Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma (who previously portrayed Suzie Costello in Torchwood) would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

To be honest, if i wasn't already a fan of the show, this episode wouldn't have convinced me to keep watching. I understand there's a new audience and so they've got to introduce things essential to doctor who but you'd think RTD would write a story for both old and new viewers.

I got confused by the Bogeyman too. When the Doctor basically started saying that the Bogeyman was one of the babies, it made me think I had missed something when I got distracted by a news notification on my phone. That alone, says something about the episode. For most Doctor Who, when it first broadcasts, you’d have to set a bomb off next door for me to be diverted (less so for Chibnall’s era, except for Flux which had my full attention). So, not a great start. I liked parts of the episode, and hated others (the butterfly gag being my most hated). Overall, it didn’t grip me like I expect from Doctor Who.

I think Space Babies would have been fine mid-season, but was a bit of a sh!te idea for a first episode which should have had more of a grand opening vibe. Something sh!te happening in the Jurassic period would have been significantly better than this.

The Jinx Monsoon episode has given me the theory that The Doctor is actually part of the ToyMakers Pantheon, i think theyre going to reveal he is litterally the god of time and is litterally called The Time Lord thrn when they were found by Techteun at the boundary thats where the Gallifreyans get the name Time Lords that would be a good connect and fix of The Timeless Child and also feed it into the 60th in a very relevant way

I thought the first two episodes were quite weak cos they both started off great then slowly derailed. Spade Babies had a great set up, great dialogue and then suddenly rushed to the finish with a disgusting idea and skipped some emotional beats like explaing how tf rhe bogeyman is one of the babies cos they need to 'save them all'. Then, the devil's chord started off brilliant set up, interesting idea, but moved too quickly to be able to process what was going on.

I think they might have realised that Space Babies was weak, hence they have double billed the first two episodes on opening weekend. Personally I thought it was better than many of the worst episodes in each series that Russell has written previously, which sounds like damning it with faint praise, but by the end of the episode I could see why Russell wrote it and I thought that the direction was alright, and that the actors were brilliant for making it into an alright episode, but there are reasons why sayings like "don't work with children and animals" came into fruition and the gimmick wore thin quite quickly, despite how cute they all were. I have also now watched the second episode and I agree it was markedly better. I wonder if the Tricksters brigade / Toymakers legion will feature throughout Ncuti's seasons or if it will be resolved within 8 episodes? We can't help feeling short changed by having so few stories nowadays, when I was a kid a 14 episode series of 25 minutes would give us 350 minutes of Who per year, 8x45 = 360 (plus a Christmas special=420), but the stories run/develop quicker/faster nowadays so I should be happy, but nearly 20 years ago we got 14x45 = 585+ minutes of Who per year. Hopefully the quality will remain good, and ideally keep improving week by week, I'm certainly very happy with the casting of most roles in this series. Everyone is performing really well in my eyes.
@kbg12ila

I disagree that it's a better opener than Space Babies. The opening episode needs a much simpler threat and plot so we can really be introduced to Ruby and her introduction to the Doctors world. Similar to Partners in Crime.

Devil's Chord was extremely good. I'm concerned this first episode will turn viewers off. Because the difference for me is a 6/10 v an 8/10. Space Babies was weak tbh, and a lot of repetition of Space Babies not actually being particularly funny. Here's hoping enough stick for Devil's Chord to be convinced, cause that was awesome.

After 3 series, of Chibnall trying to give Doctor Who a more serious tone and instead making it boring, we were well overdue for a hefty serving of silliness. Also, it was nice to see the Doctor play the role of a reassuring adult to these kids. We never got that with Jodie's Doctor (also Chibnall's fault), with anyone of any age. Plus, the Doctor said he has to go visit Star Trek🖖🏾. Seriously people, was RTD, sending a message to Paramount?

I saw it about 3 hours after broadcast on Disney+, my wife was napping, forgot it was today, so I waited patiently so we could watch together. Which is what many in the UK will do if they want to see it with non-streamer family I suppose. I liked it but wow was it a different take on how to feel open and honest, yet also be evasive more cleverly with Ruby. He tells her all the need to knows up front, so he can just move past the revelations and not think about them again. Far more healthy than agonizing what to tell or not to tell. I did pick up the political messaging, and I loved it! And then we had a farting space station... so Yeah RTD2 is a lot like RTD1 began. Hopefully it matures just as quickly. As an American the weirdest thing for me is we pronounce Boogey like Book or look, not like Bow or low, so that is the only thing that might leave some of us from the States scratching our heads for the second or two before the penny drops. Complaints? The Sonic just HAPPENS to fit that computer perfectly w/no adjustments? The monster issue is tied up easily and hardly at all. I mean you ran from it all episode, then save it, but you don't think it gets up and attacks again? Feels too easy. That's it really. I give it 7.8 of 10, so solid but not groundbreaking.

