Another day, another video on acoustics by a major RU-vidr, but does this one actually have some merit to it? LinusTechTips explores the Elgato Wave Panels and whether or not they're worth it.

Please let me correct you in one aspect: You don't measure the sound absorption coefficient of dampening material in an anechoic chamber. In reality it is quite the other way around: You do your measurements in a room with the highest possible reflection rate! Preferably a room in any non-rectangular shape, with concrete walls and ceramic tiles on each surface...

Just discovered your channel. I'm also an LTT viewer and professional audio-engineer. You summed up most of the thoughts I had when I originally watched this video. Linus is great but every time he starts to talk about audio (or his team) I get a little squeamish. I actually wrote him an email on the subject not too long ago LOL.

Professional studios do not use foam panels. They use 4" and 6" Rockwool panels.

I enjoyed your video, it was a bit like reading through citations in a publication. I'm a drummer who also has a modest recording studio. Sound dampening has been something I've been experimenting for over a decade, and just about everything you mention here has held true in my cave-man style experiments. Trial and error has been necessary as even when we know the theory of how to absorb energy at different frequencies, the devil is in the details. One of the most important things, and most difficult to do, has been to decouple wall surfaces; a room within a room sort of idea, paying extreme attention not to tie the inner wall to the outer wall. Even this struggles with very low frequencies. High frequencies are rather easy to absorb and dissipate, at least in my universe. Cheers!

Thanks for this video; there indeed is so much mis-information on the internet about sound/audio in general. So much so I sometimes doubt my own knowledge. (Could post this comment on your vox eq video as well!) I find it sometimes hard to be needing to 'defend' the audio side of post-production on the 'do's, don'ts and why's'.

If you enjoy debunking content, I highly recommend Ethan Winer's videos. He has some really good stuff on common misconceptions and myths around audio.

What are the best books, websites or videos to learn about acoustics? I am trying to optimize a product for acoustic properties and you seem to understand it very well. Where do or did you go to to learn more about acoustics? I have a technical background and I understand the basics already. Now I would like to go one step further.

A local acoustics shop has panels that are class A and are cheaper per square meter than the Elgato panels... not a difficult choice

This is a great video. What product then would you recommend for conference rooms

I'm a big fan of GIK Acoustics products. They're a bit pricey, but in my opinion they're much more attractive than standard foam panels, and you can probably get away with only 5-10% coverage and accomplish what you need.

I'm contemplating diy fiberglass panels. If you know how well that works comparitively to other materials, I would appreciate input. I want something cost affective, that has a wide band obsorbtion. Is this realistic on a budget. I'm aware it will take more for bass obsorbtion, so I'm not focusing on that right now. 200hz and up

Fiberglass and rockwool panels are great options if you want to go the DIY route. Like I mention in the video, you want to go with manufacturers who publish acoustic information on their product. Fortunately, most insulation manufacturers do publish that information on the data sheets for their products. Generally the most expensive part is building the frames for the material.

Keep in mind that fiberglass and rockwool is highly carcinogenic when inhaled. You should definetely enclose them in plastic and melt that shut. Some people say the plastic will reflect a lot of the higher frequencies though. Personally I decoded against taking this risk.
