A First time Players Review of No Man's Sky - No Man's Sky Review 2022
If you are wonder what its like or what to expect when jumping into No Mans sky for the very first time, then look no further because thats exactly what I did. Was the experience worth it? Join me in the video and lets find out
No Man's Sky is an action-adventure survival game developed and published by Hello Games. The game is built around four pillars: exploration, survival, combat, and trading. Players are free to perform within the entirety of a procedurally generated deterministic open world universe, which includes over 18 quintillion planets. Through the game's procedural generation system, planets have their own ecosystems with unique forms of flora and fauna, and various alien species may engage the player in combat or trade within planetary systems. Players advance in the game by mining for resources to power and improve their equipment, buying and selling resources using credits earned by documenting flora and fauna, building planetary bases and expanding space fleets, or otherwise following the game's overarching plot by seeking out the mystery around the entity known as The Atlas.

I started playing no man’s sky back in November and played on and off for about 50 hours since. Those first 25-30 hours were fun but a bit tedious, as there was the resource gathering part and understanding systems, but also because of my own obsession to find the perfect planet to make a base and call home, I just endlessley warped through galaxies, looking for the planet I wanted. Eventually I did, and set up a small base to start there. I then started going though my quests, now, that was when the real fun began. I started having so much fun for those next 20 hours, most of which have been in the past few weeks, and I’d return to my base occasionally and build it out a bit more each time. However, I then found a better planet, and it then clicked for me that I don’t need one base only, with the way the storage works in the game, I can have as many bases as I want, all across the galaxy, all with different designs and vibes, and then I rely understood what they meant by a universe sandbox. I have no idea what I’m gonna do each time I boot the game up, And I fucking love it.

An honest and up-front review, and about what I'd give it. NMS is really fun -- for about the first 50 to 60 hours of gameplay. Then you start noticing something: All of the planets, creatures, plants and buildings are things you've seen before in slightly different variations. Stuff starts getting less fresh and wondrous, and starts becoming more routine and grind-y. But I'll tell you, it's a fun grind for some people, like me. Set your own goals, have your own kind of fun, and just try to overlook how many times you've seen the same squat, armadillo-like animal or giant cactus with maybe one or two extra limbs. I have over 800 hours in NMS, so this isn't just some BS I'm talking about here. I have thoroughly experienced what the game has to offer, and I can say that, if I were making it, I would not use procedural generation for the basic engine. It's a neat idea, but it just doesn't really work for open-world games.
@AmateurGameReview
@AmateurGameReview 2 года назад
I can see that happening eventually to me also. I would say without the procedurally generated world's it would be hard to create something of that magnitude

@unknwnn7673
@unknwnn7673 2 года назад
@@luckylanno 100% agreed. Without procedural generation the game just wouldn't work. If anything, they just need to overhaul the system to add more diversity with creatures, plants, and biomes on top of whats already there. If i had to guess... id say Hello Games already has that on their radar and plan to implement it at some point

True, I don't know where his B+ came from though. The game is unrivalved in most categories, you can't get this experience anywhere else. It's at the very least A-. His only downside was that the game was too open world for some and that the game has varying levels of visual beauty, which both are true, to be fair.
@AmateurGameReview
@AmateurGameReview 2 года назад
Rating scales are hard because they are so subjective. And it bothers me that most reviews rate a terrible game at like a 6 or 7.... I prob should start using numbers as it's a better separator, but I think you should use the whole spectrum.... That being said think of my B+ as like an 88 out of 100.
@hejalll
@hejalll 2 года назад
@@AmateurGameReview Yeah it's true even the worst games get close to a 5/10, which should be the average. If you are worried about that, you could just refrain from using numerical or lettered ratings. You could just do "Below average" - "Average" - "Above Average" - "Far above average" etc.
@AmateurGameReview
@AmateurGameReview 2 года назад
That's a really good idea actually. I'm usually not to worried about it. It just becomes a problem after you review a lot of games and then realize you rated one slightly higher than another even tho the lower rated game is def better lol. Seriously though I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. The channel means a lot to me and I love every interaction I get
@hejalll
@hejalll 2 года назад
@@AmateurGameReview Yeah thanks, I enjoyed the video. It's just the rating that for me comes across differently, perhaps because of a cultural difference. A B-rating might be perceived differently depending on where you live. To me, a B+ is just slightly above average, which sounds off to me, as No Man's Sky is, to me, and from the sounds of it you as well, an experience much better than the average game.