I am Disappointed it was a very light weight episode to start a new series. Ncuti has definitely got his Doctor on course to be one of the best. For me this episode had a Fear Her feel about it. When an episode is as weak as this is( that's my opinion only) but the Doctor still comes over as a Strong characterisation the right actor is in part now that bodes well for the future.

I have just watched this episode on sunday afternoon, and i thought it was good, although i do wonder why this and the previous episodes involves babies. However, it was well done, and I like the babies talking, the butterfly segment, and the Doctor giving Ruby the Tardis key. I think that this new partnership will work well.

I’m gutted. Things felt off with who from 60th and I stuck with it hoping it would get better and feel more like who again. But I didn’t like it but preferred it to the devils chord not a fan of the supernatural direction they going. I had said before the 60th was my off ramp reluctantly i have to admit I wish I had done. Going to miss Dr who have enjoyed it for years now and yes even chibnells era. Good luck with rest of series/season guys

This episode really did not sit right with me. As a story, it was a flawed concept bogged down by the fact that babies that young cannot inherently act. I did not find it boring. But it was the most cringe worthy Doctor Who Story I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen the one with the Bertie basset monster. I’ve seen the absorbaloff. I’ve seen Orphan 55. This was worse. The bogey and poo jokes were just too far in the childish direction. It treaded so many beats we’d seen before and did not do them better. Ncuti Gatwa is a decent doctor but sadly, I just don’t buy Ruby as a character and I don’t think Millie knows how to make a character seem real. Overall this is the fourth worst story I’ve ever seen. Only beating Warriors Of The Deep, The Visitation and Delta And The Bannerman and really only because those stories are so boring that I cannot remember anything about them. Space Babies was memorably bad and that is only mildly better then being boring.

This episode was absolutely bonkers and a little bit on the cheap side writing wise but I am Totally in love with Ncuti’s doctor and the season ark feels like it’s going to be great. RTD may not be my favourite but I’m trusting the process.

RTD1’s first two episodes had goofy humour in them but they were much more weighted to the darker more serious side I want from DW. I’m still optimistic about this season but if episode 3 is goofy too I’m gonna be very worried.

Only seen episode one so far and all I can say is “Oh dear!” Thinking the people across the world on Disney+ who tuned in to hear the Doctor say “babies - Space Babies” about 200 times during the episode where nothing happened apart from a bloke in a dodgy mask then no doubt after five minutes switching it off thinking what a load of silly nonesense. Makes me think “Fear Her” with David Tennant is comparatively a classic episode and watching that twice was more than enough. Rose was a proper reboot whereas this was like a reboot but viewers would have to go back to watch the Christmas Special or they’d be like what?! It was a mashup of The End of the World and Rose but without anything new or exciting to offer sadly. About as much peril as a packet of crisps. Perhaps they’re aiming this version of the show to the same age group as those who watch Postman Pay but I can’t imagine any adults new to Who across the world dying it tune into episode two or even watching to the end. Absolutely gutted at such a weak start to the series after waiting so long with such high hopes. Just hope that it does better across the world than it did in our household. As it got the “flush it down the loo - Boom-tish award all round at our house! 😢

I liked it. Nothing special but that’s not a bad thing. I feel like people forget that not every episode of Doctor Who needs to be a masterpiece. However the title sequence is completely ruined with the music completely out of sync

im so confused how people like rtd2. like, its turned into a cringy childs show, and its frankly embarrasing to classic who and previous doctors. Space babies? singing golblins? what the hell is happening to this show?!?! I think people are in denial about how crappy the show is now. Ncuti Gatwas doctor is great. all the characters are amazing, but the storylines, plot and the entire show itself has gone to the dogs. heck, for all i know the next episode is gonna be about singing space dogs.

Dreadful start. My own thought is, it better get better as the American audience especially aren't going to stick around if this is the tone for the next two seasons. And especially as it was reported yesterday Disney are not committing to any more seasons apart from the two paid for until they access the two and deem it a success,. Well after this start, well erm yeah.

Absolutely WEIRD...talking babies🤪 then the political insert....we are who we are🏳️‍🌈 and immigrants have to ship themselves to saftey...leave real world issues out. As for the 2nd episode...i didn't like the musical number at the end, however, MAESTRO was extremely WELL ACTED. I mean Award winning acting. Ruby as a companion gives me Clara vibes, so liking her so far.

Doctor Who has always included real word messages, pretty much all fiction does. I don’t see why anyone would have a problem with such positive messages as “we’re all unique and that’s a good thing” or “maybe we should do more to help refugees”.
@Onesocialistboi
@Onesocialistboi 2 месяца назад
You can’t leave real world issues out especially in a show like this. There is a bit of a pro refugee message in this episode but do you actually take issue with that? Personally I’d want my country to take in literal babies who’d die otherwise. As for the 🏳️‍🌈 message what you referring to there? It’s just mentioned Ruby has a lesbian friend that’s all I recall. I also get Clara vibes from Ruby and she’s my favourite companion so I’m naturally a Ruby fan already.
