It's nice to see how a boy of your age follows the music of the PF with attention and maturity, maturity that often not even us, contemporaries of the group and older than yours, were able to put in a single listening session. I speak for myself, of course, in that period recently married with all the problems of the case on my mind. In fact this album (and all the others by PF, to be honest), have been the soundtrack of my life for almost 50 years and, seeing young people playing this music, without preconceptions about its seniority, makes me happy and still helps me more to enjoy it when I can. Good work. - Greetings from Italy...

THIS. I am right here with you sir! Totally agree. I am not quite 50 but have the same affinity for it. I didnt 'get' most of it til I was way older and then was like what world have I been living in ...Crazy. But still, holds up for as long as it has. And SIlas, mad props to you, my friend!

It’s amazing that Pink Floyd’s music still sounds more innovative and unique than anything being produced today, 40 to 50 years after they recorded it. Finish this album and The Wall, then you’ll be ready to take on their 1994 Pulse concert recording, which includes live performances of their best known songs as well as the entire Dark Side of the Moon album. That concert is easily one of the best of all time and will take your appreciation of the band’s talent and genius to a whole new level you can’t even imagine now.

I bought this album on cassette for a dollar at a garage sale when I was 14 (early 90s). I played it so much I wore the tape out and eventually bought the CD

Too right. I wore out a number of cassettes until I got enough money for the equipment to copy cassettes and keep the originals from getting worn out. All those bands made a lot money off me replacing worn out cassettes. Then CDs came along and I started all over again anyway.
@kevinmonceaux2101
@kevinmonceaux2101 Год назад
@@jimangela4589 I've come full circle. I've progressed from collecting music on vinyl to cassettes to CDs to listening to music via streaming services, and now I'm back to collecting music on vinyl. I have some KISS records on vinyl that I've had since I was in elementary school in the '70s that still sound descent, in spite of being played on some less than ideal equipment back when I was a kid. Since getting back into vinyl, and getting into jazz, I've collected some albums from the '40s and '50s that still sound great.

Summer 1977…a young 14 year old boy discovers his older brother’s stash while that brother is at work. Curious, he decides to help himself to a couple of “puffs” to see what everyone is talking about….and that’s when he notices an album on the turntable. He puts the Koss headphones on, drops the needle on the first side of Animals, and forever changes his life.

So .. I grew up with pinkfloyed, supertramp, genesis, Beatles, queen, electric light orchestra, Fleetwood Mac , mic Oldfield and others . But I always remember the first time I heard Jeff Wayne's war of the world's.. this was going back to when I was seven . I had a Walkman that year for my birthday and this particular night I had been woken by a recurring nightmare . So my dad gave me the copy of Jeff Wayne's war of the world to go to sleep to .. it was such an awesome experience. And I went to sleep to that for the whole week each day getting a little further into it .. it is an awesome album that I think you would enjoy . Electro music made in 1978 Narrated in between telling the story of one reporter trying to get home to his girlfriend/wife amidst the invasion from Mars . Set like the book in England in the Victorian/Edwardian turn of the 20 th century.. a. When I first heard this, it QUICKLY became my favorite Floyd album, with Sheep being the favorite track. The lyrics on this album are based on the concepts presented in George Orwell's book Animal Farm (1945) which takes a farm full of animals and uses them to tell a story about the perils of totalitarianism and authoritarian governments. In the book each animal represents a different element of society, the workers, the owners the police, etc etc. Here the Dogs represent the cold and calculating business men, the ones who mercilessly and ruthlessly manipulate and exploit everyone around them, until they are left to die alone in their old age, reaping the cancer they have sown. The Pigs represent the ruling and political class, with very specific references to contempary 70s political figures. The Sheep represent the common people, mindlessly waiting their turn for their harvesting. The lyrics of Dogs are the best, but Sheep also has great lyrics. Pigs is just a great jam.

The term "you dog" seems to apply here however Dogs are truly a gift to human kind and are anything but cold if treated with love and kindness so it's a stretch by Rodger - the rest apply well. Thx I didn't know some of this info!

One of the great things you'll find about Pink Floyd is they don't repeat themselves. Yet they only spent the 70s continually putting out some of the best music ever committed to vinyl. Animals doesn't sound like Dark Side or the lush flowing arrangements of Wish You Were Here or the stark reality on The Wall. I mean, it is all there in certain respects but never in an attempt to duplicate prior successes.

