amidst the "boredom & pain". ✌🏻

Like your first listen to Zeppelin 7 months ago…When The Levee Breaks (in my top five for sure). I just wanted to say that the selection of bands that you’ve covered is WONDERFUL; from Dylan, The Beatles, The Doors, through Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, to Dire Straits, into grunge, Metallica, Tool, Radiohead. Holy crap! I’ve been enjoying your channel since you hit Zep, and I think you have some of the best breadth and quality…from 60’s and 70’s classic rock, up through 90’s alternative metal. Bravo! You loved the hypnotic vibe of Levee and Digital Bath. Perhaps you should try a trip-hop song… like Angel by Massive Attack.

I think it was the unremitting darkness and bleakness of Animals and then The Wall, which led to the breakup of Floyd. Gilmour especially just didn’t want to stay in that bleak creative space any longer. He has spoken of feeling so much lighter, and relieved, when Waters left. Waters is a creative genius, but seems to be a pretty bitter, angry man. As you get older, you normally have less tolerance for negative energy around you. At least I’ve found that to be true myself

When I was sixteen, I'd just read Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra and bought a tent, which I pitched at a nearby gravel pit; I was gonna spend the whole summer there, but I bailed (some kids actually put a hole in it) and only in October decided that I had to spend at least one night in it before the winter. I took my iPod shuffle with Pink Floyd's Animals on it along and spent the whole night lying in a freezing pool of water listening to Dogs. :)

Good analysis. Remember the line about "And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone." And then at the end, he's ultimately dragged down by it. The reference to "the stone" will come up again in the album, but I believe that's where it's defined.

While listening to this with you it takes me back to February of 1977 when I was privileged to see Pink Floyd in their Prime play this entire album "animals" take a short break then play the entire "Wish You Were Here" album, disappear for a few minutes and come out and play three songs off of "Dark Side Of the Moon" for their encore!! I still have a Hanging On by a thread hope that they filmed this concert back in '77 and they're hiding it for a 50-year release or something! Because it was a phenomenal concert!! I've seen these guys four times, once in 74 for their Dark Side of the Moon tour and that 1977 "In the Flesh" tour that I just spoke of and I saw them in '87 and 94 for The Division Bell Tour. But I have to tell you that 1977 concert was probably the best of the four because they were really on that night and I still hope to God they filmed it because what a terrible thing to lose when it comes to Art if they didn't film it!! I still remember people passing out right and left because of the intensity of the concert and probably a few other things added to their metabolism but what a magnificent concert that was!! I remember driving home from that concert with my then-girlfriend who later became my wife and neither one of us spoke all the way home we were just I guess in shock or in AWE or both???

i don‘t really get why people always say animals is based on animal farm, because it‘s not at all. they tell completely different stories and roger waters only was inspired by the way orwell used animals to portray certain groups of people. even the roles of the pigs and the dogs are completely different. besides that, it’s an amazing book and animals is amazing album, my fav of pink floyd. always great to see someone experiencing this masterpiece for the first time…

So bleak, as if all you work for all your life is for naught. Working for the man in this dog eat dog world, with nothing to show for it at the end. Jesus, I must be depressed tonight. If you ever get the chance to listen to it, definitely do it Helene. It's not a concept album but was recorded as a soundtrack to a French film called "La Valee". IMO, the second half is better than the first but it's all Floyd at their creative best. Childhood's End (words and music by David, and based on the story of the same name) really sounds like the forerunner to Time. They remixed it for their Early Years box set so there's a 2016 version as well. It gives the album a totally different tone and both versions are worth delving into. Let me know how you like it, or them if you do both. ☺️

I remember, I think it was in 9th or 10th grade, back in the early 60’s, having to read Animal Farm and write an essay on it. It was one of the most studied books in English class in American schools back then, during the Cold War, as it is a blistering condemnation of communism. ( All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others). I have honestly not devoted much time to the lyrics of this album, but it seems that Waters has taken the idea of animals representing people in society, but turned it into a excoriating critique of capitalism.

When these dogs grew old and no longer useful, they would often be brought to a pond/river and tossed in with a heavy stone tied to them. Hence "dragged down by the stone".

The second half is that protégé sort of telling him why this isn't how things should be and why his advice is bad. I don't think it is two versions of the same person, I think the first part is the teacher and the second part is the student and the student is saying the teacher is wrong.

