In this extensive series of lessons, Mark Wessels, author of "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum", takes you through the most fundamental aspects of playing the snare drum. "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum" is currently one of the top selling methods in the U.S., with over 12,000 units sold annually!
Even if you're a skilled percussionist, we recommend that you take the time to view each lesson and put into practice the concepts that Mark establishes from the beginning. Building upon the very basic skills, each new video will logically progress to higher levels of technical and reading abilities, introducing new exercises and rudiments along the way.

If you play outside on very hot days you want to use white lithium grease, not vaseline on the tension rods. Vaseline will heat up almost to a liquid and just run off and make a mess. Leaving the tension rods unlubricated. I'd recommend using white lithium grease all the time. It handles the high heat.

Howdy Ho Hey Mark Wessels! Great video from someone who taught me excellent drumline skills at Cleburne High School! You ROCK! :)

Soaking your lug rods in water and dish soap is a great way to get rusty lug rods. Use some kind of petrochemical solvent to dissolve any old grease gunk on them. Wear gloves and have plenty of ventilation. Use steel wool to clean them before installation.

Great video! Friendly tip: Copper grease is better for your tension rods rather than vaseline. It provides better lubrication, longevity and protection.

Maybe one day I'll have a snare drum. Same reason I watch video on the yacht maintenance.

Such new information. Such a fresh approach. Seriously, so fresh. Like a salad with year old vegetables. Dork.

This is a fantastic video for someone who is new to drumming and looking to learn. Why the hate on someone else's work? It's easy to go online and criticize someone else to make yourself feel important... it's a lot harder to put your money where your mouth is and create your own videos. I challenge you to do that, before surfing RU-vid, trolling other people's content.

Did I miss something? What happened with tensioning the reso head, is it same as batter? 3 , 1/2 turns for both sides?

@MrJordan707 The lever is indeed the throw-off, which is part of the strainer.

I have never broken a bottom head i don't know what he is doing to break a lot of them....... maybe using a 1 ply maybe... but even that shouldn't really ever break it should lose its tune before it breaks..

ok for that, but what about the snare head tuning?

I own this same snare drum... and the snare strainer is one of the worst I have ever had in 20+ years of playing... wont keep the strings up/tight... wont stay up.. and has hardly been used. anyone else have the same one with any issues?

I HAVE THAT SAME EXACT VIC FIRTH PICCOLO SNARE DRUM BUT I WOULD NEVER PUT THAT KIND OF TRASH OF A DRUM HEAD ON MY SNARE OR ANY OF MY DRUMS

Seating the head decreases the sound, I never seat my heads, plus they don't last that much longer

+Gabe Droppo they say that mostly just for the head to stay in tune longer. Does it really work? Who knows.

Please tell me what is the fresh approach? You haven’t introduced anything new to tuning a snare drum that the other 3 million RU-vid Chanel’s about snare drum tuning have.

Plus it's called a wire not a snare, then the "switch" is called the throw off.

#1 SOLUTION TO ALL SNARE DRUMS: FIRST take like 4 inches of DUCT TAPE and tape it to one end of the actual snares, underneath (as a mute). DONE. (Adjust how much tape covers the snares, as per your taste.) no more BOOMING excess.