What I'd like is having some main villain, or have the existing factions fight eachother periodically. Be able to take over systems by capturing their bases, building your fleet, arming it, and having it fight other fleets, not just trade. Having space shipyards, not just plain space trade docks. Be able to raid bases with AI Squadmates which you will arm with whatever you want.

That would be a totaly different game, No man's sky is No man's sky because it doesnt have this. Elite Dangerous, EVE online, (Star Citizen) and others have more action if you are looking for action. NMS is to just relax, explore and have a fight every now and then with some Sents or Pirats.

Welcome to the Galactic Brotherhood! I have over 1600 hours in this game, and I have only had it since Dec 2020. Survival Bob amd Jason Plays sold me on it. There were so many bad reviews cus if you remember... in 2020 it was hip to hate everything. Bob and Jason were having a lot of fun in NMS, so I checked it out. 1600 hours... and still not sick of it. Whenever I approach boredom, conveniently a new expedition or update drops and it comes roaring right back. Each save I have is a different playstyle. One is my building save. One is my baller save, with 4 billion space bucks, 28million nanites and everything top shelf. One is my industrialist save, i build whole systems to facilitate making Stasis Devices or nanite farms. One is an explorer/shiphunter save thats got like 50 galaxies I have been to. And my permadeath save is a Pirate. I dont mine, I dont farm. I jack freighters and sell the booty, run derelict freighters for nanites, and search for buried treasures. Once you are comfortable w the systems, do a no starter ship challenge. Ignore the Radiant pillar and that 1st part of a new game and walk til you find a crashed ship or a trade post. You may know by now, but there is an amazing community, and there are great guides for everything NMS. Bob n Jason have good gameplay guides. If you like building, check out Beeblebum and Action Pants Gaming. And Xxiou games has the best community events and chill streams. And of course... you can make some NMS content now too. Its really the best community in gaming.

@@AmateurGameReview Theres so many ways to be "successful" in NMS as far as making money. The game isn't constantly trying to confound you like most games, theres no ticking clock or constant enemies to force you into a play style. The downside is there is a lot of systems in the game I never use. I never take advantage of the trading mechanics, buying low and traveleing to another system to sell high. I don't do much cooking either. And there are 100s of recipes, some really complex, that sell for quite a bit. Or you can feed them to Mellonhead in the Anomaly for nanites. If you dont have it yet, I suggest getting the free Assistant to No Man's Sky app for your phone. It has literally everything in the game in it, how to make it, what it refines down to, where to find it, etc. Its super useful, especially when crafting the complex high value tech items like Stasis Devices, that require like 30 different ingredients all crafted in sequence to end up with stasis devices. Its fun to find a system that has all the right biomes and resources to build all the farms and mines you need to make them. Basicly make the entire system a Stasis Device factory. That will take a week of searching and building all by itself. Imagine if Hello Games had the budget and man power of Rockstar or Ubisoft... Its already the best game ever, and 15 people develop it in a small office, and every DLC and update has been free. Zero microtransactions, zero lootboxes, zero pay-to-win... idk how they did it. It could be better... but not much, not while retaining the size and diversity of the universe.