The acoustic rhythm guitar is played (by Gilmour) in drop-D tuning. Gives it a darker, more ominous vibe while still strikingly beautiful to the ears. You've discovered what makes Floyd...well, Floyd. It's all the "little" things that go seemingly unnoticed yet add so much to the overall composition and atmosphere. Also, as you aptly pointed out, Roger Waters wrote some of the most poignant, gut-wrenching lyrics, yet somehow they managed to fit them into some of the most compelling music ever recorded. It's ironic that you mentioned the middle synth-heavy section sounded like a "bad acid trip." My first listen to this album (in 1978) coincided with my very first acid trip (thankfully, a very good one) as a young lad who knew nothing of the Floyd until someone dropped this mind-melting masterwork on the turntable. All present at that experience just closed our eyes and held on for dear life as the Floyd took us far, far away.

The dogs are supposed to be bodyguards for the top pig CEO's. They come in different forms but are many. Lawyers, Police, Army, Social workers, teachers, doctors, psychologists or even climatologists and virologists but all with one job, to protect the pigs at the top.

Animals. Pink Floyd's epic genius on display. I love almost all of Floyd's output, but Animals is easily my favourite.

After your reactions to Dylan, Cobain and Led Zep, I realise how lame and mediocre Pink Floyd are. Bunch of public school boys messing with guitars, making lots of money... (it's a drag)

Must acknowledge the mastery in all of Floyd , that Richard's role is so important. No single cog could be missing in this great sprocket. They knew this when he passed. R.I.P. Master Wright.

"And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around." Great description of when the karma police finally show up. As for 2023, I'm noticing that the karma police seem to be stuck at the donut shot, sipping coffee and whatnot. Prayers for humanity 100%

While some of us were enjoying Wish You Were Here, the band was busy building their own studio at 35 Britannia Row, north London for this self-produced next album. The lush sound from previous has been replaced by a cold dry engineering mix. A possible texture to harness the concept.

People can harp on and even hate Rogers Waters, and Love David Gilmour all they want too. Because I LOVE his guitar playing as much as anyone else. And he has a good alternative singing voice, compared to Roger as well. But Roger wrote almost all of the original music for the songs. And practically all of the lyrics on top of it. Because as he said, after Syd was gone from the band? Someone has to write some god damn songs here. So I guess it's gonna have to be me. People also wonder where I got all my political leanings from, since I am always posting the like on my social media? Well Rogers Lyrics from a few songs on Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon. And all But Pigs of the Wing on this album and most of the songs from The Wall? I knew in my late teens, what he was talking about in these songs and the rest was history as how I would end up being. Even The Who's "Wont Get Fooled Again" song, was quite political, lyrically! Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. It's the way the business world works.

Stopped it just a comment, of course you've heard Pigs on the Wing before. At least here in America we know it as, a sarcastic response to an unrealistic proposal, you say, yeah, that'll happen when pigs fly! But it comes from the British expression, Pigs on the Wing but it means the same thing.

"Dogs" concentrates on the aggressive, ruthlessly competitive world of business, describing a high-powered businessman. The first two verses detail his predatory nature - outwardly charming and respectable with his "club tie and a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile", while behind this façade he lies waiting "to pick out the easy meat...to strike when the moment is right", and to stab those who trust him in the back. Subsequent verses portray the emptiness of his existence catching up to him as he grows older, retiring to the south rich but unloved: "just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer", and drowning under the weight of a metaphorical stone.

Identifying this type of individuals as Dogs fits the narrative better than wolves because of the expression "It's a dog eats dog world", referring to a competitive environment in which the only rule is every "man" for himself...win at all cost. The root of the expression goes back to Latin, and it translates to something like "dogs don't eat each other"...so basically pointing out that we are sometimes worse than dogs...worse than animals. And wolves are wild and free...whilst a dog needs a home. ;-)

Syed, the line 'pigs on the wing' is Waters own adaption of a very common phrase used to describe an outcome that is impossible. When someone makes what is perceived to be a preposterously bold claim they may receive the scoffing reply 'Yeah, when pigs fly!" or "...and pigs can fly!"

Pink Floyd are arguably the greatest band of the modern era. Their music is high art, and is genius on so many different levels that it sets them apart from almost all other great bands. Have you considered extending your appreciation of good music to vocal artists who use their voices as incredible instruments to transmit strongly and mess with your mind. Try these as an introduction: Dimash - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JEz1qGS0T1Q.html Diana Ankudinova - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kt78je5hD0k.html

I knew that you would really enjoy this album - now you can see it as a necessary link from "Wish you were here" to "The Wall" - This is all related to the Syd Barrett story, post-war paranoia, and Waters' own sort of demented and bitter vision.
