Episode 3 of Marvel’s What If… poses the question What If The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes? And the answer to that turns out to be a lot of murders. This episode manages to kill off Tony Stark’s Iron Man, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, Bruce Banners Hulk, Thor’s///Thor as well as Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow. With all these deaths and Nick Fury the only Avenger left standing the stakes have never been higher in this universe that does not matter! Anyways thanks for watching, have a good one.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard anyone mentioned that scene from Antman where Hank Pym states he can’t take any more Pym particles or else his brain will be effected. I think that’s the reason Hank ends up so messed up at the end

Yeah, you're on the money. That's been a long running thing in the comics and the Yellow Jacket persoma is usually worn by Hank Pym when his mind is damaged by particles.

Hank Pym never feels center stage in the MCU, but Douglas always brings that perfect rage boiling just under the surface. It's interesting to see him get to portray the Hank that would totally happen if he lost the last of his family.

totally agree. i honestly wasn't that big on the first 2 episodes. i thought they were fine i guess(the 2nd being a bit better then the first) but this episode i really enjoyed. certainly was a bummer to see the avengers die but on the other hand, i'm excited now to see where this series is going(because it's obviously all going to be a shared arc).

I really like that this episode still stuck to the “What of one thing changed” formula. This time they just left us to figure it out. Alternate title for the episode: “What if Hope van Dyne became a SHIELD agent”.

I just wish they showed it as a flash back or something. Because even at the end of the episode I was kind of still left wondering if that was the initial change that set everything off or if there was still new information to learn.

There is a line about Hope dying in Odessa and Black Widow mentioned about Winter Soldier attack in Odessa (In Winter Soldier) so maybe, Pierce had her killed, and then manipulated Hank to destroy the Avenger Initiative which could impact Hydra's plans.

Yep, I also thought that, also. I personally pegged Crossbones and the other Hydra S.H.I.E.L.D. guys to be the culprits. The giveaway that it was not Hydra, though, was how easily the Hulk was killed. No way it could be any normal bad guy, because if they knew how to kill the Hulk, it'd sure be hard to explain why they never bothered to take him out in the normal continuity.

Well, there is the episode based on 2008’s Iron Man where Killmonger saves Tony from that missile and Don Cheadle is reprising his role in What If so maybe? I found it satisfying seeing Ruffalo as Norton as the recast was such a continuity itch for me.

Agreed, if there all connected. I think we should all accept What If’s? Are just gonna be What if? Since we’ve already punched holes in the timelines. I said the same thing for Caps Shield in the ice, can’t happen if Cap Carter, is Cap and Rogers ended up as the Hydra Stomper.

@@bradlewis9050 Oh no, I agree that they aren't connected, but still, in this episode's timeline the Maximoff twins couldn't be experimented on since there's no Battle of New York that leads to SHIELD (Hydra) possessing the Mind Stone. I think every episode is a new and unconnected timeline, and in the end The Watcher's gonna reunite them somehow.

@@ge2719 I would argue it's less that you can't make good action movies based on classic monsters, and more that you just need to make good movies. What we got instead had the classic Studio influence / trying to make a series and not just a single good movie. The key thing about the original Iron Man was it was a self-contained story it only set up a multiple movie franchise implications the very last post credit scene that you could have missed and not Miss some key part of the main movie story. You saw that with the Garfield Spiderman movies, which were so eager to setup multiple franchises I sacrificed everything else including just making a good Standalone film. I'd argue DC had much the same problem.

When you think about it, it makes sense that Hank Pym was angry at shield for the death of Hope but to make that anger stronger, it’s mentioned for the original yellow jacket from the ant man movie that the Pym particles made him go mad which is also shown with hank pym who is showned with anger and madness although keeping his intelligence the same as usual.

Now we can say that the movie "incredible hulk" was set in an alternative universe. Everything still happened the same way as our universe, except Bruce Banner looked different. Bam, fixed it. Kinda figured it out when Black Widow visited Betty Ross to examine the needle thingy But still enjoyed the rest of the episode. Especially with what happened to the Hulk & the ending with Loki Solid episode. My favorite so far. Definitely in the minority here but I was underwhelmed with the previous 2

Love this episode, not 100% Hank Pym started murdering purely out of vengeance he probably started working super hard on that new Antman/YellowJacket suit to make sure nothing like what happened to his daughter happened again and then the bonus 2 years of exposure to the Pym particle made him lose his mind like he says in Antman 1. This is probably something most people saw straight away but I didn't so the episode hit different after I "realised" that

I think that has to be from a different universe since here Hank still uses the original ant man helmet design for Yellowjacket while in that episode the giant helmet has the look from the ant man movie. I suppose that comes from a universe where Darren Cross experimented on giant man tech

And in Endgame, Antman, and Dr.Strange, they mention a different universe. This is honestly seems more like a fun anthology series same way comics make non cannon stories all the time

OK spoilers... I SERIOUSLY predicted that Ghost from Ant Man and the Wasp was going to be the killer when I watched this. She could turn invisible and swap the syringe with a poison without anyone knowing. It would've also explained how Barton was killed plus she had motive considering she was used as a living weapon and assassin for SHIELD that Fury may not have known about considering Hydra's infiltration.

No one seems to remember that Rhodey broke up Tonys drunken birthday party and took the War Machine armor the Sunday night before Tony is nursing his hangover inside the big donut! When Fury started collecting Caps at the end I wanted to see or hear that War Machine would be a suitable Iron Man replacement! Actually thinking back to Iron Man 2 and Fury turning Tony down for the Avenger Initiative why didn’t they just enlist War Machine?

That's always been a bit of contention for me ever since the first Avengers film. Rhodey, the trained fighter pilot with his own souped up Iron Man suit is right there. They really didn't need to ask for Tony, like at all. Though to be fair to this particular episode, he would've still been under the remote control of Whiplash and/or Justin Hammer. So those two might be why he doesn't show up at any point.

@@Manakuuchiha True, but that was the Main universe Tony. This is an alternate universe Hank, you could put all the negative aspects of Hanks character in the comics and put it into the evil variant. You wouldn't even need him to abuse Janent, him drifting away from Hope and pushing her away due to the loss of his wife, to losing her to would make for compelling stuff. Honestly you could have him appear in an Atman movie and have Douglas play two versions of himself.
