Oh, totally agree! Emus and Ostriches are the scariest birds on the planet. At least to me. Really, besides crocodiles, are they not the closest things to dinos that we have today? Weird, way too big, unpredictable, totally disregarding towards humans, and I'm so very happy they cannot fly. Yet, like you, here I am, hoping this dino that I have no desire to see up close and personal ever again (yes, have been among a few in my time, very unnerving) makes it and even warming my heart seeing them together so sweetly. Better him than me! I mean, I would help it hatch if I knew how, because I do love animals and nature, but then I'd immediately hand it off before it could look me in the eye! lol That would give me nightmares!

It is ok to laugh. That is great about animals. They aren't whiny. If they recognize that some stuff doesn't work like they want it to they may react a little "frustrated" but other than some humans they don't sit in a corner and think "oh... poor me" instead they keep trying and can overcome a lot and not just survive but have a great life. So it is ok if you loved when he looked funny, he won't mind.

I am working at a golf course this summer and the wildlife we share space with is beyond extraordinary. I've had to be a mum to two hatchlings. One was found all alone, nowhere near a nest, and the other fell out of a nest. By watching your beautiful videos for years now, I was able to step up and help them to survive. It has been the most rewarding experience that came at a much needed time in my life. Alwyn, I have always truly believed that you are an Angel that walks amongst us, and I could not be more grateful to you. As soon as I am able to, I am going to join so that I can donate. My husband and I have a small farm where we raise an assortment of barnyard fowl. This year one of our goslings had a difficult hatch and ended up splay-legged. I used a hair tie to make a hobble for her, with a piece of first aid tape in the middle to make two separate loops for her legs to go through. With daily exercise (I sat on the bed with her and we practiced) after 3 days she was standing and walking on her own! I ended up keeping the hobbles on for about 10 days until her legs no longer splayed out when the hobble was removed. Right now, a little over 3 months later, she's outside living her best life with her sisters and her biological parents. Looking at her now, you'd never know she ever had a problem. We named her Hobbs (for hobbles. Her sisters are Calvin and Tweek) and the 5 of them are definitely the royalty of the barnyard! Even the Guineas don't mess with them 😄 We love those babies dearly, and even though we raise birds to sell, we cannot bring ourselves to part with those goslings, they're too special to us, so they will remain here for life. ❤ Side note, while I was watching this video, my youngest dog, who's being trained to be a livestock guardian, got extremely concerned when he heard the hatching emu's cries - he crawled all 100 lbs of his puppy-self into my lap and watched the video with me while he tried to figure out how to get the distressed baby out of my phone 😄

I raised from the egg a baby cockatiel who was splay legged, Rudy -- his two clutch mates were fine, but Rudy wasn't even expected to live. He was born on Christmas Eve, so I called him Rudy after "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,' who was also 'different' but valuable!!! Rudy thrived, thanks mainly to my fantastic vet, Dr. Robinson, who kept fashioning different leg casts and splints for him as he grew, and who educated me on caring for him. Rudy ended up being the sweetest, bravest, most curious and active little guy, and my special soul mate (for my ailing Dad, as well.) In fact, Rudy passed not long before my Dad did and it was such a double tragedy, my heart has never recovered, but I am so grateful and blessed to have had them both...This video melts my heart and I am so happy at the love and care given to this marvelous, if splay legged, chick!!! thank you for you kindness, love, and video

reminder that the number rule of hatching is that you do not interfere as you can endanger the life of the chick. hatching is a long process for a reason, you can't brute force it. they're still attached to membranes within the shell and if these are ruptured, which can easily be done if you don't know what you're doing while yanking the shells of, this can be fatal as they'll bleed out. if you interfere it has to be as a last resort and as little as physically possible which is what he did! he only helps out because he's highly experienced and this isn't something you should repeat for yourself. an exhausted, distressed chick is better than an injured one or worse. it's far too high risk. you leave them alone for a reason.
@Tsakeli
@Tsakeli 3 месяца назад
And he always cautions that, but HE is an expert who knows how to be very slow and has materials to stop bleeding on hand if needed. He has a video about it outright warning against helping eggs unless you know exactly what you're doing and it's obvious the chick WILL die without help.

In dogs and cats they can have a similar condition called swimmers syndrome. Besides trying to use bands on the legs, they build a sided track that keeps the legs confined and offers more support for standing and walking. Once the tendons and muscles are strengthened, they are able to learn to walk normally.

Egg hatching is a developmental step. If he had helped too soon, besides the risk of the membranes getting ripped at the wrong time, there's a risk that the chick won't be strong enough to live, without the hormones triggered by the chick doing the work of cracking the egg. Mother birds have instinct about when to help, and human helpers have to go by experience and guess. Since it turned out all right, it was all right.
@StoicVeR
@StoicVeR 3 месяца назад
this is his field of study, and emu eggs are especially difficult to incubate let alone hatch. The egg is so thick if he attempted to intervene sooner, he could have very easily caused the chick bleed out if one of the essential membranes was damaged in the surrounding sack. The emu shell is so thick and especially the membrane inside is like leather, and the outer membranes drying out can take a week, depending on the bird and its development. The main thing about eggs is to make sure the chick inside makes the initial crack, that way they don't suffocate. That's the number one reason for chicks expiring, the second is premature membrane rupture from 'assistance'. And the faulty hatching was a result of the splay leg the chick came pre-installed with, otherwise, the hatching would have been routine. This is a chick that would never have survived in the wild without help first getting out of the egg and then its harness to get the legs in the correct order. He provided the essential intervention without causing irreparable harm to the chick, and get the lil dude walking

As someone who grew up with undiagnosed adhd, anxiety and subsequent depressive episodes, I somehow found myself identifying greatly with this poor struggling baby 🥺 I feel like a lot of things, that should have come easy to me, were always an endless struggle and I continuously was a few steps behind in Development compared to my peers. I‘ve always felt shame about being „other“ and feeling „defect“, even though things have gotten a lot, lot better! But seeing this bird struggle the same way I did, literally being a few steps behind everyone else but in the end, with sufficient help, care and his own willpower, being able to join the flock again like one of them, that gave me so much hope and pride for myself. The love, patience, trust and pride Arwyn has for this little bird is something I want to have for myself too. If a baby bird deserves it, so do I. 🥰

Albert was the original chick that he saved many many years ago in a video, he's been documenting every case of a rough hatching and the animals recovery ever since for years now. I assume he's a professional bird breeder given how many he seems to be hatching out regularly of a variety of species. You can always expect a few a year if you're doing that as a professional career.
