We thought it was finally time we addressed the question we get asked every single day - is it safe to melt plastic at home? In this video, we cover the importance of cleaning and separating plastic types, as well as which plastics you should and shouldn't work with. We also show you the way in which we've tackled this in our workshop, including ventilation, respirators and fume extractors. All with the help of the weirdly familiar-looking, Dr. Plastic!
We've put this video together as a guide using our experience in working directly with recycled plastic over the past 3-4 years. We would always encourage you to do your own research if you are unsure, but we have linked everything we spoke about below for your reference. As with anything, it also comes down to your comfort level. If you don't feel safe in what you are doing then remember there is no such thing as 'too safe'. Open all your windows, get fume extraction sorted and don that respirator!

Interesting video! I'm always happy to see content creators put effort into safety. I'd like to chip in on the respirators a little, particularly the "no leaks" part. Facial hair breaks the seal the mask is trying to get on your face, and supposedly tanks the effectiveness of them way more than you'd expect. It's bad enough that the use of these respirators is banned at my workplace for anyone who hasn't shaved within the last 8 hours. Instead we're required to use respirators that cover your entire face. I believe you guys are totally fine given the fact that you're taking multiple safety precautions, but hopefully this is helpful for anyone who wants to take their health serious and planned on only using a respirator.

Remember, Full Face Respirators still REQUIRE the user to be clean shaven in all areas where the seal is being made. Example: Beard/neck, and side burns/temples. All hair needs to be away from the sealing areas. Thank You for bringing this point out. Good Luck

I love the maker part of all this, and used to re-use the sprues from model airplane kits for things. The funny thing about recycling is that oil companies want us to think it can or is being done, but its actually not economical. I guess finding a market to make it profitable could change that. Even glass is not worth it in many areas. I think the answer is make retaining wall parts from plastics so we can just build great pyramids of trash our ancestors can marvel at.

Thanks to your channel, I have an idea for a cheap (for me) quasi respirator. I have an old CPAP machine lying around that no longer keeps correct pressure for helping someone sleep. I'll set the CPAP as far away as possible, with a fan blowing fresh air on it.

That would depend on the type of plastic from which they are made. This is an excellent inquiry addressing the issue of closing the loop more completely.

You should make a follow-up on polymer degradation. The video may encourage people to "help the environment", go around and collect plastic and melt them at home, risking their own and their environment's health. When plastics are exposed to radiation, heat, stress, substances etc, they can change their atomic structure (rubbers become slimy or brittle, ABS breaks like glass), but does melting fix that or does it make it more dangerous? I also have seen some mixed plasics, which say on the label something like "ABS+GF" (with glass fibre). Do manufacturers mix in stuff with other plastics too?

I applaud your efforts and ingenuity. I completely agree that single use plastic is both an environmental and health danger. And the same applies to CO2 emissions. I have enjoyed your videos for quite some time. I have considered establishing a similar operation and thought about various methods to accomplish the recycle, prep and remanufacture process. I have noticed that your operation has grown and you now employ more machinery to aid your efforts. I’m wondering if and how you have worked out the energy consumption versus the recycling/repurposing output equation. Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.

We haven’t worked out the specific energy consumption, but we do ensure that we employ a 100% renewable electricity tariff to ensure we are not creating a demand for more fossil fuel usage

Hey, I've been researching a lot into plastic recycling, and have seen that other countries have to do a lot of this processing by hand in industries that aren't supported by regulatory agencies like OSHA to protect their workers. Plastell would be a wonderful work multiplier for countries like Nigeria. Maybe you could do a fundraiser to help get these amazing tools into their hands?

Just wondering about using the respirator, when I took a safety course for working in the oilfield, they required us to limit our facial hair in order to get a seal around the nose and mouth. Also firefighters have the samee restrictions when it comes to respirators. Just my 2 pence worth for your consideration.

Just wanted to denote that chemical reactions along a temperature gradient always follow a bell curve and when you say the production of volatile compounds is at a certain temperature that normally means that there are some of these compounds are already being produced at temperatures below this mark. So, if you constantly work with those materials I'd not risk it and wear a mask more often than not.

What if you are using a heat gun? The numbers are 1-7 which doesn’t specify what the temperature is. Also are there any other ways to melt larger volumes of plastic at the specified temperature. Or a specific machine that melts at this temp. I’m mostly using milk bottles or other #2 plastics like grocery bags majority are marked so easier to use. For instance Walmart, dollar general, pic n save, I’ve melted over 250 of those so far. Also I’m having trouble finding a suitable mold. I’ve been using silicone egg makers and pressing the plastic after it has melted. Keeping it pressed until it cools. I’m planning on switching to aluminum molds. I’m still refining my technique. I have access to more tools a whole workshop but I’m not sure which ones would be most effective for melting/molding.

Remember that you can cut tin cans and use them to like cookie cutters to shape thin sheets of soft plastic. Also, you can use cloth, like denim, to make "containers" with pockets for inserting flat plastic to stiffen up the container.

