After years of devastating pregnancy losses that mirrored a lackluster art career, Josie Lewis gave up. She gave up trying to grow her family and gave up trying to be an artist. She began to focus on the most elementary elements of art, like color and texture, and learned that the resulting flow state helped her work through the grief. When she put process videos of her work online, she discovered a global audience. Learn more about art, grief, and flow in this beautiful and inspirational talk. Josie Lewis is an artist working in sculpture, painting, mixed media, and video. Her artwork can be found in the St Paul Union Depot, the Minneapolis/St Paul Airport, and in the private collections of General Mills, University of Minnesota, and Minneapolis Public Schools. In 2017, she began sharing videos of her daily art practice on Instagram, sparking a conversation around what is (and is not) art on the internet. To date, her videos have more than 1 billion views, and her social media audience has grown to over 1.3 million followers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I was never an “artist” growing up. Never picked up a paintbrush, never tried to draw. In 2018 I was going through my 3rd round of treatment for severe depression after a suicide attempt following my divorce. Not quite the same as losing a child, but a form of grief nonetheless. When Josie said “the process of making art was far more important than the result”, this is what it felt like when I tried watercolors. Hearing her talk about “flow” and saying “I found myself needing to make art just to survive” put what I felt into words; as I worked on art, my heart gradually healed. I learned how to move forward with life. Thank you so much Josie for your work but also for your courage, your creativity, and opening your heart ❤️

This is a year after your comment but I just read yours and I have nearly the same story. Wow! If you ever see this, hit me up. I started drawing after getting some recovery from a disability similar to what you mentioned you went through. I was able to say screw it, I’ve always wanted to be an artist and I admitted I was an artist. Finally. I never let myself draw because I was convinced that I’d never be good enough. There are so many other professional artists in my family that I compared myself before I even tried. Today I’m a full time artist, I get pretty good feedback so I think I’m not that bad. Either way I’m in flow nearly everyday. I think about this TedTalk literally daily. Flow is like my anchor and my coping mechanism. Art and flow saved me too. Thanks for your story!!

Hi Josie, Mimi here. I never heard of the actual term Flow. It makes so much sense. I am one of the artists you have inspired. I'm pretty sure I'm in Flow when I watch your vids, too. They are hypnotizing, love watching them. I first commented to you on IG after a break from art due to family deaths and multiple surgeries. You responded to me with positive encouragement. I've got 2 more surgeries, one big one. Then I can heal, move forward with my life and art, hooray!. Life is such a treasure. Josie, you are a generous, caring artist and person. Thank you so much. I appreciate you more than you will ever know. Have a great day!. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤗🌼🍃✌&❤ P.S. As far as the haters go, I didn't know there is a way to do art wrong, haha.

Your TED Talk is right on the money! That flow function is to my mind what the best teachers help students achieve. Ms Lewis describes a state of being I am in search of during my quest for dialogue, connection through pouring artistry. I get there, I think by following the paint -- whatever it does assuming technique and fluid consistency were at least good enough. That's the fun for me so far. Your comparison blog piece about similarities between artists and comics is introduced me to the fun of pleasing people which for me will help me to market and sell my art because it has a humanistic function, rather than a dry business or economic function. It's a matter of psychological semantics my spirit requires as an introvert. And, your work is so beautiful! I love color and your work is very colorful and dynamic: It's alive!

Oh my gosh Josie you’re such a legend! A billion views, your work looks “ranbow-y” and it was one of the factors that brought me back into art 3+ years ago... I was tired of seeing the same booty pics on Instagram, when your trending colour videos popped in my discover page!!! I had something that finally resonated with me. Over the years you’ve shown yourself to be such a graceful role model in the way you interact with your fans and the (non fans) Aka haters. I was talking to friends about what you mentioned about flow and the prefrontal cortex... and I’ve started researching it too! Makes so much sense, when I am feeling stressed, art flow, exercise flow, cooking and baking flow help me cope and when I’m out of flow, my reasoning brain 🧠 has a chance to think with a new perspective Kindest regards from your biggest fan in Cape Town Nabeelah 🌸

Fantastic topic and presentation. Being a retired finance executive, the librarian was a major influence in my life. I couldn’t sleep as she talked all night about everything I do wrong going back to my early years. When I retired, I wanted to find the artist in me. Started with pottery which was a mess. Switched to watercolor and have been doing it for 5 years. Love it. I find FLOW there. Your presentation named what I am doing, and now I know what it is. Thank you.❤