Acquiring units can be a bit difficult at the start of ones NMS journey. Let me help you overcome that hurdle quickly, and earn a monstrous 40+ slot ship in the process. First, empty your exosuit and ship inventory for anything that can't be sold and then fly to a space station to sell the rest. Its important to save up a little bit: around 2 million+ is good so that you can start by buying low end ships. Farm the 2 mil quickly, either by selling salvaged data or by selling mined resources and then get your ass to a space station and stay there until you hit around a 100mil. Which really doesnt take that long. You just.. stay a station, jump on top of your ship and use it as a vantage point from where use your scanner to quickly see how much the ships that arrive costs. (Can only be seen with the analysis visor the second the ships hit the ground.) Run to the ships NPC, trade the ship, so that you essentially swap ships (for this to work, your ship needs to be the priciest of the two, hence a bit of starting capital.) then you *immidiately* run back to your old ship, talk to the NPC again before they leave (it takes a while for this to happen, so chill, from corner to corner of the space station, you can easily make it before they fly off with your ship). Say you wanna buy the ship, go through the same process of trading ships and you will see that one of the purchase buttons says something along the lines of: trade (Claim ship, free) There we go, now we own both ships, free of charge. Then you go to the ship initially owned by the npc, enter it to make it your current *primary* ship (VERY IMPORTANT STEP) then, go to the ship terminal at the space station, break it down for parts and sell it at the galactic trade terminal on the other side of the station. Rinse and repeat at your leisure. One loop is about 2minutes. The wait time is looking for ships, which can easily be triggered by flying and and back in to the station, if you feel that you've waited long enough without ships. This method starts slowly, if you start with a few million units, but builds RAPIDLY and you wont need units for anything after having done this for a few hours. It also farms you a metric ton of resources of all kinds from destroying ships. Fastest damn way I've ever gotten 10k Chromatic metal, lemme tell ya. 42+ slot ships net you at least 40. mil units, thousands of resources and if its an S-class, dope level upgrades for your ship as well. As a sidenote, you're obviously farming for rare ships while doing this. And they will come. They will aaaaaalll come to you. A 3 starred Gek system economy (requires economy scanner) is a real money maker. Save that station. Easily a billion in a day.

yup, captures how I first felt when I got the game. a good strategy for making money is cobalt. get a hauler with a big inventory (I use this old beater C class) and fill it with cobalt. then go to stations and sell it all at once. this will set the demand for cobalt in that system to around -80%. you can then buy all of your cobalt back at an 80% discount. repeat this over and over for millions of units.

Just bought the game yesterday for the first time. I remember all the negative press back in 2016, but was never really interested (felt like they were overpromising). Fast forward 5 years, I kept hearing people say "man, all they need to do is No Man Sky that game" and I was like "wut?" Last night, was looking for a new game to play alone / with my partner. Stumbled upon No Mans Sky. Read a few reviews and it seemed interesting. Mind you, I had zero expectations... Started at 8 PM last night. Ended at 3 AM because I had stuff to do today. When i'm done with said stuff, I'm going back to play more. What an absolute gem. Hoping that this doesn't sound too nooby, but it feels like Subnautica in Space, and I loved Subnautica... everything about NMS, so far, has been amazing.

It's a great time drain and they let you know how much time you've put in because your save files keep records. I have 2 save files right now with over 700 hours of game play. Been playing this on and off for maybe 3 or 4 years now. The game gets regular updates via free down loads so this game developer is cut from a different cloth than any game developer I've seen. *Warning* Geknip is highly addictive and you're being watched constantly, interloper. 😆

Every update has stabilized multiplayer a bit more, and I'm noticing little hints here and there in lore and team missions point towards larger group missions now and in the future. It use to cap out around 10 or 20 I think, now I go to community events where 30 people are on a planet, with no major issues. Sometimes if it's an insanely huge base it doesn't load right for some people. With all the latest weapon updates PvP has been a ton of fun. I'm not sure why people don't think PvP is any good - they must not look for the people that do it. Fantastic game! Fantastic review. Subbed :)

