One of the key doctrines of the Bible taught in the book of Genesis is that there is a pattern of creation based on male and female. All living beings, whether human or animal create in their own image after their own likeness and kind. Latter-day Saints, teach that we are created in the image of God, male and female. We are sons and daughters of beings that we look like, not some genderless spirit force. This means God looks like us and also. Jesus is created in the image of his Father who is God the Father of us all.
Non-LDS Christian or mainstream scholars teach that we are not really created in the image of God because the Trinity is a bodiless and genderless being, that has only transforms itself into a metaphorical father and son to meet the narrative of the Bible. The underlying doctrines teach that mankind is not like the genderless Trinity God at all but somehow a semblance of some of its attributes.