I would like to point out that Plastic is a waste byproduct of petroleum refinement. It used to be dumped not unlike Gasoline was before the Gasoline engine was made. Most manufacturers use Virgin Plastic more due to mechanical properties and reliability. Plastic degrades the more it is remelted. (The Volatile Organic Compounds have to come from somewhere.) It also doesn't help that some types, such as ABS and PS, tend to have additives that make recycling them wildly inconsistent.

Good video. For me, I'd say that it's safe to recycle most plastics, provided all safety precautions are considered, including: - Cellulose acetates/propionates/butyrates - PE/PP - PLA (basically made from lactic acid, which is inside of you all the time) - TPS (basically modified sugar) - PET - PMMA - PS/HIPS/ABS (Styrenic polymers should be recycled outside or in a hood/with an extractor) - Polycarbonates (Again, outside or hood/extractor) - PA I wouldn't touch PVC with a barge pole. It's pretty much an obsolete polymer in today's age. And even though there are PVC 3d printing filament, I don't think the carcinogenicity of Vinyl Chloride is worth it.

PET can be a little sketchy to work with, as it absorbs moisture very easily and can cause essentially an explosion if put under heat and pressure. And ABS is pretty nasty stuff that we don't plan on working with, We tried PS recently, which worked well but needed extra ventilation to remove the fumes.

@@BrothersMake have you heard about ASA? It doesn't use polybutadiene as part of the blend, instead uses a few different acrylic monomers. Butadiene is probably the most toxic VOC from ABS. Something that's possible to do (and people, who know their chemistry, have done) is exploited Polystyrene's tendancy to crack into monomeric styrene as a means of recycling the polymer, where the recovered styrene can undergo something called radical polymerisation, which is also used to make virgin PS. This makes it one of the most indefinitely recyclable polymers to exist. Granted, styrene really isn't good for you. But with proper safety precautions (like a hood/outside/with a respirator), it can be done safely. Although, that does mean it's a bit more involved than what you do here! Still, keep up the good work!

Lovely Videos as always :D I have a question :) Can I just melt a small pile of plastic on a silicon sheet with a heatgun? I dont want to use a panini press but for my purpose, melting it in a can is not optimal. My plan would be to melt it directly on the silicone sheet and than form it, is that going to create a problem? Looking forward to an answer :)

I once tried using a sandwich/waffle maker but it didnt work. Maybe the temperature wasnt hot enough or the surface didnt heat the plastic well. Probably the heat gun will work better. Thanks bros!!!

I have mastered the technology in the manufacture of a product from PE HD 2, to place not an interesting transparent plastic in the body of the product, but to make the shell of the product from beautiful different colors. And you certainly understand what this means: I can make more products with a beautiful color in this way. Moreover, this is not a complex complex process, but performed simultaneously. It doesn't take a second longer than pressing one color plastic. How can I put on a product a beautiful "stocking" made of plastic of a different color? IT'S A SECRET!!! Look at my last Shorts there in Russian but there is a demonstration of a product made of two types of plastic, and you can see the result.

#GLUE i watched some of your vids and there is a way to stick glue to this plastic it s a pre-glue that you paint on before using super glue and i know it works bc i used to fix glasses and no glue will stick to sunglass plastic use this pre-glue and the break becomes the last place it will break in the future just letting you know

Because there will be traces of chlorine in the bottle that will not wash out. If you heat the chlorine it will evaporate into the air much quicker than the normal rate and you can poison yourself. If you burn it, especially in combination with other materials like plastic, you will change its chemical composition and if combined you won't even know what substance you are inhaling. You can safely use plastic from food containers, human and pet grade soaps and inert product packaging. Please don't use plastic from any chemical cleaners, or chemical construction products.

Those are meant to protect you from chemical and bio weapons. It is best to use filters that are designed for the specific use/chemicals you will be working with.

Couldn't give a monkeys about carbon footprint, a complete nonsense. Generate as much CO2 as you like, it won't make the slightest difference to anything. Plastics, yes excellent video. I do a lot of 3D printing in ABS in particular and although I do not use a respirator, I do take several precautions.

@@BrothersMake Oh that’s right it's us causing global warming, those rising sea levels we have all noticed, those hotter summers. Nothing to do with the oceans being the biggest source of CO2 by far, or volcanic action that dwarfs mankinds output, or the fact that CO2 is not a very effective greenhouse gas, or that CO2 is only 0.04% in the atmosphere anyway and is essential to life. Not normal variations caused by all sorts of variations in some other source (The SUN) - no of course not. Not a stab at you video on plastics, quite right, I'm all for recycling, proper disposal, environmentally friendly, but when things aren't true they aren't true, no matter how many people chose to believe it.

If companies stop using plastic then you guys would definitely be out of business and probably not have a successful RU-vid channel so in a way you should be thankful for companies using plastic

Such backwards thinking. There’s plenty of plastic in the world for us to recycle thousands of times over without ever running out. So no, we won’t be thanking producers of virgin plastic.
