This was so informative! I love the scenery, the questions, the presentative of this whole video. I think we learned a lot about how Noh adapted to the modern day, even though this was not the explicit focus of the video. Do you think we could ever see a video of a Noh performance being conducted for commercial viewing? With the actual audience a performance brings in real life? Either way, keep up the great videos! We're all rooting for you and your dreams on presenting Japanese culture to the world!

I think another reason for the stomach voice is because the soul is there. Like in senpukku, they stab their stomach because it’s where their soul resides. When the performers use stomach voices, they are singing with their soul.

MM.I have to disagree with the interpretation of the Western singing style. Although some inexperienced people may sing in there head and throat this is not the case of a trained or seasoned individual. The sound is born in the gut or "Well" and powered from the diaphragm. Air is pushed up and then it is resonated in the throat (voice box) and head, particularly in the sinus or nasal cavity. This is also a technique used by Classically trained actors. This is the basis of Classical style singing in the west which has European roots. Another aspect is Indigenous tribes in Northern Canada who use a "Throat style" singing called Katajjaq which tells historic stories where two women or children will interact with eye contact and breath singing. It can sometimes be thought of as a childhood game. I love cultural aspects as one of the tools I use to learn the Japanese language. What makes this interesting is the difference between traditional Kabuki theatre (dynamic drama) and the Noh style (spiritual with masks).

Some aspects of the noh theater performances resemble ancient Greek theater, for example the use of masks, the use of the chorus which provide both narration and commentary on the actions of the characters, the presence of gods and other non human entities, the moralistic and philosophical bent of the plays (almost exclusively tragedies in ancientGreece) and many other things. It is important to note that while we think of ancient Greeks and Greece as western, they considered themselves oriental. Another cool fact Romans imitated Greek theater, but with a twist, they hated tragedies so they invented what today would be called slapstick musical comedy. Cool fact n. 2 the ancient Roman equivalent of the Kami, were the Numina, like the Kami Numina lived in a natural object or embodied a natural phenomenon, in other words everything had a spirit and a name, for example Venus (the beautiful one) before she was promoted to goddess used to be the Numen of the domestic garden, the Numen Flora helped plants flower while another Numen, Sterculius who was the spirit of manure helped plants to grow by nourishing them.

If I may: I have to disagree with your teacher about the differences between Western & traditional Japanese singing. Mostly the part where he says: that the “head voice” being Western singing, and “stomach voice” being Japanese singing. Well, not quite disagree. More like: It’s not nuanced enough of an explanation about the differences, in my honest opinion. (Also: Just so you know, it’s not really called a “Stomach voice”. It is actually called a chest voice in the west. It does feel like you are singing from your stomach, but it is called a Chest voice. 😉👍) I think the difference is more the usage of the head voice in western singing compared to traditional Japanese. ~Traditional Japanese singing seems to be mainly “Chest Voice” and trying to keep your pitch low, even when you go up to higher notes. ~Western singing usually has combinations between: the Head voice, the Chest voice & mixes (the area between the 2 voices). Which will make a voice sound higher at some portions and lower at others. And we do not try to keep the pitch of our voice low. ~The purpose if the songs is also quite different. Most western songs are for entertainment only. But traditional Japanese songs performed like this are there to tell stories from mythology & ancient history. Perserving those stories in song form. They are more like the songs you would hear in churches and such in the west. Also: In traditional Japanese singing it does seem like you are both trying to add power behind each word, but also to try not to sing really loud (you do not have to fill a concert hall with your voice). That is different in Western singing as we are being taught to sing loudly, and put as much power in our voice as we can comfortably (and sometimes even uncomfortably) can (we are taught to sing as if we have to fill the concert hall with our voices). So i think the real differences are more like: ~Traditional Japanese singing has to be low pitched, Western singing does not have a rule for pitch. ~Traditional Japanese Singing has a mostly if complete absence of head voice in the singing ( At least that is what I think. ^^; ). ~Traditional Japanese Singing is most often in a large room for relatively small crowds (max of 20 people, perhaps?), so the singers do not have to sing very loudly, just loud enough to have clear notes and you can hear the pronunciation. Western singing often is for much larger audiences and thus we have to sing a lot louder and maybe even too loud. ~Traditional Japanese Singing is both used for entertainment but mostly to tell stories. Fictional; historical; or mythological. Each song is important for the culture and preservation of those stories. Western singing can be about anything, but most of the times they are for entertainment only. We do tell lil stories with some songs, but most of the time it is about feelings, not actual events etc. I do not know if that is truly all correct, but: from my own experience in my own singing studies; listening to the performances of this one and that you have performed + the explanation of your teacher and a little more research online (not much unfortunately as I have to cook dinner. Dx) this is what I can think off at this time. ^^; If I misunderstood anything though, I would love to hear it though. It’s always great to learn more about these kinds of things after all. ^^ 👍❤