No band quite like Pink Floyd, and no one would mistake David Gilmour guitar work with any other guitarist alive, his playing is so unique you would never mistake him with anyone else! His emits sooo much emotion in his playing, you "feel" his guitar riffs, his Stratocaster speaks from his soul. I've been playing guitar for almost 50 years, and I've seen virtually all the great Rock guitarists from the 70s and into the 80's. His use of 4 step bends, emotionally filled riffs, double stops, string inflections, and pauses is unequaled imo. Gilmour instinctively knows when a pause adds more to the solo than constantly playing, many guitarists these days don't understand the affect a pause, now and then adds to a song. Gilmour has a purposefulness and inventiveness in his solos, a rise and fall in many of his solos is very powerful. In fact, Pink Floyd uses a musical rise and fall in many of their songs. Imo, he says more with a few notes, some big bends, etc. than other guitarists do playing a bajillion notes a minute!

Just a note to say that the Pig inflatable broke free and floated across southern England. This Album is where Rodger started to try to take over the band hence the aggravation with other members that opened a rift that has never healed even to this day. The subject matter began to get much darker and gloomier which was fine for this album and The Wall but by the time ‘the final cut was released it began to get boreing as well as depressing and I for one was delighted when Rodger left and the remaining three were able to get back to a more varied and brighter feel for the last two real albums (the final album was after Rick had died and was a loose collection of fragments that had been recorded before his death). Oh by the way you should go back to check out Atom heart mother and more especially Meddle.

Great to see you getting into Pink Floyd! My fav band growing up. The Animals album is loosely based on “Animal Farm” by George Orwell. Check out some of the videos on the band’s history if you get a chance. The album “Wish You Were Here” is based on the life of Syd Barrett, the original founder of PF, who lost his sanity after their first album was released in 1967, (probably from a combination of Schizophrenia and too much LSD). He was replaced by guitarist David Gilmour, who was a high school friend of Barrett’s.

Listening to a Pink Floyd composition can be a little overwhelming first time around. Just kick back open your heart and mind, and let it enfold you. BTW, the release of Animals in 1977 marks the moment the flying/floating pig becomes an iconic symbol of Pink Floyd. I subscribed to your channel, because I just love your reaction to pink Floyd..it takes me back to my childhood, discovering Floyd at age 14...I dived right in...emotionally, spiritually...whilst many of my peers were listening to what was popular in the early 90's , I was deconstructing pink Floyd 😂.. They had... and have an almost cathartic influence on my psyche, unlike any other band , especially their golden era of albums, Meddle, dark side of the moon, wish you were here, Animals and The Wall.

You could search for lyrics and have them displayed on your screen as you listen. Words are a distinct centrepiece of a song. No matter how trite, but better if it is more meaningful, complex or cryptic. The music is the part that holds it together and makes it listenable. In the past with no internet we'd play the songs over and over again to get the lyrics so we could sing along.

I'm 62 now but when I was 18 I had this music in my head. So when I was in the Army in boot camp doing the rush marsh with backpack and weapon for 5 miles it was a breeze. One foot keeping up with the foot in front of me. In life when things go south, sometimes all you have to do is play that music, and you will be fine. It works for me. Even till this day.

