This week we are making paper spinners. They are similar to spinning tops. Perhaps your loved one played with a spinning top as a child!
These are very fun to make and this project offers a great opportunity to collaborate and to have some fun together. The patterns that the spinning creates when it is in motion are also mesmerizing. No two are the same.
For this project you will need:
-an old CD
-a sheet of cardstock paper (any colour)
-a pencil
-scissors
-markers
-a gluestick
-a craft knife or box cutter knife*
-a coin (such as a nickel or quarter)**
Have fun!
*Please be careful with the step that uses the knife!
** In the video I mention that the sides of the paper rip a bit as you push the coin through. This is okay and seems to help hold the coin in better. On samples where I made the cut too long, the coin tended to sit inside at more of an angle, making it difficult for the spinner to actually spin.

* Please note* The information I present in my videos is based on the therapeutic benefits of art. This is not the same as art therapy, but rather art as a therapy. The practice of art therapy is done with a certified art therapist in a safe environment.
Without doubt, the long road of dementia comes with a lot of big emotions and other hurdles; for the person with the dementia; the caregiver(s); and other friends and family members. Mental health is very important and I strongly advise that you speak with a qualified professional - whether they be an art therapist, a music therapist, counselor, psychologist, or any other mental health professional who is certified in their field - to negotiate the challenges that you may be facing.