People generally don’t like pvp because there are a trolls and people with modded ships that are near invincible. Also the game plays better as a single player explorer game as that was what it was originally designed to be.
@NotaVampyre111
@NotaVampyre111 2 года назад
@@robopenguin5501 That's one of the reasons I avoid multiplayer and especially PvP. Four years ago a mod glitched my main ship. It turned my photon cannon into a rapid fire gatling gun of death that can fire for nearly 4 minutes before it over heats,. To use it against others would just be wrong.
@MandrakeDCR
@MandrakeDCR 2 года назад
@@robopenguin5501 That's not the point. I think everyone understands what the focus of the game is. My point is that people tend to proclaim that you can't PvP in the game, and/or the PvP sucks. I think this is just complaints from the peanut gallery that they can't sit around and gank people. Because, if you turn on multiplayer and then turn on damage, it's up to you and your comrades to make up the rules - modded or not, etc. I've seen (and participated in) some seriously epic battles in derelict freighters. Everyone gets together, has fun storming the freighter and getting resources, then everyone runs to a corner, countdown from 10, and everyone comes out blasting. Dogfights on planets with the giant mountains that reach the atmosphere is unbelievably fast and fun if you are a good flyer. I'm horrible at PvP, and it's still fun to watch and occasionally jump in. So many options, and everyone gets to decide on the rules before they play. :) EDIT: To be clear, my main gameplay in NMS is paradise planet hunting, galaxy hopping, farming and base building. I rarely participate in this stuff. Maybe 4 times ever, total. But, I do go participate in 'clearing out the arenas' (derelict freighters), or help build arenas, enjoy the show and being with friends of course. So basically... "Hey, I'm just sayin'!!" lol

I’d give it an A minus instead of your B plus just for the PSVR experience. The ‘minus’ on that A has less to do with Hello and more to just the PS4 trying to run VR with the hardware at hand. In spite of the long load times and the draw distances, this game was incredible for me. I remember anticipating it back in the day, but I purchased it after all the updates and patches landed. I’m actually giving away my PS4 and PSVR to my brother in anticipation of the PSVR2 launch. I know this vid didn’t get into it but NMS is truly a fantastic example of entry level VR. Sony polishes their product and there’s just no better way to experience a game like this when you look down and see a different body, arms moving around in real time, the sun of some alien planet washing out the glass on the screen of your ship so you have to lean your head a bit go the left to get a better view.

Started playing this game with a friend. My journey began on an hostile frozen planet. After dying over 20 times to frost damage or some random sentential only to repair one module I got so frustrated with the game I quit playing for a while. Picked it up a few weeks later and with a lot of frustration got my spaceship finally repaired only to find out that the game gets extremely repetitive and boring really fast. After a while all the planets look the same. On top of that the multiplayer section is non existent. No base building together, every multiplayer mission is nothing more than a glorified single player mission. The game just feels empty for me.

My first video games were on the BBC acorn electron around 1984 (I think) which at the time, blew me away. But I always wanted a sci fi game and No Mans Sky has come very close to. There was the original Elite, but I never played that. Gamers are incredibly spoilt nowadays with the variety of games that are available! I look at what is available now compared to then and it’s amazing that we not only have large worlds to play around in but with NMS, an entire galaxy! Mind blowing! And yet, people still complain.

If you want an interactive way to earn a lot of credits (meaning no farming), then all you need to do is get yourself a cheap hauler class ship, the better ones can be found in Wealthy 3 star economies, empty as much space as you can in the cargo bay (48 slots max), then crash the economy in wealthy systems. You do this by purchasing the entire stock of an item from a space station until the purchasing price drops to about 79% the galactic average. The most lucrative way is to purchase those items that are worth like 50k per item. Once the price drops to it's max threshold you then buy back the entire stock once more and sell it at a different star system. This method is also the most lucrative way to run a trade route between economy types because each economy sells special items that sell really well at the adjacent economy in the cycle.

No Man's Sky is another great example, after Sea of Thieves, what can happen if developers actually care. Sea of Thieves also was a disaster at launch (not as big as NMS tho), and now it's THE coop game to play with a bunch of friends just for shits and giggles. I tried NMS five times and never played for longer than 30 minutes before uninstalling it. This time, I forced myself through the initial experience, and it clicked. Oh boy, how it clicked. After learning the basics, I jumped into the Polestar expedition (finished now), and I'm having a blast. This game is a wonder. I can't stop thinking about it. If Xbox game pass contained only No Man's Sky and Sea of Thieves, I would still pay for the subscription. It's games like these that are a shy ray of light in the vast ocean of shit that is the modern game industry.

The graphics are dependent on what console or pc you’re playing on. If you’re playing of a hard drive you’ll get pop in but it is reduced big time playing on an SSD. The level of detail & texture is great through out and planetary sparseness doesn’t change that. Every world isn’t going to be a paradise planet. Some are supposed to be barren & a bit ugly.
