The number of Chinese students enrolling at American secondary schools is on the rise--and if the success of the Wisconsin International Academy is any indication, it will grow exponentially in the years ahead.
VICE News Tonight visits a former hotel in Milwaukee that is now home to 170 Chinese teenagers. They have left their families on the other side of the world to study for a better future in the American Midwest.

First lesson in living in America: we want your money.

It's owned by Chinese gov. (Cernet) USA won't see a penny, we may even give them tax breaks or something idk, I know this is not fair for US citizens seeking education or technical skill.

I went to a private high school in the States as an international student. Realistically, the schools didn't decide to admit more international students for diversity, but are rather in it for the money. My high school recruited more Chinese students when they saw that their financial situation was going downhill. When there's an overwhelming number of international students in a school, the Chinese students themselves will no longer get the immersive experience their parents paid big bucks for; and it is not fair to use students as a financial tool, especially when they claim to be "non-profit."
@whoboo6780
@whoboo6780 6 лет назад
Jiayuan Wang Bottom line no one talks about especially the racists. Secretly they want more Chinese students to use as scape goats and lining their pockets. It's all about the money really. Actually these universities see Chinese as nothing more than cash cows. Chinese enrolments in the US are also getting fewer and fewer anyway but anything like this is not news because Americans are too embarrassed that Chinese don't need them.

I don't feel like this is a secret, or at least an open secret. Rich parents in the US pay to send their kids to the best schools, and rich parents in other countries do the same. Then, the school uses the income from the students who pay full tuition to subsidize students on financial aid or other programs, which she mentions quite honestly at 3:55. Its just the economics of running a school. That doesn't mean that they are profiting. As you said, they are non-profits. That just means they can cover their costs or increase their programming.
@cecilycook5592
@cecilycook5592 5 лет назад
You are right on that. Its money!!! We, in Washington state, deal more with Japan and MOSTLY Mexicans but our neighbors in Canada are dealing with a crisis because the government is letting in basically ONLY rich Chinese and its screwing up the economy, not making it better!!! Our economy is a mess as well because of it. Mostly because we have poor Mexican families coming in and having to spend SO MUCH educational funds on teaching them English.

Everyone complaining about international students need to understand this: 1) They sacrifice their home and culture so they have more incentive to work harder and will probably be more successful than you 2) Middle class families in America generally live comfortable lives, this leads to a lazy lifestyle and the offspring of middle class families (you, the complainer), probably did not try hard enough in school or went to college to party and not secure yourself in this highly competitive society 3) Stop complaining about people "stealing" your jobs and education and try harder instead.
@tsaicho
@tsaicho 6 лет назад
I agree. I find it amazing how a lot of my fellow Americans complain about foreigners taking "their" jobs like they are entitled to those jobs. Everybody is just trying to survive and make a living. As far as I am concerned, those who have an advantage to start out, like people in the middle class, need to take advantage of those opportunities ASAP because there are people who have to struggle to get out of poverty and improve their lives, and those kids are going to put in more work to improve their lives. Great examples of Americans who grew up in low-income households and became wealthy & successful through putting in the work and taking risks include Ken Langone (financier and Home Depot founder), Colonel Harlan Sanders (KFC founder), Dr. Quinones-Hinohosa (formerly an undocumented immigrant turned world-renowned neurosurgeon), Jose Hernandez (natural-born American retired astronaut and son of migrant workers), and Lloyd Blankfein (former Goldman Sachs CEO).
@tsaicho
@tsaicho 6 лет назад
The complainers have zero "grit" because they grew up & lived too comfortably without understanding how precarious their financial situations are whereas the successful people who originally came from low-income families or poverty had the "grit" to keep fighting to improve their lives.

You're describing a situation that isn't unique to the United States at all. 1.) Some Chinese people complain about foreigners living and working in China, similar to what happens in the United States. 2.) Wealthy Chinese people are actively buying up much of the United States real estate, food supply, and have plans to acquire much more. As an "American", it's odd that you feel a greater loyalty to Chinese people than to Americans.

The thing is that there are always sick people. Regardless of whether it's in their own country or abroad, there are always people in need of treatment and medication. Also, not every disease has a solution yet, so there's also a need for medical research. In this way, there's always a need for those in the medical field.

They make pretty good engineers and doctors, at least in theory, if they are very disciplined. Most Asians, especially Chinese, are NOT known for creativity, it's just not in their culture. I have worked with many over the years. The only creative Chinese I have known were from Taiwan. Even the children raised in the USA since very young, due to parental imprinting, usually only have 'creativity' in computer science or figuring out ways to make money. They're all about money, and nothing else, at least the ones I have met. The creative ones are really wonderful people though, very sad, they are in the minority. Indians are not much different. They all tend to make great Ph.D. students and do well in research settings / government or science jobs, but they can barely tie their shoes or do very much that requires common sense or construction / hands-on skills. It's not just a general lack of spatial ability, it's also an overriding sense of entitlement and laziness created by a caste society and worship of money as an End-All, Be-All. And the parents are so brainwashed by the Communist government, trying to explain reality to them is like bashing your head against a brick wall.
@theuglykwan
@theuglykwan 6 лет назад
YamFZR93 There is some truth currrently in that but you can't account for the golden ages in Chinese history where innovations, discoveries and inventions were plentiful. Our civilization couldn't have gotten so far without creativity. We stagnated in the past few centuries just as some of the west fell into the dark ages while arabs and chinese were enjoying golden ages. Are you coming into contact with a specific class of Chinese? I've met postgraduates that had never worked a day in their life and were just like the ones that couldn't tie their shoe laces. But there were others who were poor and clawed their way up - to them it is western people who seem entitled and lazy.
@YamFZR93

Remember, these are all PRIVATE schools, which set their own standards and curriculum, at a premium price of course. They set up shop in Wisconsin because apparently to set up shop is cheap as shit, thus maximizing profit, as they charge the Chinese students 4,000$ more than American kids. Chinese parents well know not to send their kids to PUBLIC schools in the US as it's a failure. PRIVATE schools are taking over, and that's a sad situation. The more this country that I love is privatizing our prisons, our schools, and private security firms, and many more industries the more we lose our liberty and freedoms. It was a very good school and I loved it. We were bussed in from all parts of the city. It was expensive. I grew up in a wealthy family. However, I will say that school is what you make of it and anybody can excel if they want to. I am a poor musician now, lol. Just goes to show that a great education does't always pan out. It's a myth that parochial schools like this Catholic School in Milwaukee are privately funded . Many of these types of schools receive a lot of tax dollars to operate . In NO way should American tax dollars be spent to pay for these "private " schools for wealthy foreign studnets or any student. Obviously USA is a shaddy country so parochial schools across the country like state colleges/uni are allowed to make $billions of dollars and still fit the catagory of "a non profit" . If people of Milwaukee or the state are paying for these types of school... the state of Wiscosin should be suing and shuting them down.

Well from what I have been told is that in China only K-8 is free but high school costs money. So it is probably no big deal for Chinese parents to pay for a private high school anyhow.

Well, there is smth to worry. Chinese are rly patriotic, everything they learn, they will carry back to China, to benefit their country. Thats their menthality. If you take a look at european universities, especially Music ones, like Hans-Eisler in Berlin, you'll see how many Chinese there are. So, It's time to learn chinese.

They are in Wauwatosa, WI. Wauwatosa is a very nice suburb of Milwaukee with great restaurants and the best mall in the state. They are 10 minutes from Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers) and 20 minutes from the Fiserv Forum (Milwaukee Bucks), 60 minutes from Road America (4.0 miles Road Course) in Elkhart Lake and 90 minutes from Chicago.
