So, you know how things are happening right now? Yeah, turns out they've always been happening, for a really long time. Here's the story of how a tyrannical government, propped up by unsustainable wealth inequality, was overthrown, and how even though a bunch of people died cruel and unusual deaths, it was actually okay because it really fucking funny.
I'm actually not going to link anything I talked about at the end there besides that TEXT-BASED MMORPG PLAYABLE ENTIRELY WITHIN A DISCORD SERVER. Yes, that's right, using state-of-the-art slime we were able to turn a Discord bot into a fully functioning video game! How about that shit, huh? Click this: / discord

"Oh wow, the French revolution! I've always been told how great and liberating it was!" 3 hours later, "What did they get done?"
@mnchtnyht362
@mnchtnyht362 3 года назад
They actually got a lot done, like an insane amount done. See, there's a "serious" way to talk about the French Revolution and a "silly" way to talk about the French Revolution, this was a silly way. Everything I say is true, but I focused on the hilarious elements and in the end made the whole thing look pointless-- But it really wasn't. It's just that what made the Revolution so, well, revolutionary, wasn't very funny. Just to set the record straight though, think about how much changed, not just in France but in Europe. First of all, France came to control insane amounts of territory, created new countries out of whole cloth, and destroyed the Holy Roman Empire, which was an ancient and once-powerful state. That alone would be significant, but what makes the fact that France controlled so much of Europe so revolutionary was the fact that they exported so much of their new Republican and Nationalist ideals. I didn't get into it in the lecture, because again it's not very funny, but this was the dawn of nationalism, and the implementation of rationalism into state politics. Wherever the French went, they "liberated" the occupants-- Proliferating the idea that they were these things called "citizens" with "rights". Obviously, in actuality they were ruled by an absolute monarch, but sometimes window dressing tastes really, really good. This French Revolution instilled a sense in the entirety of western Europe that "constitutions good, absolutism bad, nationalism good, arbitrary rule of kings bad, etc. etc.". Of course there was the counter revolution and those ideas were squashed by the mainstream reactionary governments, but these tensions would continuously bubble up again throughout the 1800s and set the stage for the World Wars to truly create our modern world. TL;DR lol yeah it was pointless

@@mnchtnyht362 How the british parliament system comes into play in the liberasation of Europe? I mean, they were never ruled by France, but they had a parliament and a prime minister (all things that took power from the monarch) well before the revolution. It's interesting that before Robert Walpole England was poor, so maybe there is a connection between being poor and becoming more liberal? Either "the feudal system can't support itself and will collapse" or "poor people are pissed so they want to change things NOW" thing?

@mnchtnyht362
@mnchtnyht362 4 года назад
I didn't mention this in the lecture, but one of the things that made Napoleon such a genius was his ability to compartmentalize every problem facing him. As the ruler of France, he had to deal with issues concerning the army, civil administration, the economy, religion, his personal life, the fallout from the past decade of instability, and more. He was able to deal with it all and be an effective ruler because he could focus on one topic at a time, to the complete exclusion of all other topics. He described it like opening and shutting drawers in a cabinet. Basically, I'm just drilling in that he was a fucking anime protagonist and no one can tell me otherwise. He'd be a Human Calculator, for sure.

I'll favorite all of the comments that correct the shit I got wrong. Remember guys, if you think any of what I talk about here sounds cool, do research on your own! This lecture's bibliography isn't actually that long, you can learn more about this fascinating and funny topic with minimal effort! Now that you know the general outline of the story, simply look into the specifics of individual parts you liked. Did you enjoy that short digression on the Haitian Revolution? Here's a whole podcast about it: thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/revolutions_podcast/2015/12/401-saint-domingue.html. Did you like the misadventures of Napoleon Bonaparte? Here's a link to my all-time favorite book: www.amazon.com/Napoleon-Life-Andrew-Roberts/dp/0143127853. I know this lecture isn't as high energy as my previous ones, but I hope you still enjoy it. This may be the last you see of me, Munchy, for a very long time. At least, this will be the last time I upload anything to this channel myself or directly contribute to new videos for a very long time. I know I've already been gone for a while, but I figured I should say something and make it official. Thank you for supporting me and liking the stuff I've made over these past five years or so. I would like to point out that Napoleon was so fucking charismatic and based, that despite constantly doing extremely degenerate shit all the time, people just loved him. His second wife Marie Louise, who was much younger and only married him for Austria to gain political power, was expecting a terrible life and hated the idea of marrying him, however after literally only knowing him for 2 weeks fell in love with him and constantly told her family in Austria how based he was.