Hey Silas! Thank you, once again, for the great and honest reactions. This is a song that came later in my life than it should've. I was about 19 when I heard Animals for the first time, as, when I was growing up through high school, and a bit later, music wasn't as integral to my life as it is now. But, once I heard Dogs, I knew, for one of the first times in my music education, what the songwriter was feeling. The entire outro monologue, "Who was born in a house full of pain," onwards, perfectly encapsulated my life, and a level of clarity hit me. Of course, I was still screwing my life up, so after that point, everything I did, I had the keen understanding that it was on me from that point, as I'd already absolved my upbringing of any more pain that it had already caused me. I digress. What I mean to say here is this: That outro was me. 110%. I was under enough thumbs to make one really messed-up hand. One of those thumbs, I didn't learn until later, was my own. I was a "gifted" child. For all my physical and medical maladies, I more than made up for it with my mind. An IQ hovering around 160, having graduated high school with high honors at 16, and, had my mom listened to the school board when they told her I needed to be advanced further than I was (I'd started school at 4, and was placed in first grade after 2 weeks of kindergarten, but they wanted to place me in third grade), and had I had the motivation to challenge myself instead of cruise by with the gifts I had naturally, I estimate I could have finished high school by 12. My home environment, however, was not conducive to growth or healthy maturation. I'd grown up real fast, because I'd had to. Having to call the cops on my dad to protect my mom when I was 6--among other things--will do that to a person. For some years, I worried that I was fated to become like Roger Waters, and I didn't know what to do. I didn't know I could change it. I'd been tied at the hip with my mom for the first 16 years of my life, and as fate had decided, the family came with me when I went to university. That was the beginning of the end, for me. I had no understanding that my life could be any different than it was, because, to that point, that's all I'd known. Some people hear those things that Roger talks about, and it pushes them to be different. I heard those things, and I felt the crushing weight of my impending destiny/fate. It was like Cthulhu had been released and was coming directly for me, and no one else. I was convinced, for a long time, as recently as two years ago, this week, that I was fated to burn bright and die out soon. I'm struggling through trying to find a path where that first bit is true, while the second part isn't. This. This is why Dogs is my favorite Pink Floyd track, and probably my favorite song of all-time. It's felt like David and Roger were talking to me, that Nick and Rick were helping to provide the soundtrack to my backstory and my downfall. Never have I had a piece of music speak to me like this. I've been motivated, moved to tears, made completely immovable, by music before, but never this. This was simultaneously a weight pressing down on me, and a weight off my shoulders. Hearing this song, among a slew of other things, good and bad, are what led me down the path I'm on now, one of redemption, one of realizing self-worth, one of doing the things I want to do in life, one of daring to create something that lasts longer here than I do. As Roger implied, sometimes, a pat on the back is patronizing, and what you really need is a kick in the pants.

Brilliant tones, composition, drama - Wall to Wall Awesome! :) Are you aware that stuff at this level is still being composed? Try the album Anesthetise by Porcupine Tree. Or, My Wilderness by The Pineapple Thief. If you want to stay in the '70's, Queen's A Night at the Opera is a knock-out, esp. Side 2.

When you get to RUSH 2112 (and I have no doubts you will soon enough) make sure for side 1 at least that you do the whole thing at once and have somebody who's never heard it with you to see what you both interpret. Pink Floyd such a vibe eh!

i gotta say, your the first reactor that is doing it the right way (when it comes to the floyd) you have to do the albums in order, and not just songs, but entire album or half (pt1/pt2) with their music its always intertwined ,,transition between songs that create a "feeling/mood" im enjoying watching you go through this catalog i love seeing someone discovering the floyd for the first time"virgin floydsters", im 60 so i remember when they were making these records and i turned my daughter on to the wall on dual cassettes and a walkman,she was 12 and that was in 1994, she is SUPERFAN every since,,so i turned her on to your channel and she is enjoying watching your reactions as well,,,,,,welcome aboard my friend,,,,"welcome to the machine"

There's another channel called VERDYChannel, and she has done a few Floyd albums in full like this, as well as 4 or so Zepp albums, and a host of other random classics. She is very good, I don't know how many of those videos are still up, but I thought you might enjoy.

Yeah, there are many good synth sounds, Moogs, ARPs, VCS3, and real electro-mechanical Rhodes electric piano, and a Hammond Organ. The guitars, drums, and keyboards all play together so well. It's great enjoying this music, and seeing/hearing people discovering it. Really fantastic stuff from Pink Floyd.

Silas….perhaps printing out the lyrics beforehand would be helpful? That way, you don’t have to worry about “catching” them. We had an advantage back in the day in that many bands often printed their lyrics on the inside album cover……or on the back cover. That helped. You might wish to go back and read the lyrics from DSOTM and WYWH….very deep.

IMO wish you were here is their most moving, affecting song-but Dogs is their compositional masterpiece. Better instrumentals in their catalog don’t have these lyrics and none of their most clever songs are a full on suite like this. As I interpret it, the first half is the alpha male worker as alpha dog, explaining how he gets over and runs the system to get what he wants. The second half of the song exposes him as a pawn, expendable, just a loyal dog fighting for his scraps. The REAL powers are the pigs. It’s the most imaginative and damning exposition of 20th century modern life I’ve ever heard in song.

One last thought: in less civil times a sometimes thing to do with unwanted puppies was to drown them with stones in a river or lake. What a chilling metaphor for the human condition in 1970s England: “who was dragged down, by the stone.”

The album Wish you were here was after Dark side and the band had recorded so much material for that album they thought they should turn it into a double album with Animals, but the record company said no!!
